Dragon volleyball
team tested during
recent gauntlet

Jefferson has been rather
busy of late on the volleyball
court, having played eight
matches since Sept. 19.
The Dragons went 3-5
during that stretch and car
ried a 19-13 record heading
into this week’s action.
“We had an extremely
tough week with matches
back-to-back to back, includ
ing two 2-day tournaments
where we were placed in the
Gold Bracket,” coach Brittani
Lawrence said. “Although
these ladies were put through
the wringer, they certainly
held their own no matter who
was on the other side of the
net.”
The team beat Madison
County (25-16. 25-18) and
lost to North Oconee (25-
23, 16-25, 19-25) in area
play on Sept. 19, then lost
to North Hall (25-14, 25-23)
and Hebron Christian (25-23,
25-19) on Thursday. A four-
match tournament followed
over the weekend with the
team losing to Roswell (25-
23, 25-23) and Walker (25-
21, 25-21) and beating Cen
tennial (26-24, 19-25. 15-8)
and Grayson (25-12, 27-25)
“We played some top dog
schools from 6A to even
1A and proved that we can
hang.” Lawrence said of last
week’s schedule. “I absolute
ly love a competition and
believe it makes us stronger
mentally and physically.”
Jefferson, which played
North Oconee and Stephens
County this past Tuesday
night, will host Tallulah
Falls and Morgan County
on Thursday night for Senior
Night. The team will close
out area play next week and
then host the area tourna
ment Oct. 5 and 7.
With 32 matches in the
books, Savanna Davis and
Morgan Tetzlaff continue
to lead the team in kills,
according to Lawrence,
while Jo Jo Smith. Micayla
Stopher and Lauryn Lockett
are the top blockers on the
team. Kaitlyn Henderson
and Bri Gaba lead the team
in digs, while assist leader
Hannah Faith Watson is set
ting each ball she touches,
Lawrence said.
Cheerleading
JCCHS cheerleaders
win at Collins Hill
The Jackson County
competitive cheerleading
squad posted its second
win in as many events with
a first-place finish in Class
AAA competition at Col
lins Hill on Saturday.
The Panthers totaled 58
points to earn the victory,
finishing ahead of Morgan
County by half a point.
“We hit a clean rou
tine with zero deductions
whereas they had a few
deductions,” coach Wayne
Brooks said. “Keeping
things simple and clean
seems to be the key right
now. We have grown so
much as an all-girl squad,
and it’s amazing what we
accomplish each day with
our effort, attitude and
toughness. That is our
school motto — E.A.T. for
short — and these girls live
it each day. They are a joy
to work with daily.”
The team will compete
this Saturday at Mill Creek.
Cheerleading
Dragons place second
in competitive cheer meet
The Jefferson Dragon
competitive cheerleading
team nabbed a second-place
finish in the Class AAAA
division Saturday at Com
merce, finishing ahead
of Madison County and
behind Chestatee.
Jefferson entered this
meet slowed a bit by inju
ries, requiring the team to
re-work its routine. The
team, however, expects to
be closer to full strength for
this Saturday’s meet at Mill
Creek.
“We are adding more
difficult elements to our
routine each week to help
improve our scores while
continuing to work on exe
cution,” coach Hillary Jones
said. “Our focus for this
season is to be the best ver
sion of ourselves as a team
and to get better each and
every week.”
Jones praised the focus of
her athletes.
“They have the drive it
takes to win and understand
how to work together as a
team, even when situations
aren’t ideal,” she said.

Jefferson wins on Cox’s walk-off homer
HIGH-FIVES

Jefferson bounced back
from a tough region loss with
a dramatic region win.
The Dragons (13-7, 7-2),
who fell to Oconee Coun
ty 4-3 last Tuesday (Sept.
19), beat visiting Madison
County 3-1 in eight innings
on Thursday with a walk-
off, two-run homerun from
Cesyrea Cox.
“I was extremely proud
of our girls with how they
responded after the loss to
Oconee,” coach Kacie Bost-
wick said. “What I was most
proud of was the fact that in
the game against Madison
our kids played extremely
selfless.”
Sam Vinson tied the game
1-1 with a solo homer in the
bottom of the sixth inning
and Cox won the game with
her two-run homer in the
bottom of the eighth.
“Both C.C. (Cesyrea) Cox
and Sam Vinson came up
with huge hits for us when
they were needed.” Bostwick
said.
The selfless play Bostwick
referred to included three
sacrifice bunts from Camer
on Watson, as well as a sac
rifice bunt from Vinson after
homering in her previous
at-bat. Emily Perrin pitched
all eight innings, allowing
four hits and one earned run
while striking out six. Mad
ison County scored its lone
run in the fourth inning.
“Emily Perrin stayed
focused on the mound
despite being down a run,”
Bostwick said.
In its loss to Oconee Coun
ty, Jefferson trailed for most
of the night, falling behind
2-1 after the second inning
and 4-2 after six.
Dawson Horn went 3-for-
3 in the loss with two runs
scored.
Jefferson was slated to
take on Stephens County
on Tuesday in a game with
major implications towards
deciding the top seed for the
Region 8-AAAA tourna
ment.
NON-REGION WIN
The Jefferson softball
team picked up a 6-4 non-re
gion win over East Hall on
Monday. Sam Vinson went
2-for-4, while Dawson Horn
