The Jefferson softball
team picked up its biggest
win of the season Friday,
defeating Madison County
in extra innings. The win
came two days after the
Dragons lost to the Red
Raiders in five innings.
The victory helps Jeffer
son maintain fourth place
in the Region 8-AAAA
standings heading into
Tuesday’s game at home
against East Hall. The
Dragons aren’t yet out of
contention for the regu
lar-season championship
with games against mad-
ison County, Flowery
Branch and North Oconee
still on the schedule.
JEFFERSON 8,
MADISON COUNTY 7
Rallies in the seventh
inning and eighth inning
lifted Jefferson over re
gion rival Madison Coun
ty on Friday (Sept. 17).
Jefferson (8-8, 4-5 Re
gion 8-AAAA) was down
to its last out in the sev
enth inning and trailing
5-3 when Taylor Spivey
took the plate with no one
on base. She singled on a
line drive to right held to
fire up the offense. Maleia
Truelove followed with a
walk and Audrey Burton
singled up the middle to
load the bases.
Anslee Pittman drove
in two runs when her
hard ground ball was mis-
helded by the Red Raid
er defense. Truelove and
pinch-runner Maddyx
Thornton reached home
plate to tie the game at
5-5.
Madison County re
gained the lead in the top
of the eighth inning via a
lead-off walk, RBI triple
and a sacrifice ground
ball. Jefferson trailed 7-5
going into the bottom of
the eighth inning.
The Dragons were down
to their last out once again
when Truelove came to
the plate. However, this
time Jefferson had Elbe
Kinlaw and Avery Hays
standing on first and sec
ond base. Truelove hit
a fly ball to deep center
field, bringing both run
ners home to tie the game
7-7. Truelove hurried
home to score the winning
run when Burton hit an
other hard grounder up the
middle. Jefferson defeated
the Red Raiders 8-7.
Jefferson led for most of
the game after a big first
inning. Madison Coun
ty took an early 2-0 lead,
but the Dragons fired back
with three runs in the bot
tom half of the inning.
Truelove batted into a
fielder’s choice to bring
Kinlaw home, cutting the
score to 2-1. Burton tied
the game at 2-2 with a
single to right field which
brought Spivey home.
Savannah Smith walked
with bases loaded to give
the Dragons a 3-2 advan
tage.
Madison County scored
three runs in the fifth in
ning to gain a 5-3 lead pri
or to Jefferson’s rally in
the seventh inning.
MADISON COUNTY
10, JEFFERSON 2
Jefferson fell to 3-5 in
Region 8-AAAA play
when it lost to Madison
County on Wednesday
(Sept. 15).
The Dragons scored the
first run of the game via
a double by Maleia True-
love which brought Elbe
Kinlaw home from second
base. Jefferson led 1-0, but
lost the lead when Madi
son County scored three
runs off a pair of doubles
in the bottom of the third
inning.
Jefferson cut the lead to
3-2 in the top of the fourth
inning when Audrey Bur
ton scored on an error at
third base when the Red
Raiders tried to catch the
Dragons stealing bases.
Jefferson had just one out
when Burton scored, but
Madison County caught
Anslee Pittman at third
base and struck out Emma
Kate Sorrells to lessen the
damage.
Madison County made
Jefferson pay for not add
ing more runs when it had
the chance. The Red Raid
ers extended their lead to
5-2 with a base-clearing
triple in the bottom of the
fourth inning, and they
scored five more runs in
the bottom of the fifth in
ning to beat Jefferson 10-2.

Volleyball continued from IB
The Wildcats led for the first and only
time of the night during the second set.
They claimed a 1-0 lead off the first serve,
but it didn’t last. Jackson County imme
diately jumped ahead 2-1. The game re
mained close with Apalachee constantly
tying the game until the set was knotted at
5-5. The Panthers dominated the rest of the
set, outscoring the Wildcats 20-8 to claim
a 25-13 victory.
Jackson County didn’t let up in the third
set, jumping out to a 12-0 lead before an
error gave Apalachee a point. That mistake
did little to flip the momentum as the Pan
thers went n to win 25-4.
“We had some really good matches with
them last year,” Fowler said. “Coach Al
fonso, year after year, does a great job. We
knew coming in that we had to play really
good volleyball if we wanted to walk out
of here tonight with a win. To do it in three
sets and sweep them was great.”
“The big thing for us is confidence.
When we play with confidence, we exe
cute and the girls have fun. The end result
is really good. I thought last Wednesday
we played a little too tight at times and
just didn’t have that confidence. So we’ve
really been preaching since the Loganville
game, have confidence in our ability and
confidence in what we’re going to do. If
we keep that confidence, I think we’re the
most dangerous team.”
Jackson County continues its Region
8-AAAAA schedule Thursday (Sept. 23)
at home against Greenbrier (19-1, 1-0 Re
gion 8-AAAAA). The Wolfpack are the
deafening region champions and they ad
vanced to the state quarterfinals last sea
son.
Cross country continued from IB
Powell ran the course in a 20:51.25.
Lillian Parker (24th - 22:35.20) was the
only other Dragons to finish in the top
25 in the girls’ race. Kate James (29th
- 22:38.95), Isabel Vanderpool (31st -
22:52.50), Emily Bird (33rd - 23:01.76),
Lauren Hailey (41st — 23:29.23) and Mia
Hilley (55th - 24:22.46) all contributed
to Jefferson’s second-place finish. The
squad scored 126 points overall, beating
Loganville by two points, but were 56
points shy of Norcross High School.
JACKSON COUNTY
GIRLS FINISH SIXTH
Eric O’Brien’s (21:58.96) 20th place
finish led the Jackson County girls cross
country team to a sixth-place finish
overall. Anna Warren (35th - 23:07.93),
Morgan Eldridge (43rd - 23:44.99)
and Kamryn Shaw-Foreman (50th -
23:54.08) rounded out the top 50.
Silas Gillespie (71st - 19:47.08) and
Blake Martin (79th - 20:04.19) were
Jackson County’s highest finishers in
the boys’ race. Jackson County’s boys’
cross country team finished 20th over
all.
NEXT WEEK
East Jackson, Jackson County and
Jefferson are all on course together next
week at the North Oconee Invitation
al, on-campus at North Oconee High
School. The varsity boys race at 8 a.m.
and the girls follow at 8:30 a.m.
Jefferson continued from IB
up. We played the best we had all season
when we got that one point.”
Jefferson (13-8, 3-1 Region 8-AAAA)
dropped its first set against North Oconee
26-26. The set featured multiple lead
changes, but Jefferson couldn’t find the
points at the end to prolonged or ulti
mately take the lead. The Dragons re
sponded in the second set by squashing
the Titans 25-18. Burrage capped that
game with a hard spike behind North
Oconee’s front line.
“We’ve been working really hard to
make sure she’s playing within her lane,”
said head coach Brittani Lawrence. “It’s
great to have such a tab, tremendous
young lady, especially in that middle po
sition in our offense and in our defense.
“We’ve been working really hard to
make sure our setter-hitter connection
has been fine-tuned and, which is ex
actly what you saw tonight. Just a pure
connection between the two girls, and
between the whole team in coverage as
web.”
Jefferson opened the evening with
a 2-0 win over East Hall. The Dragons
continue region 8-AAAA play on Tues
day (Sept. 21) at home against Chestatee
and Cedar Shoals.
