Summer reading program under way at Nicholson library
BUILD A BRIDGE WINNER

a Bridge Challenge at the Harold S. Swindle Public
Library in Nicholson.
Registration for the
Summer Reading Program
at the Harold S. Swindle
Public Library in Nichol
son is up and going.
“Come sign up and earn
prizes for reading this
summer,” library manager
Rhonda O'Keeffe reports.
“Kids will receive prizes
for every 10 books read or
five hours read.”
The “No Cost Seamless
Summer Lunch” program
for children ages 18 and
under is available at the
library. The school bus
will be onsite from 12:30
p.m. until 1 p.m. Mon
days through Fridays. The
lunches will be available
May 30 through July 28.
No meals will be served
Monday. July 3, or Tues
day, July 4. Lunches can
be eaten on the bus or
in the library. Lunch is
provided by the Jackson
County School Nutrition
Program.
On Tuesdays and Thurs
days, beginning in June,
the summer children’s
programs will be offered.
There is no charge for any
of these activities.

side the library on the
grounds), 2 p.m.
•June 20. Llama Llama
Drama: stories, crafts,
meet Llama Llama and
real Llamas, 3 p.m., Ben

•June 27. Twist Your
World: Fun with stories,
balloons and masks. 2 p.m.,
Benton School Annex.
June Thursday programs

•June 15, The Mighty
Lego Challenge: children
will choose a challenge
card and build the design.
Prize for the best design.
•June 22, The Kindness
Rock Project: decorate a
rock with an inspirational
message and/or design to
share in a random act of
kindness.
•June 29. Gardening
Day: children will exper
iment with gardening and
then enjoy a “sweet treat”
at the end of the program.
“We had our first sum
mer program at the library
on June 1,” O'Keeffe
reports. “The participat
ing children built a bridge
of their own design from
materials provided. The
winner of the design built
a bridge that stood and had
a creative use of material.”
O’Keeffe also states:
“One of the library's best
assets is our ability to
obtain the best sellers on
time and the latest DVDs.

Art and 3-D projects part of summer programs at Commerce library
STEAM Stations at the Commerce Public Library
involved nine activities ranging from Fibonacci Art and
Sphero Maze to Cubelets and 3-D Pens.
Children and their parents enjoyed three hours explor
ing all the activities.
Next week’s special programs include activities for
young adults and children. On Wednesday, June 14, at 4
p.m.. young adults are invited to create their own art from
a variety of materials. Their creations will be judged by
local art enthusiasts.
Children of all ages are invited on Thursday, June 13.
at 2 p.m. to take part in the 21st annual Water Fun at Wil
loughby Park. Join Children's Librarian Catherine Harris
and local firefighters for this popular program. Bring a
towel and be prepared to be drenched.
Sign-ups for the adult summer reading program began
on June 1 with over 25 names on the list already. Receive
a raffle ticket for every book checked out from the library.
Prizes will begin to be drawn starting in mid-June.
The Book Vine Book Club will meet on Friday, June
16, to discuss Liane Moriarity’s The Husband’s Secret.
Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk for
checkout. A warm welcome is extended to newcomers.
New adult fiction books on the shelves include: Karen
White’s The Night the Lights Went Out, Nora Roberts’
Come Sundown. Rita Mae Brown’s Hiss Before Dying.
Clive Cussler's Nighthawk, Wiliam W. Johnstone's Rem
ington 1894, Stephen King’s Gwendy's Button Box and
Sandra Byrd’s Roses Have Thoms: A Novel of Elizabeth
I.
There are also three new nonfiction books available: In
the Country We Love by Diane Guerrero, The Afternoon
Hiker - a Guide to Casual Hikes in the Great Smoky
Mountains by J. L. Stepp, and True Jesus by David Lim-
baugh.
Just in the last few weeks these audio books have been
placed on the shelves: The Fix by David Baldacci, Right
Behind You by Lisa Gardner, The Stars Are Fire by Anita
Shreve, Golden Prey by John Sandford, Old School by
Bill O’Reilly, and Killers of the Flower Moon by David
Grann. There are also new audio books in the juvenile and
young adult sections as well as a large collection of chil
dren’s picture books with accompanying CDs.

duction was “Montage of
Monologues,” which was
presented June 1-4. Diana
Norton-Bagwell directied
the production.
