SAVINGS SHARED
WITH RETIREE
Selena Blankenship, left, human resourc
es director for the Jackson County
School System, presented Jackson
County Comprehensive High School’s
retiring cafeteria manager Debra Ash
with a “really big check” at the May 14
meeting of the Jackson County Board of
Education. Unlike certified teachers, clas
sified personnel cannot roll over unused
sick time into their retirement, but policy
enacted in the 2016-17 school year allows
eligible classified employees with at least
15 consecutive years of service and 20 to
120 days of unused sick leave to receive
payouts of $500 to $6,750. Funds come
from the savings realized by the school
system’s shared benefit plan, which pro
vides an incentive for classified staff to
secure health insurance outside the sys
tem through their spouse, parent or other
options, like Medicare. Ash, who worked
in food service at JCCHS, West Jackson
Primary and West Jackson Middle
schools during her career, had accumu
lated more than four months of sick days
before she retired this year.
