I—and furthermore, one of the truest friends

It is v< ry handsomely gotfcn-tip, both typo

With the exception, perhaps, of two or
r e articles, not hi retofore having been in
r nt, they are the reproduced letters of the
uthor, corrected, and so arranged ehrono
luieally, that, instead of a mere ‘‘Side show
fthe Southern side of the war,” —the title
is modesty has givcu them—they are rea I,
liougli incidentally, the main ‘-show’’ it-e t

“TMI Arp, so called, a side show of th.

The book is sold at §1.50 per copy,
hough finer bound editions can be bad for

The publisher says :
As we do only a cash business, all orders

Perfectly Delighted, —Many of our

the clause in the new Army Bill pro
hibiting any person who served the late Con

capacity, from entering the army of the Uni

“We can now listen to war rumors, and hostile
Congressional debates against threat Britain,
Mexico, and other offenders, without any fears
being dragged out again to dig trenches, or
of become targets for rifle practice. M'e shall
now advocate war fiercely and persistently,
whenever the slightest provocation for it

to lick Great Britain at once l'or her past

anybody suppose that Jefferson
Davis, were he how at, liberty, would go to
ttie Philadelphia Convention ?or permit
himself to he represented there ? Never, no
never. We are satisfied that republicanism
in this country lias proved an utter failure,
and that the South will never have any
rights while attached to the government,
but she is , unable to help herself—she is
simply a prisoner of war, having the power
to demand nothing; her true policy is to
wait with patience until she has li.e power
to demand her rights. We have confidence
in a super-ruling I‘rovi 'cnee, and we think
we have been wrong 1 too much for the
authors of that wrong to escape unpunished .
their day will come, either bv divisions
among themselves, or by trouble with some
other ration —a time when we mav hope
successfully to demand our rights—but it
will have to bo an occasion more oppor
tune, and a power more potent than the
Philadelphia Convention.

A Life-Saving Bathing Apparatus.
A French engineer named Desen is exhibit
ing in London a bathing apparatus which is
also a life preserver. It is of simple con
struction, resemples a child's cradle, the
upper part having a cylindrical cork-float,
canvassed over, nearly surrounding the ma
chine, which keeps the bather afloat with
the greatest ease and safety. The body con
sists of a net, with light iron tubular pipes
for supports ; and the bottom or bed piece
of twilled tick, at the foot of which there" is
a screw copper rudder, which turns upon a
.swivel with a pair of cork soles the shape
ot the foot. Against this the bather place?
his feet, and is thus enabled to guide or
steer himself in any direction, while by the
use of a handle attached to the left side of the
apparatus below the cylinder, he is enabled
to propel himself or recede, j his invention
can be used in the open sea, as well as on a
river or like.
