also learned some
science from the
city clerk of Talmo,
Carey Elliott. The
librarian, Jenna
McBurney, read
them a book. At the
end they had pizza
and popsicles and
played in the park.

Commerce High School seniors were recognized at Honors Day for earning all As during the 2016-17
school year. Students with all As are Emily Hill, Kelsea Williams, Anna Caroline Hardy, Kendell Moon,
Ethan Leffew, Ryan McConnell, Madison Rodriguez, Shelby Crane, Brandi Herrin, Katelyn Morris,
Alexia Rucker, Morgan Partin, Owen Brown and Garrett Ash.

Commerce High School students earned a variety of scholarships. Recipients recognized at the CHS
Honors Day were Mary Young, Noah Rising, Hannah Carter, Emily Hill, Anna Caroline Hardy, Kendell
Moon, Madison Rodriguez, Shelby Crane, Alexia Rucker, Garrett Ash, Karli Loggins, Morgan Partin,
Matthew Flint, Sarah Gonzalez and Dalton Flint.
RECOGNIZED FOR ‘EXCELLENCE’
Jeff Grant, iServe Ministries, and Barbara Banks,
Jackson County School System’s central office
staff, were honored with Excellence in Service
awards at the May 8 meeting of the Jackson
County Board of Education. Grant and Banks
were praised for their compassion and kindness
by their nominators, Amy Wright, assistant prin
cipal at Gum Springs Elementary, and Ginger
Weldon, teacher at West Jackson Elementary
School. The system presents the awards each
month.

to be offered at WJ Middle

School will offer two
summer camps for ris
ing third graders through
rising ninth graders. The
camps will be held June
12 through June 16.
Harry Potter camp
will be from 8:30 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. and will be led
by Melinda Wallace.

a magical week of
wand-making, spell cast
ing. Quidditch and other
wizarding fun,” Wallace
states. “We'll sample
some of the tasty treats

enjoyed during his magi
cal education. We’ll learn
about (and create) magi
cal beasts. ”
Jason Benton will lead
the Star Wars Camp from
12: 30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Benton asks: “Just
how powerful a Jedi are
you? Or are you a Sith
Lord? Your knowledge
of Star Wars trivia will
be increased as will your
skills with a light saber.”
The cost is $125 per
camp. Kids can attend
both camps or just one.

Two athletes from every Georgia high school
receive The Vince Dooley Award each year. This
honor is presented to student athletes based on
their character, citizenship and leadership. Ally
Petering and Ronan Veal were the honorees at
East Jackson Comprehensive High School. Ally
plays softball and Ronan participates in football
and soccer. Ally is the daughter of Donald and
Shannon Petering. Ronan is the son of Ron and
Robin Veal. With them is EJCHS softball coach
Donnie Byrom.

SOUTHERN
Carter Sexton of
Hoschton will play
football at Birmingham
Southern College. He is
also the recipient of the
Founders Scholarship.
Sexton will graduate from
Prince Avenue Christian
School this year. Sexton
ended his high school
football career with a 43-7
record and four Region
8A championships. He is
an active member of The
Church of Hoschton.
