Fireuss s Pabtt. —The Firemeu are
to bare a bail and supper to-night—
the ball at George’s Hsll, anlthe sup
par at Walker’s newHalL This will be
a splendid affair. The proceeds are to
be devoted to the purchase of a Fire
Alarm bell. No invitations are issued,
but all respectable people are invited.
Tickets to the ball, one dollar; to the
supped, one dollar. Our Fire Depart
ment is now in excellent #der. We
haveaa exoellent Steamer which gives
universal satisfaction. «Our old V"d
engitmhas been put in good order, and
new leather hose purchased. Both
companies are composed of the flower
of the young men of the city. No
rowdyism is permitted in their ranks;
in fact, they are gentlemen. Let all
turn out, and give them a rousing ben
efit to-night A large number of tick
ets have been sold, and a jolly time is
» expected. Those who do not desire
t>d mw, will find ample means for
so iiai enjoyment at Walker’s Hall.
The itrk CoMtsa.—Templeton will
Iw here with his fine Troupe on Thurs
day next, without fail. Read his ad
vertisement He will present the finest
and most attractive performances ever
witnessed in Griffin. Those who wish
to get seats better come early, as Geor
ge’s Hall will be crowded.
The Latter-day Prophets. —And in
these days came Cunningham whose
surname is Bill, also Bob Hobbs the
batcher who tarries with William, and
all the people said what shall we do
for meat and bread. Then arose Cun
ningham and spoke thus. I have
bought the bulls of Baskan, also the
stall fed dry cows, and the fat heifers,
and many of the best swine from Ten
nessee, and those do I slaughter daily
for the peo{s of Griffin and surround
ing country, and verily my meat is
cheap, and the best that ever was seen,
and Bob Hobos cried out amen. And
all the people rejoiced and cried aloud,
we will buy our meat of Bill Cunning
ham and besides him we will have no
other batcher 1
Good Chance. —Mr. Prothro offers
all his furniture and other articles at
pablic sale. This is a splendid chance
for young house-keeper’s to secure an
outfit. Read advertisement
In Town. —Mr. Skiles, the Nashville
policeman, who captured Lewis Travis,
and received several .wounds in the ad
venture, was in town a fe& days since,
having come to Georgia to get his por
tion. of the reward. He is a fine reso
lute looking man, whom it evidently
Won’t do to fool with. His head was
tied up in bandages, bat his wounds
are doing well. v
School Oot.— The exercises of the
Male Institute closed on Friday last.
There was no pablic examination, but
a trial in arithmetic, which was very
interesting. The boys of this school
have accomplished wonders in mathe
matics, under the skillful tutorship of
Merss. Looney & Wilson. It was the
intention of the students of tho Insti
tute, and the young ladies of the High
School, to have a racing match in
mathematics on Thursday next, but
Professor Looney requests us to state
that owing to his necessary absence
this week, this exhibition of skill will
not come ofl. ,
Bio rabbit Hunt. —There will be a
big rabbit hunt on Thanksgiving Day,
(Thursday 24th inst j good coon dogs
wanted.
Read about Head & Philips. This
is the only wholesale Liquor house in
town, and is doing a staving business.
They trade fair and square, and have a
superior line of Liquors, Wines, Ales,
Porters, Cigars, &a.
Thj Bvily Institute. —We were in
error the other <1 ly when we stated
that Col. S.im B lily gave only one
thousand dollars toward building our
splendid male Institute, that was his
first subsjipbion, but afterwards in
formed that more money was needed,
he gave file hundred dollars more.—
The building cost about twenty thous
and dollars, is an ornament and hon
or to the city, and will doubtless have
two hundred male pupils next year.
*9»Rev. John Jones leaves Griffin
to-day for his new field of labor in At
lanta. The citizens of Griffin, and es
pecially the Presbyterian Church peo -
pie, regret to part with Mr. Jones.—
Asa pastor of this Church, as teacher
in the Male Institute, and as a citizen,
Mr. Jones has ranked high, and made
many friends. We hope that he will
be duly appreciated in Atlanta.
Mr*Mr. Van Patrick instructs us to
state that his business arrangements
are such that he cannot serve the city
any longer as an Alderman, and there
fore declines to run again for that of
fice.
Almost a Prat —Ool. Grant’s Hotel
took fire last Friday in the roof, prob
ably from sparks from the ohimneys.
Being disoovered almost as soon as it
eaught, the fire was put ont before the
engine got there, though the steamer
was promptly on hand. This was a
very narrow esoapr.

Serious Affray. -On Friday last a
serious difficulty transpired at the store
of Weems & Alexander, between Mr.
S.C. Weems and Mr. Atkinson, of
Pike. They fell ont about an aoconnt
which Atkinson had made at the store
of W. &A. Mr. Atkinson cut Mr.
Weems severely with a pocket knifa—
The wounds, though not dangerous,
are near vital points, and Mr. Weems
had a most narrow escape. Atkinson
was arrested and bound over to next
Superior Court -
Col. Uel Wright. —This old resident
of this section, brother to the late Judge
Wright, of Griffin, has been visiting
his old Griffin friends for several days
past Col. Wright was formerly the
Atlanta agent of the M. A W. R. R.—
He removed to California about six
teen years ago. and this is bis first vis
it to his old home. He looks hale,
hearty and jovial, showing that Cali
fornia mast be a healthy country. Tho’
in the “sere and yellow leaf” of age,
he looks about as yonng and vigorons
as any of the yonng bucks of Griffin,
and bids fair to live many years.
J&*Wash Warren, the famous coun
