of the desired object.
We urc much pleased w ith the stand ta-1
ken by the G Jury of liilb. It ir encourag
ing and valuable from several considerations,
first—it is a county in which o:.e of our
: largest .commercial cities is located. The’
friends of the temjierance reform have long
felt, that the greatest obstacles in their way,
! were to he found in our large commercial ;
, cities. The country imbides its habits and
fashions, to a great extent, from the eus
j toms and practices of the cities; and we be-1
lieve, and have often expressed ourselves,
i that it our cities could be reformed, there
1 would be liodilliculty in the country. Ma-
I con has been peculiarly favored for seven
! or eight years past, by Temperance Conven
tions, the annual sessions of the Grand Di
vision, &c., upon most of which occasions,
j demonstrations of an imposing character
have been made, and talent of no ordinary
character has been brought into requisition
in public addresses, &c. &e. We rejoice
to believe that these opportunities and privi-
I leges have not been in vain. During our

left the unpleasant conviction
our minds, that Augusta is far in the
Retrograde upon the Temperance Reform.
Fifteen years ago, a most striking and hap
py reformation had been accomplished by
the friends of temperance ; and many of her
eiti/e us of standing and inlluence, and many
j lar;/ ly interested in her commercial pros
per!. y, were leaders and the most active ad
vocates of the Reform. Within the last
ten or twelve years, the population of Au
gusta has undergone a great change—not
only lias it been increased by citizens from
did'erent sections of our own country—but
scores of foreigners have b come residents;
and the change of character of citizenship is
striking. And with this change, we are sor
ry to add, that a change not favorable to the
temperance cause, is very manifest. What
can be done for Augusta? There are yet
‘onte noble spirits there : and we trust they
will awake, and not only regain lost ground,
but route the enemy from their beauitlul
and otherwise pleasant city.

Mr. W . P. Morrell, a “sober and
respectable citizen of Arkansas,” was
robbed of four thousand dollars on the
night of the Bth ult, on board of the
steamer Fanny Smith. On retiring to
his berth Mr. Morrell had the precau

and tie his money in a belt around his
waist, next to his skin. On waking in
the morning, he perceived a stilling
odor in the room which nearly sutfoca- 1

He next looked for his money; it was :
gone—the belt emptied of its contents.
He believes the robbery to have hoc::

not been the case, and the 9.h of De

the Ist of January that on which he
rises the latest, in the year. The short,

the rising and setting, occurs, however,
as formerly, on December 21st, at the
