WOMAN’S CLUB OFFICERS INSTALLED
Fifth annual pet photo
contest under way
Entries are now being taken for the fifth annual Cute Pet
Contest sponsored by The Jackson Herald.
There will be a first, second and third place winner in
both a cat and dog category. No other animals will be
considered. Also, do not submit photos with people in
them—cats or dogs only.
The prizes will be:
•First place: A three-year subscription (or renewal) to
one of the newspapers published by MainStreet Newspa
pers (a $75 value).
•Second place: A two year-subscription (or renewal) to
one of the newspapers published by MainStreet Newspa
pers (a $50 value).
•Third place: A one year-subscription (or renewal) to
one of the newspapers published by MainStreet Newspa
pers (a $25 value).
All first, second and third place winners will also be
featured in an upcoming issue of The Jackson Herald.
Honorable mention pets may be selected, at the judge’s
discretion. While there will be no prize for honorable
mention, the pets selected will also be featured in an
upcoming issue of The Jackson Herald.
Entries will be taken through June 14. Winners will be
announced in the June 21 issue.

Movie, car show
planned in Maysville
The Maysville Community Club will feature a movie
and car show on Saturday, June 10.
The car show begins at 5 p.m. with the movie to follow
at dark. The featured movie will be “The Shack.”
Both events are free and concessions will be available.
Upcoming events include a movie and car show on the
second Saturday of July and August.
The 50th annual Autumn Leaf Festival will be held
October 6-8.

coming up
The Jefferson Freedom
Festival will be held from
5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Satur
day. June 24.
The event will feature
food, fireworks and live
music from Fly Betty.
This year, additional fire
work seating will be avail
able beside the Regions
Bank drive-thru on Gordon
Street.
The City of Hoschton will host a free summer concert
on Saturday, June 17, from 7-10 p.m.
Moonshine Serenade and Wild Hares will be perform
ing in this “Jimmy Buffett style” concert.
Other highlights include a bouncy house, food vendors
and beer and wine vendors.
Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets.
Jefferson Farmers Market now open
The Jefferson Farmers Market is open every Saturday
from 8 a.m. to noon.
The farmers market opened on June 2 with a great
crowd, live music, and free admission to the Crawford
Long Museum, organizers state. The farmers market is
open on the downtown square in Jefferson every Saturday
morning through September.
Vendors have a variety of items, ranging from vegeta
bles. repurposed items, salsas. fresh bread, natural reme
dies. jellies and more.
Each week there is a different market theme. This
week, June 10, is “Make a Difference at the Market.”
Those who attend are asked to bring a canned food dona
tion and get a free reusable tote bag.

Vietnam veteran James Cool now makes his home in Jackson County. He
attended the recent Memorial Day Program in Jefferson.

Brevet Bike Ride supports Aplastic Anemia
The Jackson County
Brevet invites cyclists of
all levels, nationwide, to
sign up for their 8th annu
al Charity Bike Ride on
Saturday, June 17, in Bra-
selton. This event focus
es on research funding to
treat Aplastic Anemia.
Registration is $55
through June 11. Regis
tration is $65 from June
12-June 17.
The ride begins at 7:30
a.m. sharp. Same day reg
istration (if not sold out by
June 17) and pre-registra
tion check-in is open from
6 a.m. until 7 a.m. sharp.
Various rest stops with
food and drink (every 18
miles on average) will be
set up along the ride with
SAG vehicles on all routes.
Aplastic Anemia is a
rare, deadly condition in
which the bone marrow
fails to make enough blood
cells: red blood cells, white
blood cells, and platelets.
The disease can strike
people of any age, race
and gender, although more
common among children
and teenagers. Between
300 and 600 people are
diagnosed with Aplastic
Anemia each year in the
United States.
Following the event,
participants are invited to
a complimentary after-ride
meal provided by Buffalo
Wild Wings. A 2017 Can-
nondale CAAD 12 Ulteg-
ra Disc road bike will be
awarded to the raffle ticket
winner.
