Canup is CTAE
Kayla Canup, an East
Jackson Comprehensive
High School senior, was
recently honored for her
outstanding accomplish
ments during Career,
Technical and Agricul
tural Education Month
by the Jackson County
Board of Education.
Kayla, the daughter of
Gidget Canup. has com
pleted the Healthcare
Sciences pathway in the
CTAE program.
She is a member of
the BETA club and the
National English Honor
Society, and she is a
member and officer of
HOSA, a club for future
members of the health
care professions.
An honor roll student
who is active in the com
munity, she has worked
on the monthly food bank
at Jefferson First Baptist
Church and with young
sters in daycare, and she
is a blood drive volunteer
and donor.
In her application for
CTAE Month honors.
Kayla described the expe
rience she gained through
clinical rotations at
Northridge Medical Cen
ter as particularly helpful
in setting her on a career
path.
“I was able to job shad
ow and even help some
of the nurses on staff,”
Kayla wrote, “This class
was hands-on and benefi
cial in knowledge, which
is what I longed for the
most. The class prepared

the real world.”
Kayla said the class
“wasn’t just worksheets
and tests.”
“We are taught respon
sibility. we are taught how
to be dependable, and we
were also taught sympa
thy, and the correct way
to act towards patients
and their families.”
Kayla has been a part
of the JCSS work-based
learning program for the
last two years, and she
has been accepted at all
three colleges to which
she applied.
She plans to study nurs
ing at Piedmont College.

MARTIN EARNS FIRST PLACE
Jefferson Middle School student Grade Martin
won first place in the Northeast Georgia region
al Georgia Young Authors competition. She
was one of 16 eighth graders picked statewide
for the honor. With her are Kristi Holloway,
NEGA RESA representative, Gracie and teacher
Jennifer Bray.
Commerce schools
meeting planned
for parents, community
The Commerce City School System will hold a meet
ing May 25 about the comprehensive needs assessment
and the Commerce City School System Consolidated
Local Implementation Plan.
The meeting is open to parents of Commerce City
School students and community members. It will be at
6 p.m. in the auditorium of Commerce High School,
272 Lakeview Dr., Commerce,
A variety of federal documents and school programs
will be discussed and reviewed.
Among them are school-parent involvement policy,
results of parent survey, testing security, CCRPI reports
and complaints procedures.

versity of Mount Union’s
10th annual Student
Celebration Honoring
Our Latest Academic
Research Day.
SCHOLAR Day is
a campus-wide event
fdled with presentations
showcasing academic
excellence and scholarly
research conducted by
Mount Union students.
Three formal presen
tation sessions and two
poster sessions were
included this year, high
lighting 39 formal presen
tations and 22 posters.
Presentations repre
sented 33 departments
and programs, including
Mount Union’s Master
of Arts in educational
leadership and physician
assistant studies graduate
programs.
This event gives stu
dents a chance to share
their latest academic
research with faculty,
staff, students, family,
friends and the surround
ing communities.
PRE-K VISITS JAEMOR
Candace Brooks’ and Mary Ludeman’s pre-K class from North Jackson Elementary School enjoyed
picking strawberries, a wagon ride through the farm, learning about honey bees, planting beans,
tasting dried apples and cider. They ended the trip by playing on the playground.

nursing award

dent, was recently award
ed the Evangeline Lane
Founders Award from the
Byrdine F. Lewis School
of Nursing and Health
Professions.
It is given for graduat
ing with a 3.5 or higher
overall grade point aver
age and at least a 3.67
grade point average in
nursing classes.
The award is named for
the first chair in the Byr
dine F. Lewis School of
Nursing and Health Pro
fessions at Georgia State.

Airman 1st Class
Austin K. Denton
graduated from
basic military train
ing at Joint Base San
Antonio-Lackland,
San Antonio, Texas.
The airman complet
ed an eight-week pro
gram of work.

contest in 2016.

Tonge was an active

“This contest has and
will further commemorate
his love and support of the
chapter.
“Mr. Tonge will be
greatly missed, but his
legacy will always be
remembered,” leaders of
the group said.
Suzy Perry represented
the family and presented
the awards to the winners
in the competition.
