JCSO arrests
Two charged for cattle theft
Two Commerce men face theft charges after they allegedly
stole cattle and sold some of the cows at an auction.
Marty Lamar Baird, 46, 631 Groaning Rock Road, and
Charlie Keith Leachman, 78, 1264 Harris Lord Cemetery
Road, face charges of livestock theft. Baird faces an additional
charge of parole violation while Leachman faces additional
charges of dugs not in original container and possession of a
Schedule II drug (Oxycodone).
The two are accused of stealing four cows from a Cabin
Creek Road pasture. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office detec
tives discovered possible sweet feed on the scene and suspected
the cows were possibly corralled into a gate. They saw several
cattle gate segments stacked against an old van.
They also discovered tire tracks in the area.
Leachman is accused of taking some of the cows to an
auction in Athens. After they were sold, the check was written
out to Baird. He picked up the check and cashed it before the
transaction could be stopped.
Four cows, worth over $3,200, were all found.
JCSO deputies later found Leachman and arrested him for
the warrant. He denied stealing the cattle and pointed the finger
at Baird.
Officers found an Oxycodone pill bottle in Leachman’s
pocket that contained Oxycodone, Oxycontin and Hydroco-
done.

leaving a restaurant in downtown Commerce. The alleged
victim said the altercation started after he confronted a man
for telling a woman to “Shut the f**k up or I’ll bust your head
up against the wall.”
He said three or four men then jumped on him and he

altercation.
One of the suspects also reportedly kicked him in the side.

man attacked him. He didn’t remember much, though, and
said he blacked out. When he came to, he punched a wall
which caused significant injury to his hand.
