Honoring those who
‘gave all’ for country
All gave some; some
gave all,” is one of the
most touching quotes I
have heard about the life
of a soldier.
In my
younger days.
Memorial Day
symbolized
the start of my
summer vaca
tion.
We would
cook out, go to
the lake, take
a short trip, or
enjoy a family
reunion.
Today, I realize that
this day is so much more.
While it is about the free
doms we enjoy in the
United States, it is even
more about the people
who sacrificed so we may
enjoy these freedoms.
I am proud to say my
dad served in the military
in Fort Knox. Kentucky.
Just a baby. I only
remember the stories of
letters sent back and forth
and the trips home that
ended ever so quickly.
While my mom seemed
to have a longing in her
voice when she recalled
these memories, I could
tell she was also proud
of him as he served our
country in the United
States Army.
Twenty-plus year later,
I have been blessed to
watch another soldier
serve his country.
I remember when Chris
Boswell left Maysville to
start a career that would
change his life.
I watched a four-year
enlistment turn into a
career of service.
He would serve near
his family at times, and at
other times, he was gone
for extended periods.
Many times, he would be
on United States soil, but
at other times, he would
head for a tour on foreign
lands.
While life in the mili
tary changes everything
for the soldier, it also
changes the lives of the
ones the soldier loves.

Wives and children
miss dad until his safe
return. I am thankful to
God that he gives parents,
companions and
children the
strength they
need until their
soldier walks
back through
the door and
embraces them
once more.
Then solemn
ly, I thought of
the soldiers who
leave with the
best intentions
of coming home, but for
one reason or another,
they never make it back.
This was never more
real to me than when I
walked beside the World
War II Memorial in Wash
ington, D.C.
My fingers touched the
letters which formed the
names of so many coura
geous men and women....
the ones who gave all.
I thought of the par
ents, the companions, the
children, the siblings and
everyone who knew this
military hero. Oh, I can
not even imagine the void
in each life.
I pray that God’s hand
of protection will contin
ue to protect our men and
women as they proudly
serve our country.
In addition. I pray for
strength for all of the
families who love their
solider. I ask God to give
each one the peace that
passes all understanding.
We are part of a great
country and we enjoy so
many freedoms because
of the brave families who
accept the call to protect
and serve.
If you serve now; if
you have ever served; if
you have a family mem
ber who has ever served,
I say thank you and ask
everyone to pray for the
heroes of this great land.
