Commerce natives set to
coach against each other
This coming Saturday's Furman-Mercer football will
have a local flavor as two Commerce natives will coach
against one another.
Furman coach Clay Hendrix and Mercer coach Bobby
Lamb both played high school football at Commerce and
helped the Tigers win the 1981 Class AA state title. Both
then played together at Furman from 1982-1985.
Lamb, after a longtime stint as a Furman assistant
(1986-2001), went on to serve as head coach of Furman
(2002-2010) and became Mercer’s coach when the Bears
re-started their program in 2013. Clay Hendrix was a
longtime assistant coach at Furman (1988-2007) and then
at Air Force (2007-2016) before getting the Furman job.
Furman and Mercer play at 1:30 p.m. in Greenville.

Jefferson diver bound for UGA
Jefferson diver Addison Kelly has committed to the
University of Georgia after finishing fourth in the state
in 1-meter diving last season. Kelly earned four top-10
finishes and grabbed All-American honors in two events
at the AAU Nationals in August.
Kelly will become the second member of the Jefferson
swimming and diving team to join an SEC team. Camille
Porter, a state champion in 2016, swims for Auburn.
Dragon goalkeeper
announces college choice
Jefferson standout goal keeper Sophia LaMar has
committed to Andrew College, a two-year school in
Cuthbert. LaMar recorded a team-record 11 shutouts
last year as the Drgaons reached the Class AAAA Final
Four. She was named to both the 8-AAAA All-Region
team and the MainStreet Newspapers all-area team this
past spring.
Jefferson wrestler
commits to Campbell
Jefferson wrestler Coy Strong has committed to
Campbell, a Division-I school in North Carolina. Strong
finished sixth in the 145-pound Class AAAA bracket last
season and took sixth in the 138-pound class in Class
AAA in 2016.
JHS fishermen place high
The Jefferson High School bass fishing team enjoyed
a big weekend in a tournament hosted by the Georgia
High School Fishing / Student Angler Federation on
Lake Lanier.
The tandem of Jackson Lamb and Clayton Wood
took second out of 116 boats with a total catch of 14.32
pounds, while the duo of Eli Corbett and Colby Wood
finished third with a catch of 14.12 pounds.
Jefferson’s Wheeler helps lift club team to title
Jefferson junior Nich
olas Wheeler helped
lead his club soccer
team, Athens United
Soccer Association, to a
recent tournament title
in South Carolina.
Playing at the Caroli
na Elite Soccer Acade
my, the team beat rival
Concord Fire of Atlanta
in penalty kicks after a
1-1 tie at the end of reg
ulation and overtime.
The versatile Wheel
er — who plays striker,

nament — was 3-1 in
the penalty stage of
overtime and scored
the go-ahead goal as
his team took home the
title.

“If they get the inside
established, then the out
side is very difficult to take
away from them,” Cathcart
said.
It’s also imperative that
Jefferson’s defense not
allow this clock-draining
offense to convert a string
of third downs and monop
olize the time of possession
as option teams like to do.
Defensively. St. Pius X
uses a 4-3 base scheme
which will present a change
from the 3-4 schemes Jef
ferson has largely seen this
year. Defensive lineman/
linebacker Marco Dinkins,
safety Zachary Ranson
and Mitchell, a linebacker,
are among the leaders on
that side of the ball for the
Golden Lions.
“They’re just as disci
plined on defense as they
are on offense,” Cathcart
said.
St. Pius X — a perennial
10-win team under coach
Paul Standard before going
2-9 last year — is off to a
fast start in region play after
dropping its first five games
of the season against what
Cathcart called an “NFL-
type” pre-region schedule.
The Golden Lions faced
Blessed Trinity, Benedic
tine. Marist. Greater Atlanta
Christian and Lanier, nearly
beating Marist (ranked third
in Class AAAA) and Lanier.
St. Pius then beat Ste
phens County 28-13 in its
region opener Oct. 6 before
walloping Oconee County
last week.
Cathcart called the Gold
en Lions’ win over Oconee
County “a very physical
and impressive win in every
phase of the game.”
Jefferson comes into this
game playing well on both
sides of the ball, having won
its two region games by a
combined 93-0. But those
winning ways will be tested
by a St. Pius X program
buoyed by having already
played a murder’s row
schedule.
“As cliche as it sounds,
they may be the best 2-5
team — not just in the state
— they may be the best 2-5
team anywhere in the South
east because of who they’ve
played,” Cathcart said.
This will be only the sec
ond meeting between these
two programs and the first
at St. Pius X’s George B.
Maloof Stadium. Jefferson
is prepared for a hostile
environment in Atlanta.
“We’ve got to expect an
incredible atmosphere,”
Cathcart said. “All their
stands are on our side where
our sideline is on, so I’m
sure it will be very difficult
to communicate.”
Jerseys... continued from page IB
bination of everything that
he did here and being the
first guy from Jefferson ever
to be drafted by a profes
sional team and definitely
the first one ever to play in
the Majors,” Knight said.
The coach said it was
satisfying for him to see
Beck to receive this honor,
remembering when the
now-6-3, 230-pound right
hander “started as a scrawny
150-pound freshman.”
“Now he’s a Major
League pitcher, and that for
me, as a coach is really, real
ly cool to see and be a part
of.” Knight said.
As for Mosley, the former
Dragon football standout did
a little bit of everything for
Jefferson’s program during
his career that spanned from
2003 to 2006.
Jefferson athletic direc
tor, Bill Navas, pointed to
Mosley’s major versatility
as a contributor in all three
phases of the game. Mosley
earned first-team all-region
honors at defensive end as
a sophomore, first-team
all-region recognition as a
linebacker, tight end and
punter as a senior, and all-
state honors as a tight end as
a senior.
“I don’t know how many
people have done that,”
Navas said. “I think he was
an impressive player.”
Mosley then played both
ways in JUCO before trans
ferring to Auburn where he
won a national title as a
junior and was an All-SEC
selection as a senior. He
spent three seasons in the
NFL.
Navas believes Mosley —
now an assistant coach at
Jefferson — would still be
playing in the NFL if not for
an injury.
“Retiring his jersey is
probably long overdue, but
really deserved,” Navas said.
“His body of work is amaz
ing.”
Mosley’s honor was par
ticularly special for Navas,
who was Mosley’s football
coach at Jefferson.
“He and I have been very
close,” Navas said. “He’s the
kind of kid, his personal
ity is so infectious. I love
him like a son, always have
always will.”
While both numbers will
still be used by the respec
tive athletic programs,
Beck’s jersey will be fea
tured in foul territory on the
outfield wall at Horace Jack-
son Field, while a plaque
commemorating Mosley
will be placed in the new
football field house.
