‘Church grandchildren’
are two special graduates
Chris and I called them
our “church grandchil
dren,” from just about the
time we met them.
We became friends
with Bobby and Casey
Vanderburg,
Cade’s parents
and Alyssa and
Audrey’s aunt
and uncle, after
going to church
with them for a
while.
It was not
long until we
started asking in
a joking manner,
“Can the kids
come home with us for
the afternoon?”
That first day I was
sure they did not get hurt
or too dirty running and
playing on our yard toys.
It must have went well,
because it became an
ongoing outing for us.
The kids probably
could not have come as
much as they did. but
there is just something
about having the children
and the church grandpar
ents practically begging.
Once we all got used to
the routine, it was on.
I think we would try
to plan new and different
activities because we did
not want a trio of bored
children on our hands. I
mean we had to be the
cool grandparents!
We would start the
afternoon with lunch at
one of their favorite eat
eries.
It took me a few tries
to help them understand a
sit down restaurant was a
necessity.
Of course, when you
can start the meal with
strawberry shortcake or
an ice cream sundae, it
did not take long for all
of us to have the same
taste in food. Thanks Papa
Chris!
We probably all have a
thousand memories of our
times together.
We would spend time
riding the four-wheel
er. and we believe every
child should have its
share of dirt road driving
experiences.
We all like to fish as
well, and we will never
forget the day Audrey
caught a humongous cat
fish.
She was most proud
of it, so we took it to
her house curled up and
splashing around in a
five-gallon bucket.
Then there were a few
spend the night parties.
What could we do with
five kids on a Saturday
night?
At times, we included
their cousins. Ravyn and
Riley. We had already had
a bonfire and shot fire
works in weeks past.
Leave it to Chris. We
took them
to the goat
sale. I am not
sure why it is
the goat sale
because they
auction off
hundreds of
items.
Well that
night it was
the bunny sale.
Yes. before I
knew it Chris and the kids
were bidding on rabbits.
What is the world? We
were not prepared for rab
bits, and I know their par
ents were not either.
I am sure that night will
go down in history for
many folks.
We left with bunnies.
We were carrying the
bunnies in my car and
no, we did not have any
cages. Never fear.
We made it home and
Chris headed to his shop.
He spent most of the night
crafting cages for their
new pets. Done deal?
Well, we still had to
break the news to their
parents. I guess they had
learned to take us in stride
or at least they were gra
cious enough to let the
kids keep the bunnies.
Oh how time gets away
from us.
These memories seem
like yesterday, but two of
these precious teenagers
will actually graduate Fri
day.
Cade and Alyssa will
both take the stage, get a
high school diploma, and
chart a journey of their
own.
I thank God that we had
an opportunity to play a
small part in their lives.
I sure have learned
a lesson in all of this.
While we set out to be
a small blessing in their
lives, God turned it into
so much more.
The real blessing is
watching these kids grow
and prosper in the Lord.
Congratulations to my
church grandchildren
Cade Vanderburg and
Alyssa Lackey.
I know this is another of
the many milestones you
will accomplish in your
lives. May God lead and
guide you every step of
the way.

ville is pastor at New
Beginnings Ministry. She
