Relay for Life organizers working on ‘12 event
Hoschton council gets report on fall festival
Inaugural event
held in May far
surpassed goal
BY KERRI TESTEMENT
IT WASN’T too long ago that
the Braselton-Hoschton area
held its inaugural Relay for Life,
which benefits the American
Cancer Society.
And with plans already mov
ing forward for the 2012 event,
the 2011 local Relay was just
honored as the “Best Rookie”
Relay among eight states.
Organizers of the Braselton-
Hoschton Relay for Life aimed
to raise $25,000 for the inaugu
ral event in May — instead, they
got $80,000.
“Most new Relays don’t
go that far over the goal,” said
Victoria Patrick, senior commu
nity manager for the American
Cancer Society.
That’s a “huge accomplish
ment,” given the poor economy,
she added.
“They saw a reason to come
together,” Patrick said of the
community’s support for Relay
for Life.
Hoschton Mayor Erma
Denney and Patrick traveled to
Greensboro, N.C., on Friday to
pick up an award honoring the
joint Relay between the neigh
boring cities.
Already, the 2012 Braselton-
Hoschton Relay for Life is set
for May 4 and will be held
again at the Hoschton Park,
next to West Jackson Primary
School. This year’s theme is
“Stay Tuned for a Cure,” play
ing on the premise of television
shows.
Last year, the local Relay wel
comed 16 teams; this year, orga
nizers hope to get 24 teams.
To get more teams involved in
the event, organizers will talk to
more local churches, businesses
and civic groups, Patrick said.
Compared to last year, the
2012 Braselton-Hoschton Relay
for Life is starting early. A kick
off event was held last week with
plans to continue team meetings
on the fourth Thursdays of each
month, at 7 p.m., in the lower
level (Braselton Community
Room) of the Braselton Police
and Municipal Court Building.
Meetings won’t be held in
November or December, but
will pick up again in January
2012.
Patrick said new teams will
be welcome until the Relay
starts in May 2012.
The 2012 local Relay chair
persons will be Hoschton Mayor
Denney and Braselton town
manager Jennifer Dees. Bob
Kindelberger, a Braselton resi
dent that survived throat cancer,
will be the honorary chairper
son. He received his treatment
at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center, a presenting sponsor of
the 2011 Braselton-Hoschton
Relay for Life.
By Nov. 1, the local Relay
will also be selling its cook
book — “Hope. Cook. Cure.”
— which will feature 447 reci
pes, Patrick said. Relay teams
for the Braselton-Hoschton
event will be selling the cook
books.

BY KERRI TESTEMENT
Hoschton Mayor Erma
Denney said she believes that
this year’s fall festival was the
best on record for the 37th annu
al event.
The Hoschton Fall Festival
spanned several locations in the
city from Friday through Sunday,
Sept. 23-25. The event included
a parade, fireworks show, two
evening concerts, fundraising
auctions and vendor booths.
“We had a blast,” said coun
cil member Theresa Kenerly,
who coordinated much of the
Hoschton Fall Festival. “I think
everything went good.”
The Hoschton Historic
Commission sold all of its hand-
painted privies, which made
$1,700 for the group, accord
ing to Kenerly. The Hoschton
Women’s Civic Club sold $700
in raffle tickets for homemade
cakes and donated $500 of that
to the city to later install holi
day snowflake lights along Ga.
Hwy. 53.
An inaugural 5K run ben
efiting the Braselton-Hoschton
Relay for Life raised an esti
mated $700-800 with about 70
participants, Denney said. The
Bark for Life, another Relay
fundraiser, will be moved from
the fall festival to the PetFest in
Braselton in 2012.
Denney said the highlight of
the fall festival was an inaugural
reunion among those who grew
up in Braselton and Hoschton.
The event was held at the
Braselton Police and Municipal
Court Building.
Kenerly said she encouraged
organizers of the reunion to
make it an annual event tied to
the Hoschton Fall Festival.
FUNDS DONATED FOR HOLIDAY
DECORATIONS
The Hoschton Women’s Civic Center sold more than
$700 in raffle tickets for homemade cakes with the win
ners announced at the recent fall festival. The group
donated $500 of the funds to the city on Thursday
for Hoschton to later install holiday snowflake lights
along Ga. Hwy. 53. Hoschton’s public works employ
ee, Donnie Bogel, will rent a bucket truck to install
and remove the decorations. One snowflake, which
will be placed at the intersection of Ga. Hwy. 53 and
Peachtree Road, will have multiple colors that Bogel
plans to install just for his three children. The children
travel home from school past the intersection and the
decoration will be named the Bogel Family Snowflake.
Civic club members Joyce Smosmy and Faye Post are
shown presenting a $500 check to Hoschton Mayor
Erma Denney.

volunteered for the Hoschton
Fall Festival, including Kenerly.
