Man reports fraud with bank account
Commerce PD
Commerce police called
for social media scam
Authorities were called last week for a social media scam.
Commerce Police Department officers responded to calls of
identity fraud on Pine Street. A man gave someone his debit
card pin. Social Security number, address and date of birth while
responding to a "make money” post on social media.
He also reportedly gave someone his debit card and several
purchases were made.
The victim’s father cancelled the account.
OTHER INCIDENTS
Other incidents reported to the CPD were:
•criminal trespass on Cotton Street where someone drew an
obscenity about the homeowner in a window trim.
•no insurance and vehicle tow on South Elm Street.
•vehicle tow on Hwy. 441. The driver was stopped for speed
ing (78/55) and officers learned the vehicle didn’t have insur
ance. The owner of the vehicle said he put insurance on several
of his company vehicles but must have forgotten that one. The
driver was cited for speeding.
•entering auto on Mt. Olive Road where a woman said some
one broke into her unlocked vehicle while she took her child into
daycare. They reportedly took an iPhone and left the scene,
•suicide threats on South Elm Street where a man reportedly
took a multitude of pills and placed a knife on his neck and chest
several times. He refused to put the knife down and an officer
ultimately had to grab his arm and move the knife away. The man
was taken to the hospital.
•theft by taking at Willoughby Homes where someone stole
a bike.
•no insurance, vehicle tow and unregistered vehicle on Hwy.
441.
ARRESTS
Arrests made by the CPD were:
•Ever Omar Castillo Recinos, 29, 64 Jefferson Avenue,
Commerce — driving while unlicensed. Castillo was stopped
after officers saw him using his phone while stopped at a yield
sign. He was arrested after they learned he didn’t have a driver’s
license.
•Lucas Santiz Lopez, 33,935 Homer Road Lot 21, Commerce
— driving while unlicensed. Lopez was stopped for a taillight
violation and arrested after officers learned he didn’t have a
license.
•Thomas Mason Gordon, 18, 2005 Planter Gunnell Road,
Hull — possession of marijuana less than an ounce. Gordon was
the passenger in a vehicle pulled over for failing to dim its high-
beam lights. Officers smelled marijuana and Gordon handed
over the substance. Officers searched the vehicle and found an
additional small marijuana cigar that was smoked earlier in the
night. Gordon claimed ownership and was arrested.
•Hendry Ledara Watson, 41, 544 MLK Jr. Drive, Commerce
— driving under the influence (DUI)-alcohol and probation vio
lation. Officers saw Watson’s vehicle parked in a lot and remem
bered it from a previous incident. (They also knew the owner
had a warrant.) Officers approached and asked for the driver’s
identification. Watson reportedly had to use the car to keep bal
ance. He was reportedly irritated and asked why officers were
bothering him. They smelled alcohol on him and noticed other
signs that he was possibly impaired. He refused to take a sobriety
test or breath test and was arrested for the warrant. Officers found
a cold 12-ounce Corona beer in the vehicle.
•Deteriunte Jamielle Smith, 27, no address listed, Athens —
warrant service.
•Angela Renee Bruce, 41, 776 Duncan Swindle Road, Com
merce — possession of marijuana less than an ounce and speed
ing. Bruce was stopped for speeding (72/55) and officers smelled
marijuana. She handed over some of the substance and admitted
there was more in the vehicle. Officers retrieved the marijuana
and arrested Bruce.
•Jedidiah Daniel Gentry, 26, 301 Jasmine Trail, Athens, and
David Eugene Robinson, 49, 854 A.C. Smith Road, Commerce
— possession of drug-related objects. Gentry faces additional
charges of Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act
and seat belt violation. The two were stopped because Gentry
wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. A K9 unit was called and had a
“change in behavior” after approaching the vehicle. Officers
searched the vehicle and found syringes and methamphetamine
(which Gentry claimed). He said the drug must have fallen out
of his backpack which he said belonged to a friend. Both were
arrested.
JCSO incidents - Nicholson
Dispute between son
and elderly mother
A woman on Pace Drive contacted the Jackson County Sher-
riff’s Office about a dispute between her and her son and his
girlfriend.
She stated that while she was asleep on the couch, her son and
his girlfriend came in to cuss and yell at her about her dogs being
outside. She then said that she went to her bedroom and either
her son or the girlfriend slammed the door and knocked her over.
The son however said that she slammed the door and knocked
herself over to blame him. He did admit to yelling at her for
always sleeping to which the officer reminded the son of how
old the mother is.
OTHER INCIDENTS
Other incidents reported to the JCSO in Nicholson were:
•suspicious person on Broad Street where a woman was
concerned about a man that was standing outside the business
that she was in charge of closing. But the man was only there
for free WiFi.
•theft or loss of mislaid property on Sanford Road where a
woman lost her work issued tablet and thinks it may have been
stolen.
•suspicious person on Church Street where a woman heard a
loud noise outside her residence. Her husband went outside and
only saw a reflection of someone. He also found a dollar bill on
the back of his truck.
•burglary and theft by taking on Tolbert’s Trail where a woman
found 35 bags of salt and 30 wooden pallets from her bam.
•welfare check on New Kings Bridge Road where a woman
wanted police to check on her mother. The mother’s phone was
messing up and she said she'd email her daughter.
•information on Steeplechase Road where a woman wanted
someone to discipline her child who runs off to his girlfriend’s
house and refuses to come home.
•possible harassment where a woman complained about
receiving threatening messages from a woman in a church group
chat on Facebook.
•theft by deception on Deerebrook Drive where a man com
plained about paying a man upfront to trim trees on his property,
but the man never came to do the work.
A man said his debit card at HALLCO Community Credit
Union was used three times Sept. 19 and $1,500 was stolen.
He said The debit card was used at a Publix store in East
Point, Cumberland Parkway in East Point and another Publix
store at Carmia Drive in East Point.
He said he has not given the card number to anyone.
MULTIPLE TREES DAMAGED
A man said he had multiple trees cut or chopped at a house
for sale that he owns.
The damage occurred between Sept. 3-9.
He checks on the house every week and he found damage
the week of Sept. 11.
He said he also found a long-bladed knife that could have
cause the damage.
He said the trees might die from the damage.
OTHER INCIDENTS
Other incidents in the Jefferson area reported to the Jackson
County Sheriff’s Office recently include:
•the manager of Publix on Highway 124 said one of his
employees tested positive for intoxication. He asked if she
could get someone to pick her up or if he could give her a ride
and she "yelled, 'Get away from me.'”
•a woman said her daughter’s husband called her, saying
he could not get in touch with his wife. The mother said she
found her daughter's 1-year-old son walking around the house
with no one else there. The daughter was alert when a deputy
arrived, but she said she did not know what was going on. She
said a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse had taken care of her
son from noon to 4 p.m. because he has had medical problems
since he was bom. She ran errands and stopped at a bar “to
have a glass of wine before going home to relieve some stress.”
She said a man at the bar "kept hitting on her and buying her
more drinks.” She said she did not remember the nurse leaving
the house. The daughter was taken to Northeast Georgia Med
ical Center in Braselton for tests to see if "someone may have
slipped something” in her drink.
•a school bus broke down on Jackson Trail Road Sept. 21
and was partially in the road. The students on the bus were put
on another one to be taken home.
•a woman said South State Bank notified her that someone
had made charges to her account with a fraudulent debit card.
Charges of $450 and $451 were made at a Publix in Smyrna
Sept. 20. Another charge of $4 was made at a Publix in Atlanta.
•a deputy found a Ford pickup in a ditch with a tire in the
middle of Brockton Road near Red Tail Road. He said the
driver was “heavily intoxicated” and “she could barely stand”
when she got out of the truck. She was trying to start the truck
when the deputy arrived. The truck appeared to be inoperable,
he said.
•a couple on Clover Mill Road reported a stolen Mossberg
Model 500 .12-gauge shotgun. The couple is divorcing and
discovered the theft after an earlier call Sept. 20 to the sheriff's
office. The man said the shotgun is worth $450, is pump action
and has a pistol grip. The woman said the last time she saw the
shotgun was the night before, Sept. 19.
•a man said he was watching property for a friend and saw
two vehicles on the property that should not have been there.
He saw a Jeep and a green car at the property on Golden Nug
get Way. He said the friend leases the property for his horses.
•a woman said she has received "several dozen phone calls’’
from a variety of businesses, asking for another woman. She
said she does not know the person. A deputy got the other
woman’s information from previous incident reports.
•a man said his brother called, told him to come to his house
and to bring his gun. The man said his brother "possibly” had
a chug problem. Deputies found the brother at his house, but
he could not explain why he called his brother. A deputy said
he might be under the influence, "constantly moving around.”
Deputies found an unused, capped syringe, small pieces of
burned aluminum foil, a spoon and a comer of a clear baggy
with white residue - all on the bed. The brother said he did not
know who the items belong to.
•a man said his daughter took his Ford Explorer after pick
ing up items for him at Walmart. He said he had texted her
several times. She said she would return it soon, but never did.
•a woman on Gum Springs Church Road said she came
home about 9:25 p.m. and found multiple lights on and the
front door open with a key in the handle. She said the key was
under a flower pot near the door, but multiple family members,
an ex-boyfriend and her sister’s ex-boyfriend knew where it
was. She said the only thing missing was a 26-inch Emerson
TV. A burned rag was on the counter near the stove in the
kitchen. The back door also was open.
•a man said he is building a house on South Pear Grove
Court and one of his contractors told him tools were stolen
from the job site. The contractor said a miter saw, table saw
and floor buffer were taken. The man said door locks had not
been installed at the house yet.
•a man said his wife would not allow him to have time with
their children, despite a temporary protective order against him
that includes a child-custody arrangement within it. It was the
second time he called about her not letting the children visit.
His mother was to pick up the children and his wife would not
let them go unless his mother told her where they would be.
•a woman on Meadow Creek Drive said she left a pair of
gold and diamond earrings and a gold bracelet on the freezer
in her garage while cutting the grass and they were gone when
she went back to get them. The jewelry was worth $775, she
said. A neighbor is on video entering and leaving the garage,
she told deputies. The neighbor said he was there but denied
taking anything.
•a man on Swann Court said his juvenile daughter told him
she found a baggie with white powder in it, took some of it
and it made her face numb. The man said the girl’s mother had
the baggie. A deputy took it and it tested positive for cocaine.
The man said everyone in the house denied owning it. The
man said he believed it belonged to a woman staying with him.
She consented to a drug test the man had bought. She tested
positive for PCP and methamphetamine.
•a man said he had an argument with his wife when they
were drinking and playing a card game. She got the car keys
and started driving away, but her father got the keys from
her.
•a man complained he was walking his dog on a leash
when a neighbor's dog attacked his dog. The man fought
to get them apart and started back to his house. The
neighbor's dog attacked a second time, and the man said
he grabbed it by the neck and choked it to get it to release
his dog. The owner said her dog did not have a leash and
had not had a rabies shot.
•a man was found at a store at Doster Road and High
way 124. He said he had taken a handful of Xanax, but
he did not know how many. He said he "wanted to go see
his son in heaven.” He was taken to the hospital.
•a man was issued multiple citations after a traffic
stop. He was on a motorcycle and did not stop when a
deputy turned on his lights, then his siren. The man said
he did not hear the car and has no rear mirrors. He had a
title, but had not registered the bike.
•a man said someone attempted to steal his mailbox. It
was the third time in a few months it has been damaged
or someone tried to steal it. He said the mail box was
bent over and three of the four bolts holding it had been
taken off. It appeared to have been unbolted with a tool.
•a man said he was driving on McNeal Road when a
Ford Explorer began following too closely. The man said
he accelerated as the truck passed him on a double yel
low line. He said the man driving motioned to him to pull
over. He did not. The man said he pulled into a conve
nience store and the man in the Explorer "drove over the
median,” into the store where he “punched the passenger
side of the truck in between the windows.”
