Frances Armstrong

Armstrong passed
away on May 25,
2018, in Com
merce, Ga.
Bom March
21, 1928, in
Franklin County,
Ga., Frances was
the youngest
child and only
daughter of the
late James E. and
Emma Bellamy
Varner. She was
the widow of Edward Bruce Armstrong.
Frances graduated from Franklin
County High School, began her college
studies at Georgia State and completed
her education degree at the University
of Georgia, where she met her future
husband.
Frances and Bruce were married
for 62 years and are survived by four
children, Mary Stone (Jeffrey), Robert
Armstrong, Barbara Armstrong, Athens,
and Carol Beard (Russell), Simpson-
ville, S.C.; and five grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by brothers, Mau
rice Varner, Tampa, Fla., W.T. Varner,
Commerce, Roy Varner, Covington, and
Aubrey Varner, Fayetteville, Ga.
Frances worked for many years as a
substitute teacher in the Clarke County
School District and was an active mem
ber of the community serving as a Girl
Scout leader, hospice volunteer, trail
guide at Sandy Creek Nature Center
and 1996 Olympic Games volunteer, to
list just a few.
She was loved by many for her quick
wit and kind heart.
Like her husband, Frances
bequeathed her body to the Medical
College of Georgia to advance medical
training.
The family would like to express
thanks and gratitude to the loving care
she received from the staff at Bountiful
Hills Personal Care in Commerce.
A memorial service to celebrate her
life will be held Saturday, June 16, at 10
a.m. in Walker Hall at the Sandy Creek
Nature Center, 205 Old Commerce Rd.,
Athens, GA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to the Humane Society or Sandy
Creek Nature Center.

- Precious Baby Boy Issac Trey Alexan
der Carroll passed away peacefully on
Saturday, June 9,2018.
Baby Issac was bom on May 14,
2018, in Athens, the son of Brenda Car-
roll and Jeff Russell. He was preceded
in death by his maternal grandparents,
Edward and Marie Carroll and great-
grandparents, Alton and Gertrude Bol
linger. He was a loving son, brother,
nephew, and cousin. “You will always
be my precious little nugget, Love Aunt
Amie.”
In addition to his mother and father,
survivors include his siblings, Kristin
Sears, Elizabeth Russell, and Michael
Russell; aunts, Amie White and Amelia
Hill; uncles, Edward Carroll, Chris Car-
roll, Lennord Carroll, Tony White, and
Guy White; and many cousins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
June 12, at Whitfield Funeral Home in
Baldwin, with the Rev. Shane Moore
officiating. Interment was in Danielsville
Memorial Gardens.

Judson Christopher
WINDER - Judson Christopher, 70,
entered into rest on Friday, June 1,2018.
Jud was bom in Watkinsville, Ga.,
the son of the late
Inus and Evie Mae
Christopher. He
served his country
in the Vietnam War
from 1966-1968 and was awarded a
Purple Heart for his sacrifice and service.
Survivors include his beloved wife,
Sherry Christopher; daughter and son-
in-law, Courtney and Derek Cook; two
grandchildren, Chloe Mae and Cade
Michael, all of Woodstock, Ga. Sisters
include the late Eva Carson of Watkins
ville, Frances Jackson and Dallas White,
both of Athens, and a brother, Jesse
Christopher, Watkinsville.
Funeral services were held Mon
day, June 4, at Smith’s Funeral Home
Chapel.

Bradford Gilley
Bradford Albert Gilley, 68, passed
away Tuesday June 5,2018.
Mr. Gilley was preceded in death
by his parents, Grady and Sybil Brown
Gilley; and his sister, Brenda Shuler. Mr.
Gilley attended Madison County High
School and Athens Technical School. He
was a native of Carroll County, Ga., and
was retired from Heaven’s Best Carpet
Cleaning.
Survivors include his wife of 40
years, Barbara McLeroy Gilley; chil
dren, Shawn Heath Gilley, Shannon
Dixon, Lorah Patman, and Melissa
Gilley; brother, Brady Gilley; sisters,
Faye Seagraves, and Kaye Suddeth; six
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday
June 9, in the Smith Memory Chapel.
Burial was at the Davis Family Cem
etery.

Betty Jean Gordon
COMMERCE - Betty Jean Gordon,
92, died Thursday, June 7,2018, at Pied
mont Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Gordon was bom in Commerce,
the daughter of the late Thomas Olin
and Maude Segars Varner. She was a
member of New Salem United Method
ist Church and was a homemaker. Mrs.
Gordon was preceded in death by her
husband, William Monroe Gordon; and
daughter, Lynnette Gordon.
Survivors include sons and daugh-
ters-in-law, Danny and Beth Gordon,
Mike and Peggy Gordon, Rev. Eddie
Gordon, Dennis Gordon and Kent Gor
don, all of Commerce; sister, Margarite
Herbert, Commerce; 12 grandchildren;
and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday,
June 10, at the chapel of Little-Ward
Funeral Home with the Revs. Doug
Duncan and Eddie Gordon officiating.
Interment was in New Salem United
Methodist Church Cemetery.

Paul Henley
DANIELSVILLE Paul M. Henley,
Jr., 93, was welcomed home on May 31,
2018, by his late wife, Juanita Buchanan
Henley and his parents, Paul M. Henley,
Sr. and Stella Brown Henley.
Paul was bom July 31, 1924, in
his parents’ home in the Poca Com
munity where he
was raised. He
graduated from
Madison County
High School and
joined the Navy during World War II
where he saw action in Normandy, Iwo
Jima and Okinawa aboard the U.S.S.
Bates. Paul and “Sunshine” moved to
the Birmingham, Ala. area where Paul
worked for BASF Wyandotte Corp until
his retirement when they then returned to
build on the home place on Stella Henley
Rd. in Poca.
Survivors include a son, Paul M.
Henley, HI (Amelia); Angie Henley; and
many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday,
June 9, at Lord & Stephens, Daniels
ville. Burial was at Providence Baptist
Church, Ila, Ga.

He was a member of Landmark Bap
tist Church in Loganville. Ricky was a
carpenter and he loved fishing and the
outdoors.

daughter of the
late Walter Jones
Massey, Jr. and
Janette Venable
Massey. She
was a lifelong
member of Bethany United Methodist
Church, and was a retired administra
tive assistant with the Jefferson City
School System after 30 years of service.
Mrs. Langford was preceded in death by
twin daughters, Sharon and Karen Den
nis; brother-in-law, John Kesler; and a
nephew, Joseph Clinton Hensley.
Survivors include her husband, Bill
Langford, Jefferson; three sons, Louis
Dennis, Jefferson, Jeffrey Lynn Lang
ford and his wife Vanessa, Suwanee, and
Walter Lee Langford, Commerce; three
sisters, Lynda Kesler, Jefferson, Sara
Hensley, Commerce, and Barbara Cain
and her husband Billy, Jefferson; one
brother, Joe Massey and his wife Wanda,
Jefferson; three grandchildren, Jessica
Richardson, Jefferson, Jenni Espina, Jef
ferson, and Micah Langford, Suwanee;
one great-grandchild, Lola Faye Rich
ardson; and a number of nieces and
nephews.
Mama Sue as she was called by so
many that loved her was a beautiful, trea
sured, and generous spirit that brought
laughter and joy to all. Her countenance
and grace in all circumstances were a
testament to her character, her Christian
faith, and her contagious charisma.
Funeral services will be held at 3
p.m. Thursday, June 14, from the Chapel
of Evans Funeral Home with Stacey
Alldredge, Jeffrey Lynn Langford and
Joe Massey officiating with burial to
follow in the Bethany United Methodist
Church Cemetery. Gentlemen honored
as pallbearers are Lee Richardson, Ron
nie Espina, Walt Massey, Wes Massey,
Cody Cain, Carter Cain and Jason Hens
ley. The family will receive friends at
the funeral home Wednesday, June 13,

Betty Sue Massey
Edward left home at a young age to
be a Merchant Marine that gave him
the opportunity to travel the world and
study other cultures, which gave him an
education beyond what could be learned
in a classroom. After retiring from Clem-
son University where he was a roofer,
his greatest joy was being able to help
friends, of which he had many, when
possible. Edward found great joy in
gospel singings as recreation.
Survivors include a son, David Lee
Lowery, Colbert; daughter-in-law, Shir
ley Lowery; brother, Joe Lowery and
his wife Dr. Evelyn Schwab, West Palm
Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Virginia Hig
gins, Kerrville, Texas, Sharon Nunnery
and her husband Michael, West Union,
S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2
p.m. on Saturday, June 23, at Zebulon
Baptist Church, 1083 W. Currahee St.,
Toccoa, GA 30577.

Violette Lyle
AUBURN - Violette Olene Elliott
Lyle, 89, died Thursday, June 7,2018.
Mrs. Lyle was bom on September
28, 1928, the daughter of the late J.O.
Elliott and Thelma Allen Elliott. She
was a graduate of Winder High School
in 1944 and a lifelong member of Har
mony Grove United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Lyle was preceded in death by
her husband of 48 years, John David,
Sr.; daughter, Jody Lyle; and grandson,
David Austin Durden.
She served in the Auburn, Ga. Post
Office for 38 years, 13 of those as Post
master. She also devoted much of her
life to church and community service.
She was a member of the Barrow Coun
ty Historical Society, Welfare Board and
member of The Order of The Eastern
Star for 64 years. She served Har
mony Grove as pianist, organist, Sunday
School Teacher, choir member and Pres
ident of the United Methodist Women.
For these and many other activities, she
was presented with the Community Pil
lar Award for the City of Auburn, 2017.
Though she contributed greatly to her
community, her greatest legacy lies in the
hearts and minds of her children.

‘Dick’ Manning Jr.
WINDER - Richard John ‘Dick’
Manning, Jr. passed away peacefully on
June 9,2018, at age 87.
He was bom on April 3, 1931, in
Quincy, Mass., the son of the late Ger
trude and Richard Manning. Richard
had a lifelong love for golf and enjoyed
much press and success throughout the
northeast as a highly-talented and suc
cessful young amateur. In his amateur
career, he recorded eight holes in one.
He graduated from Boston College with
a BA in Science. At Boston College, he
starred on the varsity golf team. Rich
ard had a long and successful career
at Konica-Minolta as a regional sales
man and oversaw a large team. He was
preceded in death by his second wife,
Donna Manning.
Survivors include his first wife, Betty
Manning; his widow, Maxine Manning;
sister, Ann Kashynski; son, Richard
Manning III; and his grandson, Caden
Manning.
There will be a private funeral with
family members and close friends.

Mr. Mayfield
was bom in Cum-
ming, Ga., the son

Henry Mayfield

Bryant Mayfield.
Mr. Mayfield was
of the Holiness
denomination and
ran 5K races every month. He enjoyed
gospel music, often singing in nurs
ing homes. He loved to exercise and
was employed by Bell’s Grocery Store,
where he worked in the produce depart
ment. Mr. Mayfield was also a member
of the Army National Guard.
Survivors include his wife of 54
years, Evelyn Mayfield, Pendergrass;
son, Larry Cline and his wife Linda,
Pendergrass; daughter, Evelyn Lawana
Shook and her husband James, Pend
ergrass; son, William Glenn Mayfield,
Gainesville; brother, Cline Mayfield,

Laurence Morgan
Laurence Kenneth Morgan, 71, died
on Wednesday, May 30,2018.
Formerly of Louisville, Ky., Mr. Mor
gan was a graduate of the University of
Louisville and earned a master’s degree
at Georgia State University. He was a
Mensa member who loved puns, pho
tography, traveling, Celtic music, and
University of Kentucky basketball. He
retired from the Social Security Admin
istration after more than 30 years of
service. He was preceded in death by
his parents; and his beloved sister, Becky.
Survivors include his wife, Debbie
Morgan; their blended family, Arlyn
(Allison) Morgan, Jennifer (Bhrett) Kis-

and family.
He was bom
on March 20,
1942, in York,
Pa., the son of the
late Harold and
Geraldine (Wag
ner) Rudisill, Sr.
Survivors include his wife of 57
years, Patricia Ann; children, Wendy
(Larry) McElhannon, Kevin (Cindi)
Rudisill, and Angela (Matthew) Riven-
bark; grandchildren, Jackie (Greg)
Meadows, Stephanie (Justin) Saunders,
Billy (Brittany) Rivenbark, Joshua
Rudisill, Zachary Rudisill, and James
(Mary) McElhannon; sisters, Carolyn
Danner and Linda (Lynn) Firestone;
brother, Gary (Nancy) Rudisill; seven
great-grandchildren; several nieces and

Harold graduated from York High in
1959 and married his high school sweet
heart on September 17, 1960. He went
into the HVAC apprenticeship program
at York BorgAVamer, where he worked
his way to regional service manager. He
retired from there in 2004 after 44 years.
He grew up in York, Pa. and then
moved his family to Georgia in 1975.
From there he moved to Mt. Pleasant,
N.C., where he lived with his wife for
over 30 years. In 2014, he and his wife
moved back to Georgia.
He was baptized as one of Jehovah’s
Witnesses on March 21, 1971. Serving
Jehovah became his greatest passion.
He loved being at the meetings with
the friends and he always had a warm,
friendly smile for everyone. He loved
spending time in the door-to-door min
istry sharing his hope of everlasting life
in paradise. Shortly before he passed, a
group of friends was visiting Harold, a
brother asked him if there was anything
specific Harold would like him to pray
for. Harold replied “Pray for all those
who want to be in the ministry, to be
able to get back out in the ministry.”
He enjoyed working with the RBC for
many years. He was also instrumental
in helping build the Assembly Hall of
Jehovah’s Witnesses in Salisbury, N.C.,
handling the mechanical maintenance
for several years after.
He thoroughly enjoyed spending
time with his family and especially
looked forward to the yearly turkey fry.
Some of his hobbies included golf
ing and woodworking. He had an ear
for music and was an accomplished
accordion player from a young age. He
enjoyed playing it for friends and family.
He will be remembered as a devoted
husband, father and friend and will be
deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at
the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Wit
nesses in Winder, Ga. on June 30, 2018,
at 2 p.m. Vernon Linker will officiate.

gia) as Hog Division Manager after
30 years of service. After retiring, he
worked as a consultant, helping to devel
op the hog industry in Jamaica.
Fred enjoyed woodworking and gar
dening in his spare time. He was a mem
ber of Jefferson First United Methodist
Church in Jefferson, Ga. for 40 years.

Douglas Edward Shumake.

Lin Logan.

Cameron Smith
Cameron Alexander Smith was bom
May 11,2000, the
son of Michael
and Jamie Smith.

Cameron
Smith was an
18-year-old young
man currently attending Georgia Cyber
Academy and was going to return to
Madison County High School in the fall
so that he could participate in gradua
tion ceremonies with his classmates and
friends. Cameron was a Christian that
just simply enjoyed life. His hobbies
included hunting, fishing, and playing
with his nieces. He was a member at
Sonlight Baptist Church in Colbert.
Cameron was a selfless young man
that was always willing to help anyone.
Cameron died helping someone and his
family could not be prouder.
Survivors in addition to his parents
include three siblings, Ashley Smith,
Leah Smith, and Tyler Smith; paternal
grandparents, Howard and Janet Bag-
well; one sister-in-law, Torie Smith; two
nieces, Ryleigh and Oaklyn; and one
nephew on the way, Alexander Craig
Smith.
Funeral services were held Sunday,
June 10, at the Batts & Bridges Funeral
Home Chapel, Athens. Burial was in the
Sonlight Baptist Church Cemetery.

held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, from
the Woodbine Cemetery with the Rev.
Chad Dale officiating. The family will

Don Holliday
WINDER - Don Holliday, 68,
passed away Sunday, June 10,2018.
He was a member of The Statham
United Methodist Church. Don was a
1968 graduate of Winder-Barrow High
School and was a home builder. He was
the owner of St. Ives Contractors and
developed The St. Ives Estate in Winder.
He served his community most of his
life, 25 years as the Statham Fire Chief,
chairman of the airport authority and as
chairman of the Barrow County Board
of Commissioners. Don loved to fly and
was a private pilot.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, Calvin Donald and Irma Rodg
ers Holliday.
Survivors include his wife, Roxana
Holliday, Winder; two sons, Landry
Holliday, Winder, and Kelly Holliday
(Amanda Cape), Virginia; brother, Chet
Holliday, Statham; sister, Sheila Brown,
Statham; and four grandchildren, Griffin,
Olivia, Reeves and AnnaLeigh Holliday.
A memorial service will be held at 4
p.m. Thursday, June 14, in the chapel of
Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg
Millwood officiating. The family will
receive friends at the funeral home two
hours prior to the service.

Annie Shubert
COMMERCE - Annie Bert Shu
bert, 98, died Monday, June 11, 2018, at
Northridge Medical Center.
Mrs. Shubert was bom in Homer, the
daughter of the late Mack Gipson. She
was a member of Grove Level Baptist
Church and was retired from Blue Bell.
Mrs. Shubert was preceded in death by
her husband, Dillard L. Shubert.
Survivors include sons, Larry Shu
bert, Commerce, and Clyde Shubert,
Chickasha, Okla.; four grandchildren;
eleven great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m.

Miriam Wood
AUBURN - Miriam Wood, 87,
passed away Thursday, June 7,2018.
She was preceded in death by her par
ents, Rainey and Daisy Wood; brothers,
Buster Wood, Donald Wood and G.E.
Wood; and son, Gordon Wood; nephew,
Johnny Wood and niece, Donna Wood.
Miriam retired from Dacula Ele
mentary. She was an influential part of
Auburn, and instrumental in spearhead
ing the Auburn Library where to this day
it is dedicated in her honor. Miriam also
helped start the Auburn Museum. She
was a member of the Barrow County
Historical Society and one of the last
members of the original Auburn Town
ship.
Survivors include her daughter,
Mickey (Phillip) Blackstock; grandsons,
Dm (Brittany) Blackstock and Ronald
(fiance Tania Aguirre) Blackstock; great
grandchildren, Madisyn Blackstock, Tif-
fani Blackstock, and Miriam Blackstock;
nieces and nephews, Zita and Jimmy
Shed, Don Wood, Cheryl Wood, Van
Wood, Keith Wood, Victor Wood, and
Maisy Wood; cousins, Gail and Steve
Sinno.
