Price •?.) a year The Soldiers’ Cemetery —On Thurs day morning last, a portion of the Ladie-', and a smaller portion of the Gentlemen of the city of Griffin, met at the Soldiers’ Cem etery, lor the purpose of cleaning off and re decorating the soldiers’ graves. The turn out was not very large, hut most of those, who were present, laid hold in good earnest upon the work before them, until the greater por tion of the graves were put in good order ; we regret to say, however, that some were not cleaned off'. ['The ladies of the l'.xecu tive Committee were upon the ground- ac tively engaged in carrying forward the work, and assigning the care of a certain number of graves to such persons as were willing to accept the charge. This assignment is to be permanent, and the parties are be to held responsible for the care of the graves assign ed them. Some of the graves arc still in a neglected condition, but it is to be hoped, that the Executive Committee will soon find a sufficient number of reliable persons ready and willing to accept the sacred trust of re ceiving into their charge such as have cot teen taken. The Officers and Executive Com mittee of the ‘ Confederate Soldiers’ Mem orial Society of Griffin ” are urgently solicit ed to attend a meeting this (Thursday) after, noon, at 5 o'clock r. m , at the Methodist Church. Short.—Some newspapers fill the whole editorial page with one or two ponderous and thundering articles. This kind of writing is called the “ leader.” It takes up a heavy topic and chews it to. the bitter end—nay, punishes it to all eternity. It utterly ex hausts a subject, and the only reason it does not exhaust a reader is that it has no reader. Mho does ever read those two-column edit orials of high-shouldered rhetoric and stu penduous argumentation ? . N°, no > at style of newspaper editing is killing off the journals which indulge it. Short, sharp hits at a subject, done up in from one to 1 alf dozen or so little pithy par agraphs— hits that strike the nail and drive it home straight and quick—are the popular ideas of American journalism now. People who sip the newspapers between tups ot their morning coffee have not time to read twice round the world to tell what the editor is driving at.
