That will do
“ That will do,” is a phrase of modern
invention. The ancients knew of tin
such expression, or the Egyptions would |
never have raised the pyramids, nor tie 1
Greeks ami Roman* display oil that love I
of the beautiful which led them to im-J
part u pottio firnce i veil to the meanest
utentils for household use, as the re |
mains of P unpeii fully testify. “That
will do,” is the excuse of mediocrity,
unahle to soar to better tilings. “Thai
wiil do,” is the self.dispensaiinn given
by the lazy Oainter, who glosses over
the want of anntomicnl correctness In
a showy coloring. “ l’hat will do,” t>
tin- besetting sin of architects who lav
their short comings to iho want of a fa
vorable site or nit Italian climate. -
“Thai ill do,” is the precept held in
veneration by most servants. “Thai
w ill do,” makes your sloven and yom
slattern. A man who adopts thin inctm
with regard to dress tint s imt mind be
ing seen with a dirty shirt, and a beartl
of two days’ growth—while the saint
fatal saving allows a woman to go about
the house with curl papers, und sop
*!;• I. “That will do,” applied to house,
hoiti matters, is equally hut), and mote
annoying to friends than when applieu
to dress. You may expect ill-cooked
dinners in any house where die head
adopt this ma.xi'ii —to say nothing of
shabby carpets, faded paint, dirty inns
jin curtains, Arc. “That will do,” lias
conjured up a host of inetlicinni tench
era, and a still larger proponimi ol ini
perfect scholars. “Thul will do,” ha
sunk many a ship—caused the ilowniu |
ot scaffolding holding hundreds of l.u
mar beings—occasions at least Im!t th
fires I hat take place, and is at the button
of most railway disasters. “ 1 hut will
do,” is the enemy to all excellence,
and would sap tlm couso c oe ot tin
most virtuous man aide, il In - hem ken
ed to ita dictat’ s. The only persons m
whom wo reconmiend it are drunkards,
gamblers, and spendthrifts, w*ho may
verv properly exclaim—“ I'iiat w ill do!
Alt should bear in mind that nothing
will “do” but the very hi st in point ol
excellence.
Engaging Manners —There are a
thousand prelly engaging blilu ways
whicli every person may put on without
the risk of being deemed either idfected
or foppish. The sweet smile, the quiet,
cordial bow, ilm earnest movement in
addressing a friend, or more especially
a stranger, whom one may reoom j
mend to our good regards, the inquir
ing glance, the graceful attentions
which are captivating when united with
self-possession, there “ill ensure us
the good regards of even a churl. A
bove all there is a certain softness o|
manner which should be cultivated, j
and w hich, it. either man or woman. |
Adds a charm that almost entirely coin- j
pensat os for lackt brauty. I lie voice
may be modulated so to intonate, that t
it will speak directly tothe heart, and!
front that elicit ail answer; and polite- j
ness may bn made an essential to our
nature. Neither is time thrown away
in attending to those “ho engage in
weighing matters.
The man who sets out in life withou’
aiiv system or rule to be guided by in I
bis intercourse with men in business
transactions, cannot expect to nuquir.
wlmt he anticipates, if it is wealth 01
fame.
Is it not a matter for surprise, that
while young Indies ore so sedulously
tauglii all the accompli#,nncnls that a
husband disregards, they are never
taught the great one he would prist’ ?
They ate taught lo be exhibit * jt abroad;
whereas he wants a companion at home.
Sincerity is to speak its w e think, to
do as wp pretend and proless, lo pet (brut
and makegood bat we promise, and
leutiy to he what we would seem and
appear to bo. It is an excellent instru
ment for the speedy despatch of busi.
ness, tv creating confidence in those
we have to deal with, and saving the la
bor of many inquiries.
The ancient* were of opinion that
Echo was a maiden, who hod pined
away for love, till nothing but her
voice was left.

W r OULD call the attention f the public to
a number of certificates published in va
rious papeis in the State of cases of Fistula
cured by him, lii tiie treatment of Fistula,
recourse is generally had to the knife, which is
always painful and often hazardous and very
frequently unsucersfui.
•More than one tiaif of the cases that hove
come under his care of lute, hud been subjected
to the knife without experiencing the least ben
efit, but rather made worse. They were per
fectly cured by Dr. M. without tiie use ot the
kmte, or any such operation, without the least
danger, and with but little or no pain. In most
cases the treatin'nt do.s not prevent the ordi
nary puisuitsni business, although the patieut
is necessarially obliged to be under tbe inmie
mediute care and supervision of the Doctor
from one to four weeks, according as the na
tureand circumstances of Ilie case may demand.
Dr. M. docs not exaggerate, when he says that
the plan of treatment he pursues is obliged to
succeed in ninety-mne oases out ol a hundred,
it not in every case of Fisiuia.

DR. VV . VV M Altai!ALL;—Dear Hir-
The great relief i have recently received at
your hands, induces me to olfer my testimony
to > our successiul treatment ol Uancerous ailec
tions.
Home ten years ago, a small lump, some
thing like a wart, made its appearance in the
centre ol my lower lip, giving meat first no in
convenience or pain. After several years it
began to grow, i then applied to a physfoian
who cut it otfbeiow the surhice ot the lip and
buret it with caustic, and I thought, cured it.
Ina short time afterwards, it reappeared and
grew more rapidly tiitiii before; affecting with
in tiie lust six months, tiie glands of the neck
and giving me occasionally considerable pain!
My physicians gave it as their opinion that it
was cancerous and that nothing could relieve
me but the knife.
In this situation I put myself under your
treatment, on the 10th September last, and to
day, I think i may salely say, that 1 am well.
1 trust that you will long five to afford retie! to
tiie aiilictni and disiirssed. VV ith my warmest
thanks, for your kind and constant attention
during my stay with you,
I am respectfully, yours,
