SPLOST money 19
percent above budget
SPLOST V is nearing its end and collections are about
19 percent above the budget projections, Trey Wood,
finance director for Jackson County, said.
The May SPLOST revenue, for sales made primarily
in April, was $839,070.
For the first four months of 2017, revenue was $2,354
million. That is up $565,896 from the same period in
2016, an increase of 19 percent.
Since SPLOST V started, in July 2011, collections are
$54,726 million.
SPLOST V, special purpose local option sales tax,
will end June 30. It is used for capital projects and debt
service.
Collections for LOST, local option sales tax, in May
were $503,456. The money is for sales primarily in
April.
LOST revenue through four months is $1.9 million.
That is an increase of $163,770 over the same period
from 2016.
Collections are about 1 percent ahead of the budget for
2017. The budget for 2017 is $5.7 million.
LOST collections since January 2013 are $24.58
million.
Nicholson hours
again up for vote

Nicholson City Hall hours will again be up for a vote
after last Thursday's city council work session.
City hall hours are currently 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday
through Friday to the public. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday through Friday, people can call to make an
appointment if they need to get into city hall.
The motion is being made by council member Mike
Barfield.
“I just think we need to serve the people of Nicholson
better,” he said.
Barfield’s motion is to have city hall open on Sat
urdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Two previous motions to
change city hall hours were voted down.
The council will also vote on a contract for planning
services with Jerry Weitz.
John Mark Palmer was also given the City of Nichol
son Scholarship at the council work session. The schol
arship is worth $1,000.
The city council meeting is Monday, June 5 at 7 p.m.
Braselton DDA
seeks two members
Braselton Downtown Development Authority chair
man Clay Eubanks has announced applications are
available to fill two seats on the seven-member DDA.
Established in 2009 by the General Assembly, the
DDA is an independent panel formed for the purpos
es of planning, organizing and financing projects to
revitalize and redevelop Braselton's commercial dis
trict. Bylaws require members to either be a resident
property owner or an owner or manager of a downtown
business.
“The ideal applicant for the DDA board must
attend one board meeting per month plus devote up to
about ten hours per month to organizing and imple
menting projects and activities in downtown,” said
Eubanks. “Additionally, state law requires specific
training for newly appointed DDA members in Geor
gia.”
The Braselton Town Council will make the official
appointments with four-year terms beginning in July.

‘Mill around downtown’
Braselton on Friday
Locals can “mill around downtown” during the
opening day of the Braselton Farmers Market on
Friday.
There will be mill tours, a tractor show, a walking
tour and the farmers’ market will be open on Friday,
June 2, 4-7 p.m.
The event kicks off Braselton’s weekly market
which will be held on Fridays at the Braselton
Brothers Store Complex on Davis Street. The market
opens at 4 p.m. and shoppers are asked to not enter
the market lot before 4 p.m. For the market vendor

“Milling Around Downtown is the day we open up
the old enterprise roller mill on Frances Street,” lead
ers state. “Mill guides will give tours of the first floor
between 4-7 p.m. Come see this wonderful historic
structure and learn how wheat and corn were milled
into flour and cornmeal.”
North GA 2 Cylinder Club will host a tractor show
at the event and Amy Pinnell will give walking tours
of downtown from 5-6:30 p.m. The walk is about a
mile-long and will take approximately one hour.
