Commerce contt ilmtes largely to human progress bv
enabling a great part of mankind to withdraw them
selves from tie production of material products and
to devote their time and talents to the prosecution
and a lvanceinent of the arts and sciences. Did each
man depend upon his individual exertions for the
production of all the objects of his wants he could
find hut litt'e, if any time, to devote to the acquire
ment of knowledge. This is exemplified when soci
ety is in its infancy ; the savage, whose wants are
few and of the simplest nature, being obliged to pro
duce the objects of his consumption by individual
exertions, finds it impossible to acquire those things
ol which lie is in most urgent need. Superior intel
ligence lias enabled man to multiply the objects of
bis wants a hundred fold, but with the power of. x
changc; tins increased ability would not only be of
no ;u vantage, but would after a short time cease to
exist, lo so great an extent has commerce increas
ed the rate of production that there are few who can
not find leisure time sufficient to acquire, at least, a
knowledge of the elementary branches of an educa
tion. Another, and by no means contemptible ad
vantage which commerce hasconferred upon the gen
eral interests of society, consists in this, that it has
served to call forth the inventive genius of man and
awaken a deep and lasting interest in every depart
ment of the arts and sciences. It has directed at
tention to scientific researches, not as a matter of
spec ulation only, but as furnishing facts in a high de
gree useful to nmn. But besides the advantages al
ready named, there are many others which com
merce has conferred upon society and thereby con
tributed to the advancement of civilization. It serves j
t produce unity of feeling, custom and manners
among a [people, to tighten the bonds of brotherhood
by making their interests the same, and to establish
social relations between different and distant sections
of a country. Between foreign nations it has the ef
fect of mutually rendering each more powerful, pros
perous and enlightened. Ft nlaces within the reach
of distant people the luxuries which their situation,
climate, and other circumstances may render it im
possible for them to produce. It advances the arts
and sciences by collecting and forming into one, the
achievements oi individual minds in different parts
of the world. No single evil retards the progress of
civilization so much as tear. Commerce is to he the I
glorious means of banishing it from the earth and
bringing about that happy era, when its harsh notes
shall cease, under tire “whole heavens,” and univer- 1
sal peace and “good will unto men” prevails; when !
all the nations of the earth shall be united in the sa

Sir*Governor Wright, of Indiana, says r>at our
grass crop is not properly appro iated. No crop, he
says, approaches so near a spontaneous yield, and
none yields so largo a profit. The hay crop <’ the
United States in ISSo he estimates at thirteen ink
lion tons; that for 1800 he estimates at fifteen mil
lion tons—which is worth $150,000,000; while the
whole cotton crop is valued at only $12(t,ooo,ooo.
Os this crop more than half is produced by the f.mr
States—New York, (which yields one-fourth of the
whole,) Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The grass crop,
which is used for pasturage, is at least as valuable;
so that single herb is worth annually overfOoo.On

New York State is worth more than its uln. , an i
