JHS digs deep to beat East Jackson
By Ben Munro
WHAT Jefferson lacked
in style points Tuesday
night, it made up for with
sheer determination.
Overcoming one of their
worst shooting nights of
the year, the Lady Dragons
outlasted East Jackson
29-26 at home in a defen
sive struggle.
“The one thing you can
never underestimate is the
heart of a team,” coach
Jason Gibson said. “This
team has come a long way.
There was probably a time
this year where we might
not have won that game ...
Good teams find a way to
win basketball games like
that.”
Kellie Goza led the Lady
Dragons offensively with
nine points.
Jefferson can lock up at
least a tie for the no. 3 seed
in the subregion if it can
beat rival Jackson County
Friday night at home.
The Lady Dragons will
have to go the rest of the
way without their main
post player Bailey Boyd
who was lost for the sea
son with an ACL injury.
Gibson saidhisteammust
play like it’s a “wounded
animal.” “That’s got to be
the mindset of this team
... We’ve still got a lot of
season left,” he said.
As for Tuesday’s vic
tory over East Jackson
it came three days after
having beaten the Lady
Eagles 49-39 on the road.
Turning around and hav
ing to play East Jackson
again presented problems
for Jefferson.
“Anytime you play a
team back-to-back, you
can expect kind of a back
yard brawl,” Gibson said.
“It’s tough when you play
your rival back-to-back. To
East Jackson’s credit, they
got in a zone (defense) and

we did not shoot the ball
well tonight.”
Jefferson, which is aver
aging about six three-point
ers a game, didn’t hit a trey
until the final minute, but it
was a big one.
Skylar Evanson drained
a three with 40 seconds left
to give the Lady Dragons a
27-26 lead.
Then two free throws by
Sarah Wood - she banked
the first in, while the second
drew the back iron and fell
in - gave Jefferson a three-
point lead. “Sarah has come
such a long way this year”
Gibson said. “I’m extreme
ly proud of her ... She is
probably one of our most
improved players this year.”
Jefferson led the low-
scoring affair 12-10 at the
half and 18-15 after three
quarters, but then went four
and half minutes without
scoring to start the final
period.
Jefferson eventually
trailed 26-22 with less than
a minute left before Kellie
Goza hit two free throws
with 50 seconds left to pull
the Lady Dragons within
two.
Then Evanson buried her
huge three-pointer 10 sec
onds later.
While a very sub-par
night offensively, the Lady
Dragons’ defensive effort
was all Gibson could ask
for.
“Any time you hold a
team to 26 points, you feel
like you ought to win,”
Gibson said.
Jefferson had an easier
time with East Jackson in
the first meeting.
The Lady Dragons hit
four three-pointers in the
first quarter in that game
as Jefferson ran out to a
15-2 lead and eventually
led 22-12 at the half and
37-22 after three quarters.
“We shot the ball
extremely well from the
perimeter” Gibson said.
Jefferson then led by as
much as 17 in the fourth
quarter before Gibson
inserted his freshmen subs.
The coach was particular
ly pleased with his defense,
which surrendered just 12
first-half points.
“I thought our defense
was outstanding ... I felt
like we did a good job lim
iting their shots,” Gibson
said.
Bethany Whitlock led
the Lady Dragons with 11
points and Evanson added
10.
Before the two-game
series with East Jackson,
Jefferson experienced
another tough loss to Elbert
County, falling 48-41 to the
Lady Blue Devils Friday
on the road. Evanson fin
ished with 10 points.
Gibson said his team
allowed Elbert County too
many mn-outs and easy
baskets, noting that the
Lady Blue Devils scored
12 uncontested points.
“We didn’t even have a
chance to play defense,”
Gibson said. “Things
against a team like Elbert
County will kill you.”

GAME-WINNER
bounded the ball and set
up for one final play. But
Andre Daniel got a hand
on the ball and Thompson
came up with it with seven
seconds left.
Thompson then pushed
the ball down the floor but
ran into a triple team in the
left comer.
With no one to pass
to, Thompson put up his
22-foot desperation heave.
“I just threw it up once
it got down to about two
seconds,” he said.
Ball game. Then chaos.
Thompson’s teammates
and some fans dog-piled on
top of him on the Jefferson
gym floor while East
Jackson had to watch a val
iant rally from a 13-point
deficit go by the wayside.
Jefferson coach Bolling
DuBose was very pleased
with parts of the game - the
very end obviously - and
not so much others.
“I was proud of the kids,”
DuBose said. “There are
certainly things we can
work on. We didn’t play
our best game, but we did
get the win.”
Defensively, Jefferson
did little to stop East
Jackson from attacking the
basket, DuBose said, nor
did his team play well on
the defensive boards.
But the coach felt his
team shot the ball well,
especially in the third
quarter when it scored 28
points in the period and led
62-51.
Then East Jackson ral
lied, setting up the drama.
“You’ve got to give them
credit,” DuBose said. “I
thought they made a great
comeback.”
This was the second time
in four days East Jackson
found itself digesting a
heartbreaking defeat by the
Dragons.

with less than a minute
left. But Jefferson, thanks
to two bank-in three-
pointers from David
Watson, forced overtime
and won 69-61.
The Dragons - who
locked up a no. 3 seed
in the region tournament
— are on a roll now at
the right time as win
ners of seven of their last
nine games heading into
the regular season finale
against Jackson County.
Jefferson is also play
ing with confidence, hav
ing stared down defeat in
consecutive games, only
to somehow win.
“It really helps us,”
Thompson said. “I think
it’s going to help us as
we get into the region
(tournament) and into
the state (tournament).
With the close games
we’ve been playing, I
think we’re going to be
ready.”
Moving forward,
Jefferson also wants
to settle a score with
Jackson County Friday.
The Panthers defeated
the Dragons 56-54 on
Dec. 17. The Dragons
haven’t forgotten.
“We’re ready for them,”
Thompson said.

the hero of Jefferson’s
Tuesday win over East
Jackson, Watson authored
the Dragons’ come
back Saturday with his
late three-pointers and a
19-point night.
Thompson added 12
points and Hoytes Damons
chipped in 11.
The Dragons were able
to weather a huge night
from Cody Gibbs, who
scored 30 points.
Jefferson trailed 23-22 at
the half and 42-39 at the
end of three quarters and
appeared to be heading
toward loss after the clock
dipped inside a minute.
‘ And then we make a lay
up and then David banks in
two threes,” DuBose said.
The Dragons came into
that first game with East
Jackson a little leg-weary
after beating Elbert County
73-63 in Elberton.
Jefferson outscored
the Blue Devils 28-13 in
the fourth quarter to earn
its second win this sea
son over Elbert County.
Jefferson went ll-for-14
from the free throw line in
the fourth quarter.
Watson paced the
Dragons with 25 points.
Thompson added 19.
