“SI V< V J THOU GHIV”
I FLOoct beside by window and looked out
Upon the sunset----’gainst tho veiling sky
The gorgeous clouds heaped up, to fancy .seemed
Like mountains piled in soletnn grardenr higl
Cliff upon cliff all silently they rose,
Their purple edges fringed with golden light.
While far beneath there lay n silver lake,
With it< ptill ’-aters gleaming pure and f'rig-lt
Between the hills, deep quiet valleys spread,
Where or.” might wander dreaming pleasant dreams;
Bathed in a rosy mist amid the rocks.
Th” haunted rivers and the gushing streams
Oft have I gazed on such a scene as this
In childhood’s hour -:’en then its beauty slot ;
Into my heart with th” same witching power
And waked wild fancies far beyond control.
How pleasant, 1 have thought, ‘twould be to float
Over those waters, free from every care,
And listen to the sounds of musk, sweet,
Soft stealing through the fragrant summer air!
But as I looked, the glori us vision passed.
And night came forth—the fearful, holy night
•With all her twinkling stars that o’er us shod
Such g-entic b-at;i* of sob. •- •••’ silver’ fight
And thus it is with me. I to* airy .-napes
That I so loved in childhood's merry day- j
Have vanished, and my quiet joy- are now
More like the star sight’s mild and constant rays.
And I am thankful that it is so -fair
The sunset’s glow -butjth! it fades awa>
More blessed’tis to love the chastened light
That soon shall mt !* into eternal day

which, alas! be now lends his high station and far

Allow each tippling shop— which is u low calcula

that would otherwise attend school, and we have
about In,ooo of these innocent and defenceless mor

consolation of education w hen they might be blessed
with them; while, at the same time, they are being
trained up in idlem • and crime. This is another
item, and the main cause of so much ignorance in
Georgia; and so we might go on through nil grade ,

and uncalled for; that there is a crisis in ttie country
and that this cause, this cause of humanity, this cause
of the body and soiilh of men, women and children,
should be postponed, and that these “ante-chambers
