"After the early morning

Upon arriving at the position.
Sergeant Smith discovered that
there were mortars and 50 cal

All Jackson County
BOEs cut tax rate
Sen. Wilkinson
named to committees
All three school systems in Jackson
County have officially cut their tax rates
this year.
The Jefferson City School System
recently cut its tax rate to 15.157 mills,
down from 15.609 mills last year. The
system’s bond millage stayed the same at
3.845 mills.
Jefferson has added 19 new positions
this year due to growth, system officials
said. The system gave raises this year to
both certified and non-certified staff. Its
budget for FY2018-2019 is $30.95 million
and the budget anticipates using around $1
million from reserves.
Also, the Jackson County School System
recently cut its millage rate to 18.858
mills, down from 19.131 mills. The bond
millage rate is staying the same at 2.7
mills.
“We think this is very fair,” said JCSS
superintendent April Howard, noting that
the system’s budget for FY2018-2019 is
“breakeven.”
Howard said the system has added 400
new students so far this year. That sys
tem’s budget for the year is $74.5 million.
The City of Commerce School System
also cut its millage rate to 18.694 mills,
down from 19.139 mills. Commerce’s
FY2018-2019 budget was set at $15.4
million.
Sen. John Wilkinson (R-Toccoa)
was recently appointed by Lt. Gov
ernor Casey Cagle to serve on the
Senate Study Committee on Continu
al Audit Exceptions on Local School
Systems and the Senate Study Com
mittee on Evaluating the School Year
Calendar of Georgia Public Schools.
“I am honored to serve on these
study committees and look forward
to carefully considering a variety
of topics that impact public schools
around our state,” said Sen. Wilkin
son. “For years, our state has left the
school calendar up to the discretion of
the local school systems. The school
calendar study committee has been
tasked with looking into several fac
tors surrounding school start times,
including the effect on tourism and
hospitality industries and whether the
amount of breaks in a school year
effect performance and learning. It’s
also important that we look at the
audit irregularities reported in school
budgets and determine if legislative
solutions are needed to correct this
problem. While I know that many
people have differing opinions on
these topics, it’s important to consider
all sides and determine what is in the
best interest of our students.”
The Senate Study Committee on
Continual Audit Exceptions on Local
School Systems was created by Sen
ate Resolution 1064 during the 2018
Legislative Session. The purpose of
the study committee is to determine
what legislation might be necessary to
obtain compliance from local school
systems that do not meet state audit
expectations.
The Senate Study Committee on
Evaluating the School Year Calendar
of Georgia Public Schools was creat
ed by the passage of Senate Resolu
tion 1068 during the 2018 Legislative
Session. The committee will review
the effect of varied school start dates
on the travel and hospitality indus
tries and employment opportunities
for students.
