Piedmont Athens Regional program helps child speak
Bency Stanley, 5, was
only a toddler when doc
tors diagnosed him with
autism spectrum disorder
and told his mother, Eliz
abeth, that he may never
speak. Determined to
give her son the best care,
she turned to the pediat
ric rehabilitation team at
Piedmont Athens Regional
for help.
“Being told Bency may
never speak crushed me,”
Elizabeth Stanley said.
For over two years, the
Jefferson mom has brought
Bency to Piedmont Ath
ens Regional weekly for
appointments with Kelley
Claas, a speech-language
pathologist. There. Claas
has worked with Bency to
assess his verbal abilities
and challenges, setting
goals to help him learn to
communicate effectively.
“Autism spectrum disor
der is unique in that every
child is going to have dif
ferent needs,” Claas said.
“When Bency comes in,
we work on finding tech
niques that work for him.

language and social skills.
“Kelley continues to find
new ways to help him,”
said Stanley. “We’ll be
moving to Hall County
soon for Bency’s school
ing, which will make our
drive to see Kelley even
longer, but she’s worth it.”

Once we identify things
that work, we build on
those techniques and teach
him to better express him
self.”
Bency’s speech-lan
guage therapy includes
techniques like the picture
exchange communication
system, where Claas shows
him an object or toy, and
Bency then hands her the
picture corresponding with
that object or toy. Recently,
he has even begun repeat
ing back words Claas gives
him as part of his therapy.
“Since seeing Kelley,
he does things he never
would’ve done before, like
hug. He’s become much
more affectionate,” Stan
ley said. “Most important
ly, my nonverbal child is
talking now!”
Autism spectrum disor
der affects approximately
