BOYS’ TEAM
CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Marcus Berninger, So.
Jefferson, No. 1 singles
Berninger went 18-0 this season (with
15 wins in singles play and three in dou
bles action), helping to lead Jefferson to its
first-ever Final Four appearance. Berninger
was named the Region 8-AAAA Player of
the Year.
CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Eli Hagan, Jr.
Apalachee, No. 1 singles
FHagan went 18-0 at No. 1 singles for
the Wildcats and owns a 56-1 career
record in three seasons. Fie was the
Region 8-AAAAAA Player of the Year and
a first-team all-region singles selection
for 8-AAAAAA. Hagan only dropped two
games all season in eight region matches,
winning six by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

Davis Hayes, Sr., and
and Pierson Hill, Jr.
Apalachee, No. 1 doubles
Hayes and Hill went 8-4 as a doubles
tandem this past spring. Both were sec
ond-team all-region selections 8-AAAAAA.
Hayes ranks first for Apalachee in career
doubles wins and sits fifth on the schools
all-time win list. He is the only Wildcat ten
nis player to play in four state tournaments.
Gabe Martin, Sr.
Banks Co., No. 1 singles
Martin went 12-4 on the year, including
wins in the region finals and first round of
the state tournament. He was a first-team
all-region selection for 8-AA.
Cade Ridley, Sr.
Commerce, No. 2 singles
Ridley went undefeated in the biggest
matches of the year, going 4-0 in area
matches, 2-0 in the area tournament and
2-0 in the state tournament.
Moses Mullis, So., and
Jakes Frates, Fr.
Commerce, No. 1 doubles
Mullis and Frates went 4-0 in area play,
2-0 at the area tournament and 1-1 in the

Ashton Sosebee, So.
East Jackson, No. 1 singles
Sosebee went 9-9 on the year, playing
at No. 1 singles in every match this season
as the Eagles qualified for the state tour
nament for the first time in school history.
Gavyn Nesmith, Sr.
East Jackson,
No. 3 singles/No. 1 doubles
Nesmith went a combined 9-8 between
singles and doubles play. He went 2-0
at the region tournament as the Eagles
qualified for state.
Garrett Lounder, Sr.
East Jackson,
No. 1 and 2 doubles
Lounder went 9-7 in doubles action,
playing with four different partners this
year.
Kade Graves, Fr.
Jackson Co., No. 1 singles
The freshman burst on to the scene
with a 17-1 record playing at line one
singles for the Region 8-AAA champi
on Panthers. Graves went undefeated in
8-AAA play and was the Region 8-AAA
Boys Player of the Year.
Kyle Graves, Jr.
Jackson Co., No. 2 singles
Graves went a career-best 15-3 this
spring and went undefeated in region play.
He was a first-team all-region selection
for 8-AAA.
Nicholas Bergeron, So.
Jackson Co., No. 3 singles
Bergeron went 16-2 with an unbeaten
mark in region play. He has a 34-2 career
record in two seasons of high school ten
nis. Bergeron was a first-team all-region
selection for 8-AAA.
Hayden Dutton, Sr., and
Brendon Mitchell, Sr.
Jackson Co., No. 2 doubles
Dutton and Mitchell went 11-4 and
went unbeaten against region opponents.
They were first-team all-region selections
for 8-AAA.
Caden Mantooth, Sr.
Jefferson, No. 2 singles
Mantooth went 14-7 this season in
mostly singles action. He was a sec
ond-team all-region selection for 8-AAAA.
Del Jakins, Sr., and
Cooper Kework, Jr.
Jefferson, No. 2 doubles
This Dragon tandem with 13-2 on the
year and were all-region honorable men
tions for 8-AAAA.
Caleb Wells, Jr.,
Blake Lathrop, Sr., No. 1 dou
bles
Wells and Lathrop finished 9-4 on the
year as a doubles team and earned sec
ond-team all-region honors for 8-AAAA.
Col Doster, Sr.
Madison Co., No. 1 and 2
singles
Doster went 9-5 on the season. He
was an all-region honorable mention for
8-AAAA.
Anthony Lyvers, Sr., and
Jacob Dixon, Jr.
Madison Co., No. 1 doubles
Lyvers and Dixon went 10-5, leading
Madison County in victories.
Gable Peacock, Sr.
Winder-Barrow, No. 1 singles
Peacock went 9-7 this spring, lead
ing Winder-Barrow in victories. He was a
first-team all-region selection for Region
8-AAAAAA.
Thomas Hall, Sr., and
Matt Whiddon, Sr.
Winder-Barrow, No. 2 doubles
Hall and Whiddon went 5-2 as a duo
and earned second-team all-region honors
for 8-AAAAAA.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Dawson Bryan, Jefferson
In his first season on the job, Bryan led
Jefferson to the program's first-ever Final
Four appearance. The season highlights
included finishing first in 8-AAAA during
the regular season with a 5-0 record and
a runner-up finish in the 8-AAAA tourna
ment.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Chloe Smith, Fr.
Banks Co., No. 1 singles
The freshman went 15-5 in the top sin
gles spot for Banks County and earned first-
team all-region honors for 8-AA.

Lauren Collins, Sr.
Banks Co., No. 2 doubles
Morris and Collins went 12-2 as a tan
dem and earned first-team all-region honors
for 8-AA.

Commerce, No. 1 doubles
Hill and Smith went 4-0 in area regular
season matches, 2-0 at the area tournament
and 1-0 at the state tournament.
Bree Ligon, So., and
Conner Nash, Jr.
Commerce
Ligon and Nash went 4-0 against
area opponents in the regular season,
2-0 in the area tournament and 1-0 in
the state tournament.
Sydney Mathis, Sr.
East Jackson, No. 1 singles
GIRLS’ TEAM
Mathis went 7-8 on the year playing in
the top spot for East Jackson. She went
5-5 against region opponents. Mathis
was a first-team all-region selection for
8-AAA.
Serina Bergeron, Jr.
Jackson Co., No. 1 singles
Bergeron went 8-11 on the season
but recorded a 7-3 mark in the Region
8-AAA play. She was a first-team all-re
gion selection for 8-AAA.
Aspen Reeves, Sr.
Jackson Co., No. 2 singles
Reeves finished with a 10-9 record,
going 7-2 against region opponents. She
was a second-team all-region selection
for 8-AAA.
Sarah Moore, So.
Jefferson, No. 1 singles
Moore was an all-region honorable
mention selection for 8-AAAA.
Rachel Brooks, So.
Madison Co., No. 3 singles
Brooks went 12-5 and was a sec
ond-team all-region selection for 8-AAAA.
Katie Colquitt, Jr., and
Bree Strickland, Jr.
Madison Co., No. 1 doubles
Colquitt and Strickland went 11-7 as a
doubles team and were all-region honor
able mentions for 8-AAAA.
Savannah Butler, Jr., and
Hayley Daniels, Fr.,
Madison Co.
The duo went 11-3 and was an all-re
gion honorable mention selection for
8-AAAA.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Jim McKinney, Banks Co.
McKinney led the Leopards to a Region
8-AA title and Elite Eight appearance.
Baseball omission: Jackson County's Tanner Crump was left off last week's all-area baseball team. Crump hit .344 for the Panthers this season with two home runs and 27 RBIs.

ons’ largest team ever is off
to one of its best starts.
The recreation swimming
team opened its sched
ule with a first-place finish
among eight teams at the
North Division Splash meet
in Habersham County.
“Our team this year is the
largest one ever,” said coach
Tess Nunnally, who is assist
ed this year by C.J. Guzman
and Haley Bartoletta. “ ...
We are once again looking to
be league Champions, district
champions, and hopefully top
in the state.”
Jefferson has returned mul
tiple state champions, state
finalists and record holders
this year and dominated its
season opening meet. Both
the girls’ and boys’ teams
took the top sports in their
respective competitions as
the program recorded an
overall first-place finish. The
meet included 15 first-place
finishes, while 14 swimmers
accounted for 33 all-star
times.
Ansley Nunnally broke
three team 10U girls’ records
with wins 50-yard freestyle,
100-yard individual medley
and 25-yard butterfly (see
results below for times), and
Joshua Joransen broke the
18U boys’ team record in
the 100-yard freestyle with a
time of 54.02.
“This is an awesome start
to our season and shows the
talent we have among our
swimmers here in Jefferson,”
Nunnally said.
First-place finishers

50-yard freestyle (39.58),
25-yard freestyle (19.15) and
25-yard backstroke.
•Ansley Nunnally 10U
girls — 50-yard freestyle
(28.16), 100-yard individu
al medley (1:13.39), 25-yard

25-yard butterfly (14.51).
•Gertie Nazaroff 12U
girls — 50-yard breaststroke
(37.31).
•6U freestyle relay

•8U girls medley relay

The Jefferson Recreation
Department track and field
team recently concluded its
season with three athletes
winning state gold.
Competing in the Georgia
Recreation and Parks Asso
ciation B/C state track and
field championships, 8-year-
old William Malueg won state
championships in the boys
8U 400 and 800 meter races
while Kaitlyn Herring won
the 10U girls 1,600-meter
state championship.
Malueg set the Class B/C
record in the 800 meters and
narrowly missed setting a new
state mark in the 400 meters.
Brock Brush took sec
ond in the 12U boys’ Class
B/C 1,600 meters, bettering
a state-record time that had
stood since 1996. He was only
.84 of a second off the pace of
the first-place finisher.
Gabby Lee finished as state
runner-up in the 10U girls’
1,600 meters.
Other top-seven finishes at
state were:
•Rihanna Wood 10U girls
— fifth place, 100 meters;
sixth place, 200 meters.
•Isabell Dart 8U girls —
fourth place, 800 meters.
