in Jackson County government as an employee in the tax

A petition was signed by 600 people in support of this
action, which was then approved by the Georgia House

life full of love of God and family, civic activities related
to her fellow man. and a professional life in her beloved
courthouse in Jefferson.”
Mrs. Maddox worked as the voter registrar for 33 years,
from 1958 through 1991, when she retired at the age of 85.
While serving as the voter registrar, Mrs. Maddox was
the selective service secretary for Jackson County during
the Vietnam War. where it is noted that she “handled the
job with grace during a time when she was often criticized
due to the unpopularity of the war.”
“She loved her country and the young men that served
in the Armed Services,” her daughter, Janet Thomas states.
“Every time a bus of inductees left Jefferson, she gave the
young men a hug and looked each and every one in the eye
and had a message of love for them.”
Mrs. Maddox was a member of the United Methodist
Church, where she organized a group now called the
United Methodist Women in 1941 at Nicholson United
Methodist Church.

of the United Methodist Athens Elberton District for many
years. She was also a Sunday School teacher.
