The Mkruhants. —It’s lively times
among the merchants now in Griffin.
New gdods are arriving in large quan
tities, and it takes lota of money to pay
freights. Mr. Jeff. Brooks returned
from market last Saturday. Mr. Jno.
Keith add Moot. Loewenstein are dai
ly expected. All have bought large
stocks. Mr. Geo. W. Head returned
yesterday, and will have a well assort
ed stock of merchantable goods in his
line. Trade is light thus far, but the
prospect is good for a large business
this winter. The Griffin merchants
will be well prepared for it, and crop
prospects are favorable. Though cot
ton is much lower than last year, the
crop will Be larger, and the farmers
less embarrassed with debt. The prob
abilities are that cotton will hold up
at about present prices for several
weeks, after which it may advance or
decline, according to circumstances.—
Just at-present, we believe it best for
planters to sell as fast as they can get
th eir cotton out.
DiasaßTbouß Fire. —Between three
and .four o’clock yesterday morning,
the fine residence of Gen. E. P. Dau
* iel, on Popular street, was discovered
to be iu flames, uud in two hours it
was a mass s ot ruins. Owing to the
distance of the house from any cistern,
the Fire Department could render lit
tle absistattce, except in saving furni
ture and adjbining buildings. The
housfe was occupied by Col. Charlie
Daniel, as a dwelling and boarding
house for young ladies. Most of the
furniture on first floor was saved; but
one room up stairs, occupied by Miss
Stark, .was Jocked up (Miss S. being
absent at her mother’s.) This room
had a good deal of fine furniture, cloth
ing and bed-clothing, and was most
all lost. The fire was supposed to have
originated from the cooking stove pipe,
where it passed through some plaster
ing into the chimney; though some
think it was the work of an incendiary.
Gen. Daniel’s loss is at least $4,000;
and Col. Daniel’s several hundred, dol
lars. No insurance. Miss Stark also
lost several hundred dollars; and some
of the other boardei’s lost considerable.
This is the first serious loss by fire
in Griffin in several yoars, and we deep
ly sympathise with the sufferers. The
adjoining residences of Dr. Daniel, Mrs.
Martin and Rev. Armenius Wright,
were in great peril, owing to the high
wind prevailing at the time; but owing
to the energy and promptness of the
firemen and citizens, they were saved.
The New Crop. —New cotton is com
ing in quite rapidly. On Saturday
last over fifty bales came in on wag
ons, and by next Saturday there will
doubtless be at least one hundred.—
Col. A. W. Walker, and his head man,
J. H. Dawson, Esq., headed the list
last Saturday, bringing in ten bales,
and we believe he has as much more
in the gin house. He has brought in
one load before. At present prices
even, there is a pretty margin of pro
fit; on a good crop, where the planter
didn’t have to buy corn and bacon.
Skiff & Gaylord. —Our people are
to enjoy a rich treat on Monday night
next, by the performance of Skiff &
Gaylard’s Minstrels. This large troupe
is far the largest and host which has
ever traveled through the South. The
writer has visited their entertainments
and can vouch for the truth of this
statement, as well as to the propriety
and decency of their songs and perfor
mances. Nothing vulgar or outland
ish is tolerated. There are several
brilliant stars in the troupe, and kod
an inferior artist in it. We expect to
see George’s Hall packed to its full ca
pacity.
Interest in the Journal for Sale.—
Finding the labor of conducting the
Macon Daily and Weekly Journal, ed
itorially and mechanically, too arduous,
I wish to dispose of an interest to an
active and Btirring man, who will as
sume either position. The Material,
Presses, eta, are all new and first-class;
the papers have met with unprecedent
ed success, and have a large and in
creasing circulation, and enjoy a good
advertising patronage. To a gentle
man who can fill the bill satisfactorily,
the investment will prove to be a pay
ing one. Address,
Harry J. Neville,

The Democratic Nominees. —Captain
•J. D. Simms, of the 3rd, and Andrew
J. Smith, Esq., of this, the town Dis

the Court House on the first day of
September. The party is satisfied,
and will give these gentlemen a cordi
al and victorious support at the polls
in November next. Messrs. Smith and
Sims were born and reared in this
county, and are true and tried Dem

them. In fine, the campaigghos open

the shivering season.
Yhe loss to tho laboring classes of tho United States
eoosed by fever and ague, has been estimated at up
wards of two million dollars per annum. Whole set
tlements are sometimes prostrated by the disease, and
is regarded in boiqo localities, aa oue of thoso visita
tions of providence which Cannot be avoided. This
Is a mistake. A# certainly as any of the evils which
are invited by negloct may be forestalled by procau
tion—so certainly may ail attack of intermittent (or
remittent) fever be prevented by invigorating the sys
tem with Hostetter’s Stonuwli Bitters, in advance of the
seasou, at which this malady prevails. Prevention, it
is needless :o gay. is tho wisest policy; but it is con
soling to know that were time has not boon thus taken
by the forolaek, aud tho paroxynis have actually com
menced, a complete cure may, in all cases, be rapidly
effected by tho use of this powerful tonic. Tho rep
utation of the Bitters as a specific for dyspepsia, llvoc
complaint, constipation and nervous debility, has in
some measure thrown into tho shado its merits as a
preventive and.cure of otUec all mints, but aU who.
have ever taken It, either as a protection against or a
remedy for malarious fevers, will admit that it sur
passes In efficiency all the so-olled specifics (including
quinine), usually poescrlbed for these maladies, while
it is at the same time ontirely harmless and decidedly
palatable.
