Lanier Tech students ready to work, president says
By Ron Bridgeman
“We measure our success by the
number of our students who are
working ” Ray Perren, president of
Lanier Technical College, said last
week.
Perren spoke at the monthly break
fast of the Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce.
“The focus of our instruction is
hands-on instruction,” he said.
“You can sum this mission state
ment up in two words - workforce
development. That's what Lanier
Tech exists for, to train people to go
into jobs.”
He touted the college’s students'
readiness for work. In 2016, he said,
100 percent of its graduates went to
work or continued their education.
Perren also made the case for
Lanier Tech as a college, not a voca
tional school. He said the credits
earned at Lanier Tech will transfer
to any Georgia university system
institution.
The school's accreditation is the
same as the other Georgia colleges.
“The programs we have lead to
jobs that have a living wage,” he
said.
He noted the college teaches the
same English and math courses for
the first two years of college that are
taught at other schools.
Lanier Tech program also have
accreditations from professional
organizations. He specifically men
tioned the dental hygiene program
Perren said Lanier Tech also teach
es its students “how to be college stu
dents.” About 51 percent of students
are the first generation in their family
to attend college. He said 76 percent
of students are part-time.
He promoted the Move on When
Ready program that students can use
to earn an associate’s degree while
still in high school. He said the cost
is paid by the Hope scholarship pro
gram. but it does not count against
a student’s eligibility for the Hope
scholarship in college.
The program has 523 students for
fiscal year 2017.
He said Lanier Tech instructors
are teaching courses now at Jack-
son County Comprehensive High
School. The county also is working
on a college and career academy.
Lanier Tech also has a drone pro
gram that will start in the fall. He
said a wireless engineering technol
ogy program and mechatronics are
being offered.
He also pointed out the college will
open its new campus in Hall County
this fall. It will include an outdoor
course for commercial driving. The
commercial driving course also will
start this summer at the fire safety
training center in Jackson County.
A logistics management program
is in the works for fall 2018.
“Everything we do is high tech
today,” Perren said.
Talks with Perren
Jim Shaw, left, president of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, talks with
Matt Benson, chairman of the chamber board, and Ray Perren, president of Lanier
Technical College, last week after Perren’s talk to the monthly chamber breakfast.
