Howell to run for Jefferson
Jon Howell has announced plans to run for
the District 3 Jefferson City Council seat in
the upcoming November elections.
(Steve Quinn, who holds the District 3 coun
cil seat, intends to run for mayor.)
“Jefferson deserves strong leaders who
come to the table with creditable ideas, not
personal agendas,” said Howell. “If elected, I
look forward to being a fiscally conservative
and socially responsible voice on the coun
cil and will represent the 3rd district fairly
by including our youth, our seniors, and our
diverse neighborhoods.”
Howell is a member of the Rotary Club of
Jefferson, serves on the Jackson County Area
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors
and serves as a mentor to a local middle school
student through the Legacy Youth mentoring
program.
He is the Senior Vice President for Strategy
for the Community Health Services of Geor
gia. a non-profit organization that operates
Northridge Hospital in Commerce as well as
multiple healthcare facilities throughout the
state.
“I care deeply about our community,” said
council seat
Howell. “I consider serving on the council not
as a political position, but one of public ser
vice. I want to preserve all that is great about Jef
ferson and to make it an even better city for future
generations to work, play, and raise a family.”
Howell earned his undergraduate degree in
finance and master of business administration
from the University of Georgia.
Jon and his wife Emily have two daughters,
Georgie and Lucy, and are active members of
First Baptist Church of Jefferson.

Housing
survey
planned in
Commerce
A survey of all housing
in Commerce is planned to
start in September, but vol
unteers involved will not go
on owners’ property, City
Manager James Wascher
told city council members
Monday.
The survey is part of the
Georgia Initiative for Com
munity Housing, a project
in which the city is partic
ipating.
“It basically helps us plan
our housing for the future,”
Wascher said.
Volunteers will ‘take a
physical catalogue of every
home in the city,” Wascher
said.
He emphasized the sur
veyors will work only from
public property, will not go
on private property or ask
to go in houses.
“They’re not going to
enter onto the property at
all,” the city manager said.
Wascher said volunteers
also will wear green shirts
to identify them.
The survey is expect
ed to start in Ward 3 and
homeowners will get let
ters notifying them of the
work before it starts. Coun
cil member Donald Wilson
also asked that a commu
nity meeting be held in the
neighborhoods before sur
veying starts.
David Zellner, director of
the city’s planning office,
said the city also is seeking
“neighborhood captains,”
known to residents, to work
on the project.
Council members said
residents should be aware
of the project and surveyors
should be careful to stay off
private property.
