JCCHS gets grant for post-secondary program
THE GEORGIA
Appalachian Center for
Higher Education (GACHE)
recently awarded a $6,500
grant to Jackson County
Comprehensive High School
to support efforts aimed at
having students continue their
education after school.
The awards were presented
at the Chattahoochee Technical
College's Appalachian cam
pus in Jasper on Sept. 20. The
event featured a panel with
a number of state and local
education officials discuss
ing “Moving the finish line
from high school graduation
to post-secondary and career
success.”
The 27 schools receiv
ing grants will implement
GACHE's model strategies to
assist and encourage students
to continue their education
beyond high school by enroll
ing in and completing a post
secondary program.
“We are excited that so
many superintendents, school
principals, faculties and staff
were willing to step up to
the challenge of ensuring that
their students are ready for
college with real post-second-
ary choices after high school
graduation,” said GACHE
director Shirley Davis in a
statement. “The economic
consequences for failure to
continue education after high
school are severe. Eighty per
cent of the jobs available to
the students who graduate in
2012 will require at least two
years of post-secondary edu
cation. We want every student
to have college as a viable
option.”
GACHE is a federally
funded program through
the Appalachian Regional
Commission with North
Georgia College & State
University serving as fiscal
agent.
It serves schools in 13
Appalachian counties in
Georgia. Cooperative partner
ships have been formed with
Northeast Georgia Regional
Educational Service Agency
(RES A), North Georgia
RESA, Northwest Georgia
RESA and Pioneer RESA.
GACHE has an on-going
partnership with the National
Student Clearinghouse (NSC)
for collecting, analyzing and
providing post-secondary
enrollment information for
GACHE schools to improve
post-secondary enrollment for
their students.
