HEMPHILL COMPLETES TRAINING
Ricky Hemphill (R) graduated from the GPSTC-Regional
Police Academy in Athens after completing the 10-week,
408-hour basic law enforcement training course as
required by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and
Training Council. The course provides instruction in
the areas of criminal justice, criminal law, constitutional
law, community relations, modern police procedures,
firearms, emergency vehicle operations, and first aid
training. Hemphill is employed with the Jackson
County Sheriff’s Office. He is shown with Sheriff Stan
Evans.

Jefferson police investigate ten accidents

Superior Court proceedings in
Jackson County include the fol
lowing:
•Samuel Battle, interference
with government property, $250
fine, restitution and two years
probation.
•Samuel Demetrius Battle,
burglary and possession of a
firearm by a convicted felon,
five years in jail to be suspend
ed upon completion of mental
health program, $1,500 fine, 10
years probation and restitution.
•Julie Lynn Sanders, theft by
taking, $1,000 fine, 38 days in
jail, eight years probation and
restitution.
•Richard Gonzales, financial
transaction fraud, three years
probation, 30 days in jail, resti
tution and $1,000 fine.
•Charles Tolbert, possession
of methamphetamine, two years
in jail, eight years probation,
$1,000 fine and waive fourth
amendment rights.
•Mary Elizabeth Martin,
tampering with evidence and
obstruction of an officer, 12
months probation and $500 fine.
A charge of cruelty to children
was dismissed.
•James Henry Riffe, possession
of methamphetamine, five and a
half years in jail and nine and a
half years probation. Charges of
possession of a firearm during
the commission of a crime, pos
session of a drug-related object,
possession of marijuana, stop
sign violation, obstruction of an
officer, operating a vehicle with
a cracked windshield, expired
tag and improper exhaust equip
ment were dismissed.
•Christopher Clay, family vio
lence battery and cruelty to chil
dren, 12 months probation and six
months in jail. A charge of aggra
vated battery was dismissed.
•Richard Lewis Looney, rob
bery, seven years in jail, 13 years
probation and restitution.
•David Allen Puckett, vehicu
lar homicide, seven years proba
tion, $1,000 fine and drug and
alcohol evaluation and treat
ment.
•Joe Marshall Shannon, pos
session of cocaine, four years
probation and $1,000 fine.
•Lonnie Dewayne Cagle, reck
less conduct, 12 months proba
tion and $1,000 fine.
•Angelia Lea Long, drugs not
kept in original container and
failure to signal for lane change,
12 months probation and $500
fine.
•Christopher Terry Lewis,
alteration of a license plate, $250
fine and 12 months probation. A
charge of possession of metha
done was dismissed.
•Christopher Carthern, pos
session of alprazolam, $1,000
fine and four years probation.
Charges of pedestrian under the
influence and drugs not in origi
nal container were dismissed.
•Dextavious McCurry, terror
istic threats and acts, $1,000 fine
and five years probation.
•Steven Lamont Vernon, aggra
vated assault, terroristic threats
and acts and simple assault, 10
years probation and $2,000 fine.
Charges of possession of a fire
arm during the commission of
a crime and pointing a gun at
another person were dismissed.
•Regi Z. Cherian, criminal
damage to property and DUI,
$800 fine, 12 months probation,
24 hours in jail and 40 hours
community service.
•Rodney Ray Norris, driv
ing under the influence (DUI),
$1,000 fine, 90 days in jail and
five years probation.
•Rome Jefferson Manus, first
degree forgery, two years in jail,
eight years probation, $500 fine
and restitution.
•Joshua Rogers, first degree
forgery, two years probation,
$500 fine and restitution.
•Charles Nieman, theft by
receiving stolen property, $1,000
fine and four years probation.
•Daniel Patrick Hall, posses
sion of methamphetamine, three
years in jail, seven years proba
tion and waive fourth amendment
rights. Charges of possession of
marijuana, suspended license and
open container were dismissed.
•Melvin Todd Minish, first
degree forgery, six years proba
tion, $1,000 fine and restitution.
•Tommy Phillips, possession
of methamphetamine and simple
battery, five years probation,
$500 fine and 82 days in jail.
•Brian Rainwater, posses
sion of methamphetamine, three
years in jail, 12 years probation
and $2,000 fine. Charges of pos
session of drug-related objects
and possession of methamphet
amine with intent to distribute
were dismissed.
•James Roach, battery, 60 days
in jail, five years probation and
$250 fine. Charges of cruelty to
children were dismissed.
•Steve Canup, failure to regis
ter as a sex offender and shoplift
ing, 12 months in jail.
DISMISSED
The following was dismissed:
•Steven Carl Johnson, posses
sion of a firearm by a convicted
felon.
JURY VERDICT
In other court news, a jury
found Jonathan McCollum not
guilty on charges of aggravat
ed child molestation and child
molestation.

Police Department inves
tigated 10 accidents last
week, including the fol
lowing:
•two-vehicle accident
in the parking lot at On
The Run, Highway 11,
Jefferson. The driver of a
2008 Ford F-150 backed
into the driver of a 1995
Ford Crown Victoria while
at the stop sign in the park
ing lot at On The Run.
•one-vehicle accident
on Interstate 85 north at
Exit 137. The driver of
a 2004 Mitsubishi station
wagon reported she struck
a deer with the front driv
er’s side of her vehicle as
she was traveling north on
Interstate 85.
•two-vehicle accident on
Interstate 85 north bound at
mile marker 137. The driv
er of a 2005 Honda Accord
and the driver of a 2010
Chevrolet Tahoe were both
traveling north on Interstate
85 when the driver of the

in Braselton was completed
destroyed by fire on Sunday,
Sept. 18, according to offi
cials.
When firefighters arrived at
the house, located near the

Take Back Day on Saturday,

available to accept any phar
maceutical — prescription
or over-the-counter — drugs
in the Braselton Community
Room of the Braselton Police
andMunicipal Court Building,
located in the rear of the build
ing at 5040 Highway 53.
The service is free and
anonymous with no questions

The driver of a 2001 Ford
F-150 reported he was trav
eling north on Highway
129 toward Interstate 85
and was looking at his GPS
on his phone to see where
he needed to go. The
F-150 driver stated when
he looked up the car in
front of him, the driver of
a 2000 Ford Explorer, was
stopped for the red light at
Hog Mountain Road and
he was unable to stop and
rear-ended the Explorer.
•two-vehicle accident on
Highway 11 at the Damon
Gause Bypass. The driver
of a 2003 Jeep Wrangler
reported he was rear-ended
by the driver of a 2003
Chevrolet Tahoe. The driv
er of the Wrangler stated
he was stopped for the
yield sign, saw an open
ing to Jackson County public

The structure was a total
loss and neighbors had placed
an emergency call about the
fire.

collected, the drugs will then
be turned over to the DEA
and destroyed.
