MARCHING TOGETHER
Commerce High School band members practice their marching and formations during day three of band camp last week. Director
Leland Alexander said this year’s show will feature music from the “Wizard of Oz.” Last year the band performed to “Pure
Imagination” from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

Commerce
school
start times
change
Commerce city schools
have new starting times
for middle and high
school students starting
Friday morning.
Those students will
have to be at school 10
minutes earlier.
The middle school
classes will be from
7:35 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.
and high school students
will go from 8 a.m. to
3:05 p.m. High school
students who do not meet
academic criteria will
start at 7:35 a.m.
Commerce primary and
elementary schools will
remain on a 7:45 a.m. to
2:45 p.m. schedule.
The schedule change
will benefit students who
need extra help, Supt. Joy
Tolbert told the board of
education in April.
“We will use that addi
tional time at the middle
school and high school
for acceleration and
remediation.” Tolbert
told the board. She said
each student will have
“a designated time and
location during the day
where he or she can go
for help.”
Changing the hours
will allow the system to
“maximize the efficien
cy” of its bus routes, pro
viding extra classroom
time at the middle school
and high school, she said.
Each school will have
one round of buses morn
ings and afternoons.
“For that to happen, all
eight buses will pick up
primary and elementa
ry school students, then
all eight buses will go
out and pick up middle
school and high school
students,” the superinten
dent said.

WJMS FFA officers hone skills at retreat
By Lilly Farmer
West Jackson Middle FFA Reporter
West Jackson Middle School’s FFA
Officer Team sharpened their leadership
skills at a leadership retreat on June 26-29.
This was the first event of the year, and
the WJMS FFA officers learned about
their roles as officers and leaders in the
organization and made plans for the year.
While at the retreat, the officer team
completed the year’s calendar of events,
organized the program of activities, par
ticipated in team building initiatives, and
set goals for themselves and the chapter.
“The officer retreat is the first time
the new WJMS FFA officer team had the
opportunity to work together, and it is
essential for planning the upcoming year’s
events,” according to WJMS FFA advisor
April Davis.
The retreat was organized by Davis and
took place at her family’s lake house on
Clark Hill Lake in Lincolnton.
Any student at WJMS can join FFA.
