South Jackson Elementary School students
Jericho Parten and Casen Duncan design an
alarm using Legos, Makey Makey kit, and a pro
gramming tool called Scratch as a part of their
engineering project. The students identified a
problem in a novel they recently read and then
invented a possible solution.

Harvey to study in Namibia
Braselton resident Angela Harvey, a master’s student
in the Global Field Program offered through Miami
University’s Project Dragonfly, will travel to Namibia
in June to study ongoing research projects such as radio
tracking, cheetah conservation and ecosystem manage
ment.
Since the program began 13 years ago. Project
Dragonfly’s Earth Expeditions graduate courses have
engaged more than 2,000 people in firsthand educa
tional and scientific research at critical conservation
field sites in Africa, Australia, Asia and the Americas.
Dragonfly is in the department of biology at Miami
University, a state university in Oxford, Ohio.

Commerce City School teachers,
instructional paraprofessionals and
administrators recently participated
in the New Art and Science of Teach
ing Workshop at the high school.
Jeff Flygare from Marzano
Research in Colorado presented the
workshop.
The New Art and Science of
Teaching is an instructional frame
work that addresses the components
teachers use to make the most alter
able effect on student achievement.
Marzano Research’s recommended
strategies are grounded in research
literature and tested through experi
mental/control action research stud
ies.
The workshop was one of three
Commerce City Schools will have in
the 2017-2018 school year.

Three elementary schools get Tanger Outlet grants
Tanger Outlets in Com
merce has recognized
three area schools as this
year’s recipients of a Tan-
gerKIDS Grant.
This year’s recipients
include Jefferson Elemen
tary School, Gum Springs
Elementary School, and
Maysville Elementary
School.
The schools requested
and will receive a com
bined total of $2,900 to
complete their projects.
