Talmo plans city hall flooring renovation
BY ERIN ROSSITER
TALMO CITY Council
delayed any decision on
flooring improvements inside
the old home that houses city
hall and the library during its
regular October meeting held
last week.
Members said they wanted
to review multiple bids for
the work that will include
pulling old carpet and restor
ing existing pine floors or
installing new solid-surface
flooring inside the AJ Irvin
Road building.
The project is aimed at
helping wheelchair bound
citizens who sometimes have
difficulty navigating the car
pet in some areas of the first
floor, where the library is and
voting occurs, said city clerk
Debra L. Fontaine.
While there is no deadline
for the project, the council
wants the work to be com
pleted by the Nov. 8 election,
if possible. City hall serves
as a Jackson County precinct.
If the project interferes with
the election, the work will be
postponed, Fontaine added.
Mayor Larry Wood urged
Fontaine to collect sepa
rate bids for the upstairs
and downstairs, explain
ing that the council may opt
to improve the downstairs
rooms only, depending on
the cost.
The house was built in
1910. The city installed a
wheelchair ramp outside and
reconfigured a bathroom to
make it more accessible.
Changing the carpet has been
a topic that the council also
has envisioned for some time,
Fontaine said.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business at the
meeting, the council:
•agreed to support the pro
posed FY2012 budget from
the Jackson County Library
Board similar to this year’s
budget. It would designate
about $7,900 to Talmo’s
library.
•voted to send a certified let
ter to the bank possessing the
late Jerry Egnatovich’s home
on Midland Road following
complaints from neighbors
claiming the vacant property
is unkempt and a health haz
ard. The bank will be given
10 days to submit a plan for
the property’s cleanup.
•voted to support Jackson
County’s Certified Literacy
Community Program with
$250, an annual allotment.
•heard the librarian’s
report, which included a
patron count of 310 people,
75 check outs, 196 check ins
and 127 computer uses.
•voted to raise mileage for
city workers conducting city
business to 55 cents from 50
cents.
•authorized Fontaine to
continue researching a free
recycling program called
Better World Books, through
which citizens could depos
it their old books into an
outdoor container. In return,
Better World Books would
give the city money for such
deposits.
