AFJROTC CELEBRATES AIR FORCE’S BIRTHDAY
The cadets of the GA-20065 Dragon Group at Jefferson High School’s Junior ROTC program celebrated the U.S.
Air Force’s birthday on September 18. In keeping with tradition, the youngest member of the unit, Cadet LaKaya
Billups (R), and oldest member, Cadet Jesselyn Armstrong (L) cut the cake. President Harry S. Truman cre
ated the Air Force with the signing of the National Security Act of 1947 on July 26, 1947. The Air Force became
operational on September 18, 1947, when Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson administered the oath of office to the
first secretary of the Air Force, Stuart Symington. Before this act, the Air Force came under the U.S. Army as the
Army Air Corps.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Third grade students at North Jackson Elementary School recently designed proj
ects to show the different communities to which they belong. The communities
ranged from large communities — such as the Earth — to small communities, such
as the classroom. Shown (L-R) are: Emina Kalac, Addy Hollis and Allianne Clark.
