Jefferson’s volleyball season
ended in the state tournament,
but the Dragons didn’t go into
the offseason quietly.
The team fell in a close
match on the road on Thurs
day, losing to Heritage-Catoosa
in four sets.
Jefferson finished the season
at 24-17.
“It was an intense match
where all players, coaches
and fans were on the edge of
their seats,’’ second-year coach
Brittani Lawrence said. "Both
teams were evenly matched,
and I can honestly say that the
Lady Dragons showed up and
battled with all their might.”
The Dragons dropped two
close sets - 25-23 and 25-20 —
to start the match, before forc
ing a fourth set with a 25-20
victory. But Heritage-Catoosa
to put the Panthers up by one
set.
The team then won a back-
and-forth second set, which
included four lead changes.
Taylor Roland ended the set
with a kill to give Jackson
County a two-set lead.
The Panthers trailed mid
way through the third set, but
regained the lead at 17-12
with an 8-0 run highlighted
by three aces from Roland.
Alanna Dorsey later put the
Panthers up 24-20 with a tap at
the net. Following an East Hall
point, Roland placed a shot
out of the Vikings’ reach for
the match-winner, setting off a
celebration.
“We knew coming in it was
going to be a back-and-forth
match,’’ Fowler said. “They’re
well-coached. We knew they
were going to fight. Hats off to
them. They made some runs,
but we always seemed to man
age to comeback from them
and get a lead.”
Jackson County, which beat
East Hall in two sets in its Aug.
5 opener and lost a three-set
match to the Vikings later that
month, used its previous two
matches with East Hall to its
advantage.
“During practice, we did a
lot of training on the short balls
because they know our weak
ness, so we had to straighten
that up,” Moua said.
Fowler said he believed the
team's preparation made a
major difference.
“We sat back and we looked
at the game film from last time
and had notes,” he said. "We
took everything that they did
well and we put our girls in
those situations the past two or
three days.”
took the fourth set 25-18 to win
its 29 th match of the year and
move on to the Sweet 16.
“I am amazed at the talent
I witnessed that night and can
state that each player walked
off the court with the mental
ity ‘We gave it everything we
had,”’ Lawrence said.
Lawrence said her team
weathered its share of challeng
es this year in getting back to
the state tournament.
“We definitely didn’t travel
on ‘easy street' and had our
fair share of bumps in the road,
but these ladies still trained
mentally and physically each
day to be better than they were
yesterday,” she said. “Overall,
these ladies will forever and
always have a special place in
my heart, and on behalf of the
coaching staff, we wish them
the absolute best.”
Having now qualified for the
Elite Eight, this Jackson Coun
ty team continues to make a
memorable season all the more
memorable. The Panthers’
highlights include an undefeat
ed run through area play and an
area championship.
Moua said there was a belief
early on that this team would
go far. Now it’s a reality.
“I feel like we could have
potential, but actually we're
here right now, so it feels so
good,” Moua said.
Dorsey, a senior setter and
hitter, recalled the steps it took
to get to this point.
“I’m really proud of where
we’ve come from since our
freshman year,” Dorsey said.
“From not making the playoffs
(in our) sophomore year and
improving from last year just
making to the Sweet 16 and
(now) making it even further,
I’m really proud of everyone
and coach Fowler.”
Fowler called the moment
“awesome.”
“These girls have been
through the ups and downs,
and they’re deserving of it,”
he said. “They come out every
day and give us two and a
half hours of the most intense
practices around. It’s very satis
fying for me as a coach. I could
not be more proud of the effort
that they displayed, just getting
these fans in here and getting
people excited about volleyball
again in Jackson County.”

of the state tournament last
Wednesday, 25-6, 25-9, 25-8.

The East Jackson Eagles
volleyball team advanced
to the second round of the
Class AAA playoffs after
sweeping past Lakeview Fort
Oglethorpe last Wednesday
afternoon.
The Eagles were set to
play top-ranked North Hall
this past Tuesday in the
Sweet 16 but results weren’t
available.
The final scores from last
Wednesday’s matches: 25-9,
25-19 and 25-10.
“They did amazing,” first-
year head coach Kortney
Kurtz said of her group.
She ran two different line
ups throughout the course of
the match, with some players
playing different positions
than normal.
“We reset goals on Mon
day for today,” she said. “We
don’t want to push our goals
all on the state. We need to
focus on the little things, the
games on the way.”
The three goals were pas
sionate attitude, stay focused
and be reactive,
“With those three goals,
they did just what they need
ed to do tonight,” Kurtz said.
“I’m beyond proud of them.
They did well with switching
things up, trying new things.”
She calls her team one of
the most “conditioned” teams
and they don’t have to worry
about tired.
“We’re one of the smartest
teams,” she said. “They know
so many shots, so many dif
ferent opportunities, so many
options. We don't have to
worry about that either. We
just have to stay focused, be
passionate and be reactive
and we got it. That’s what
they did.”
Cross country round-up
Shelafoe, Class AAA’s top runner, wins again
By Ben Munro
East Jackson’s Shane Shelafoe added
another win in what’s shaping up to be
a standout junior season, taking first at
Saturday’s Sharptop Invitational with a
time of 16:09.56.
This is Shelafoe’s fourth victory in five
races this year.
“He ran a really good race,” coach
Tomy Sitton said. “He kind of laid back
the first half mile and kind of took off
after that.”
Not only has Shelafoe taken over as
East Jackson’s No. 1 runner following
the graduation of Chase and Chandler
Kennedy, he is Class AAA’s top-ranked
runner with a PR of 15:45.80 set earlier
this month.
Shelafoe bested Class AAA’s sec
ond-ranked runner, Murray County’s
Jesse Martinez, by just over 24 seconds
on Saturday.
“I think he’s getting stronger, and I
think he’s getting a little bit smarter with
his races,” Sitton said.
Sitton said the key for Shelafoe as he
nears region and state competition to “just
get a little bit stronger everyday” and stay
healthy.
The Eagles will run their final regu
lar season race Wednesday at Riverside,
where Shelafoe has a chance to produce
one of his lowest times.
“That’s a really fast course,” Sitton
said. “I’m going to let him go out quicker
than he has the first mile.”
As for the rest of the team, East Jack-
son finished fourth out of 21 teams in
boys’ standings at Sharptop with 159
points.
Rounding out the top five were Marco
Flores (20 th , 17:25.49), Sobe Strong
(30 th , 17:43.36), Andree Menchaca (33 rd ,
17:52.29) and Luis Hernandez (87 th ,
19:06.58).
“We had a really strong race from our
front four,” Sitton said.
Lissett Miranda led the girls’ team
with a 13 th -place finish (20:30.91), fol
lowed by Tanea Davis (98 th , 24:08.89),
Anna Fox (109 th , 24:29.54), Emily Parker
(111 th , 24:30.16) and Sheena Lim (126 th ,
25:16.18).
The East Jackson girls, who ran with
out an injured Sue Ann Morales, finished
14 th out of 20 teams.
Sitton likes the direction the season is
taking as the region meet nears.
“Yeah, I’m really happy with the way
things are progressing with the boys; the
girls are about a year away,” Sitton said,
pointing to talent rising out of the middle
school girls program.
MILLER, HENDLEY
PACE PANTHERS
Jackson County’s Dawson Miller and
Russell Hendley each earned top-20 fin
ishes individually at Saturday’s Sharptop
Invitational, placing 17 th and 18 th respec
tively.
Armando Gonzales (96 th , 19:13.68),
Eli Griffeth (106 th , 19:39.12) and Jon
Gregor (117 th , 20:02.14) added points for
the Panthers, who finished 11 th out of 20
teams.
Jaycie Ponce led the Jackson Coun
ty girls with a 26 th -place showing
(21:19.14), followed by Kayla Sheppard
(30 th , 21:42.97), Hayden Ponce (66 th ,
23:07.99), Madeleine Mierzejewski (99 th ,
24:09.39) and Montgomery Garland
(116 th , 24:42.68).
The Lady Panthers placed 10 th out of
20 teams.
HILDEBRAND TAKES 11™
Jefferson’s Derek Hildebrand finished
11 th in the boys’ varsity gold race at Sat
urday’s Coach Wood Invitational with
a time of 17:11.5 as the Dragons took a
small crew to the Gainesville meet.
Justice Ogbe was the only other runner
taking part in the race, taking 37 th with a
time of 17:55.22.
