Dragons pass first-round test at area
By Ben Munro
GOOD enough.
The no. 1 seed Jefferson volleyball team
got by a mid-level team from the other
side of the area—Prince Avenue — in the
first round of the Area 8-AA/A tournament
Tuesday as the Dragons (29-7) pursue their
quest for a state tournament berth.
The Dragons, coming off an undefeated
season in sub-area play, beat the Wolverines
25-16, 25-18 and will move on to play
George Walton Thursday
at 6 p.m. at East Hall.
“Survive and move on
—that’s the key ” Jefferson
coach Mike Paul said.
Jefferson had to come
from behind to win both
games. But the Dragons
rallied behind solid serving from
Eden Starnes and Cassie Metcalf
and high percentage hitting from
Starnes, Sarah Wood and Savanna
Holland.
“We didn’t pass the ball well in
either game,” Paul said. “But we
were serving well and we got a lot
of points off serving.”
Leaders for the night were Metcalf (five
aces), Taylor Cramsey (one kill), Amanda
Daniel (two aces, 13 assists), Starnes (three
aces, she kills on 11 attempts), Wood (one
ace, four kills on four attempts) and Holand
(she kills on nine att3mpts, three blocks).
Prior to the region tournament opener,
Jefferson picked up two wins on the final
day of the regular season, beating rival
Jackson County (25-8, 25-21) and Athens
Christian (25-11,25-12).
Jefferson’s 6-0 record in 8-AA South
marks its third consecutive undefeated sea
son in sub-area play. This was also senior
night for the Dragons as Jefferson honored
a group of 12th graders that have won over
100 matches in their careers.
‘This group of seniors have left their
mark on the Jefferson Volleyball program,”
Paul said. “They hold nearly every record
that we keep track of.”
Leaders for the night were Metcalf (four
aces, she kills), Amanda Daniel (she aces,
five kills, 20 assists) Cramsey (one ace,
nine kills), Starnes (three aces, eight kills),
Wood (one ace, two kills), Holland (five
aces, she kills) and Amanda Burgamy (four
aces).
Coming Up
•Jefferson vs.
George Walton,
Thurs. 6 p.m.
at East Hall
who hit a 26-yard field
goal for East Jackson in
the second quarter, and
Trent Dowdy, who broke
a 62-yard touchdown run
with 25 seconds left in the
game.
Smith said East Jackson
had been using Dowdy,
who plays mostly as a
defensive back, as a run
ning back in practice.
Dowdy has showcased his
running ability on some
long interception returns
this year which prompt
ed the Eagle coaches to
experiment using him in
the backfield.
“It’s a knack that he has
when the ball is in his
hands,” Smith said. “He
figures out a way to get a
lot of yards.”
Smith said Dowdy could
see more time with the
ball in his hands.

“He’s done a good job
and he’ll probably get a
little more playing time
next week at it,” Smith
said.
The biggest offen
sive night, however,
belonged to standout
tailback C.J. Allen who
topped the century mark
again with 144 yards on
18 carries. He picked up
a 40-yard gain on the
first play from scrim
mage.
With no game this
Friday, East Jackson
will now use this week’s
down to give the junior
varsity more reps. In
fact, the JV will prac
tice with the varsity this
week “just to kind of
give us a look at some
kids,” Smith said.
Smith said there will
be less team empha
sis and more individ
ual work since East
Jackson is off Friday.
The Eagles’ off-date
also coincides with its
fall break, which starts
Thursday.
“Just lined up with
the school calendar, it’s
phenomenal,” Smith
said. “We couldn’t ask
for any better. We kind
of need a fresh start
after the last couple of
weeks.”
Advancing continued from page IB
(against Union County).
We had she or seven errors
in that game. And that
was just not us. So, our
whole main focus was
to go in and be focused
and have a plan for every
single thing. They really
rallied behind each other.”
Jackson County moves
on to face the loser of
Fannin County and
Union County Thursday
in Fannin County.
The Panthers must
win two more games
in the losers’ bracket
to qualify for state.
“We have to win from
here on out — no room
for error ... but the girls
believe in themselves and
believe in each other, so
I think we’ll be able to
carry it out and be suc
cessful,” Laird said.
Down 2-0 after the
top of the first Tuesday
against East Hall, Jackson
County responded with
eight unanswered runs
over the course of the
first four innings to take
a commanding lead. The
Panthers then tacked
on three more scores
in the sixth inning to
end the game early.
Ironically, Jackson
County had beat East Hall
Monday in extra-innings
in walk-off fashion with
a game-winning hit
from Peyton Sorrells.
Tuesday’s win was a
much different kind of
walk-off victory. When
Kortnee Satterfield ripped
a three-run double in
Tuesday’s win to clear
the bases, it brought the
mercy rule into effect.
“She did a great job
of bringing them in ... I
was glad that it was her
who did that,” Laird said.
Haley Shinall pitched
six innings for the vic
tory. Offensively, Jessica
Baker, Kelsey Turner,
Mason Garland, Shinall
and Satterfield all drove
home scores in the rout.
Laird said playing
immediately after the 5-0
loss to Union County
helped the team move on.
“We couldn’t sit there
and dwell on what had
just happened because
I felt if we did that, it
would be harder to pick
back up,” Laird said.
There was much
more drama in Jackson
County’s Monday
game with East Hall.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom
of the ninth, Sorrells — a
freshman making one
of her first varsity plate
appearances of the season
— drove home Ashleigh
Lance to give Jackson
County a 3-2 win.
“Peyton did an amaz
ing job,” Laird said. “We
pulled her and Cassie
Satterfield both up from
JV just because of their
performance on the JV
and we just wanted to get
them some experience
and exposure to the high
school atmosphere.”
And there was no
greater experience than
this when Laird called
upon Sorrells to pinch-
hit in the ninth inning
for Macey Latty.
“Macey has been doing
a great job for us slapping
and bunting,” Laird said.
“The only thing was, we
didn’t want to bring the
infield in, so we needed
someone who could kind
of put it out there for us
and she did a great job.”
Madison Whitmire
had tied the game at
two in the eighth inning
when she tripled to right
field to score Alyssa
Dasher. Whitmire, how
ever, was thrown out
trying to take home.
Following a strong start
from Shinall, Satterfield
threw the final 1 1/3
innings to earn the win.
HERE IT COMES
