Daily Southern herald. September 4, 1866, Image 1

In early 1866, David Nichols Martin, a Georgia attorney and Confederate veteran, began publishing the Southern Herald as a weekly newspaper in Griffin, Georgia. On August 16, 1866, he partnered with Martin Eagan to expand the Herald from a weekly to daily format. Martin and Eagan published the first issue of the newly titled Daily Southern Herald on September 4, 1866, under the auspices of being the “official city and county journal” for both the city of Griffin and Spalding County, Georgia. By late 1866, Martin and Company assumed ownership of the publication. The Herald appears to have ceased printing not long after the ownership change.
