Memorial service held for fallen law enforcement
By Kyle Funderburk
The Jefferson Church hosted a memorial
service for law enforcement from Jackson
County and surrounding counties last Tues
day night.
Last Monday was Police Officers Memo
rial Day around the country and Jefferson
Mayor Roy Plott recognize the week as
Police Week.
Pastor Nick Dalton gave an Old and New
Testament reading and prayed for the fami
lies of the officers who had died in service.
Pastor Mark Mobley gave a sermon to
the law enforcement officers in attendance
from Genesis about having dreams as chil
dren and fulfilling lifelong dreams. He
talked about how children tell their parents
that they are going to grow up and do
something great and that police officers
are some of the ones who stuck with their
dreams and accomplished them.
Between the sermon and scripture read
ings, Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirth-
man spoke to the audience about the time
and effort that officers in Jefferson and
around the country put in to keep citizens
safe.
After the sermon, Jackson County
Sheriff Janis Mangum, Chief Terry Esco
of Braselton, Chief Robert Larocque and
Franklin County Sheriff Stevie Thomas
lit six candles, one for each of their offi
cers who lost their lives while on duty in
the past year.
