EJCHS FFA COMPETES
Members of the East Jackson Comprehensive High School FFA chapter were one of 38 teams partici
pating in the National FFA Poultry Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE).

Members of the East Jackson
Comprehensive High School FFA
chapter were one of 38 teams partic
ipating in the National FFA Poultry
Evaluation Career Development Event
(CDE). The event was held in con
junction with the 87th National FFA
Convention and Expo in Fouisville,
Ky. The team, led by advisor Greg
Gilman, was awarded a gold emblem.
Members also competed for individu
al awards with 144 other participants.
Ridge Chaisson received a gold
emblem. Faith Gilman received a gold
emblem, Samantha Manley received
a gold emblem and Doug Evans
received a silver emblem.
The top 10 individuals and the
national winning team members
received cash awards to recognize
their success in the event. The cash
awards and the poultry evaluation
event are sponsored by Newly Weds
Foods, Inc., Tyson Foods, Inc. and
U.S. Poultry & Egg Association as a
special project of the National FFA
Foundation.
The National FFA Poultry
Evaluation CDE is a competitive
event that tests the participant’s abil
ity to select top quality poultry and
poultry products needed for success
ful production and marketing. Event
participants must complete a written
exam on poultry management, eval
uate classes of live birds for eggs and
meat production, evaluate quality of
eggs and evaluate and identify parts
and products. Each team competed
at local and state levels for the priv
ilege of representing their state at the
National FFA Convention and Expo.
This event, held at the Kentucky
Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky„
is one of many educational activ
ities at the national convention in
which FFA members apply classroom
knowledge to real-life situations.

PINK OUT GAME HELD
East Jackson Comprehensive High School recent
ly held its fifth annual pink-out football game.
EJCHS hosts pink-out game
East Jackson Comprehensive High School held its fifth
annual pink-out football game on October 10. Over the
course of the month leading up to the game, the students
from HOSA “Future Health Professionals” sold pink-out
shirts and other merchandise to the faculty, staff and stu
dent body.
At the pink-out football game against Hart County, there
were pink ribbons painted on the field, the football players
wore pink socks, the cheerleaders wore pink bows and
their pink-out shirts and the student section was covered
in pink. Information about breast cancer awareness was
shared with all staff, students and fans at the game. HOSA
members also provided refreshments for the teachers and
staff at EJCHS in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness
Month.
The efforts of HOSA students were extremely success
ful, leaders state. Their goal was to remind everyone that
early detection is one of the most important ways to fight
breast cancer.
At the end of the month. $850 was donated to Athens
Diagnostic Mammogram Fund for women who cannot
afford a mammogram. If you know someone in need of a
mammogram that doesn’t have insurance contact Athens
Diagnostic Center at 706-316-3662.
PRE-K STUDENTS LEARN FROM OFFICER

Sullo talked about his role in the community as a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

WJMS basketball
season kicks off
The West Jackson
Middle School Lady
Panthers recently opened
up their basketball season
with a game against Russell
Middle School. Leading
the panthers were Rose
Boyd, with 12 points, and
Savannah Gilstrap, with
six points. Allianne Clark
had 10 steals in the game
and Caroline Davis record
ed five steals. Davis also
led the team in rebounds
with nine. WJMS defeated
Russell 27-to-13.
WJMS also recently
defeated Malcom Bridge
with a score of 22-to-14.
Boyd had 10 points and
Davis had six points. Clark
recorded five steals and six
rebounds. Davis added 10
rebounds in the game.
Allen shows at livestock expo

Exposition (NAILE).
Allen says she is patient

American International
Livestock Exposition
(NAILE) is an annual event
that attracts thousands of
livestock producers from
across America. More than
200,000 visitors attended
the big expo, and nearly
28,000 livestock entries
competed in 10 species
categories. The NAILE is
the largest purebred expo
sition in the world, and
successful competitors
take home over $750,000

The North American
International took place
in Louisville, Ky., during
November 8-21.
