JCSO arrests
Man makes threats to kill
A Jefferson man was arrested last
week after recklessly shooting a firearm
and making threats.
Joseph Kyle Smith, 22, 462 Elliott
Smith Road, Jefferson, faces charges of
reckless conduct and terroristic threats
and acts.
Officers with the Jackson County
Sheriffs Office were called to an Elliott
Smith Road residence after a witness
saw Smith shooting his rifle at the
ground and in random directions.
He also reportedly sent text messages
to family members saying, “I'm going
to kill, wanna come?" and “I gotta kill
a few people, apparently (his ex-girl-
friend’s father) has to go.”
He was reportedly upset because his
ex-girlfriend wouldn’t let him see their
child. The woman said he sent her a
text message saying, “I'm coming out
for y'all.''
A family member said they were
concerned Smith’s drug use had begun
to affect his mental health.
When officers approached him,
Smith tried to hand them school certif
icates possibly from middle or elemen
tary school.
"Those are my papers from the gov
ernment that say who I am,’’ he said.
He also reportedly said, "I am God”
and “I’m from the moon and I’m a gift.”
Smith told officers he was just shoot
ing squirrel nests and a porch chair for
target practice. But witnesses said he
was shooting downwards at a random
angle. Some of the shots were report
edly aimed towards his house, while
others were towards houses on W.O.
Smith Road.
Officers took Smith’s loaded Moss-
burg rifle and a shotgun into evidence.
He was booked into the Jackson
County Jail.
MAN ARRESTED AFTER
FOUND IN CRAWLSPACE
A Monroe man was arrested after
officers found him in the crawlspace of
his parent’s residence.
Robert Jeffery Scarbrough, 49, 135
Vine Circle, Monroe, faces charges of
criminal trespass.
Scarborough reportedly called
authorities saying he saw flashlights
under the house,
"I see my wife’s hands coming out
from under the house,’’ he reportedly
said.
When officers arrived, Scarbrough
told them he needed to go under the
house to save his wife. Officers checked
under the house and didn’t see any
thing.
Family members on scene told offi
cers Scarbrough was on drugs and hal
lucinating. He’d previously been kicked
out.
While officers were speaking with
his family, Scarbrough was in the
crawlspace of the house, saying a group
of people had his wife at gunpoint. He
broke areas of the house skirting and
ripped half of a phone jack off a wall.
