Bishop Beckwith. —This distinguish
ed young devino officiated at St
George’s Church last Sabbath, with a
crowded house both morning and evc
ening. At the morning service the text
was from 4th chapter of St Mark, 26th,
27 th ,&nd 28th verses: “And ho said so is
the kingdom of God as if a man sheiuld
cast seed in the ground, and the seed
should spring np he knoweth not how;
for the earth bringeth forth fruit, etc.’’
Tho eloquent preacher, from this cel
ebrated parable of the sower, took oc
casion to demonstrate some of the
great mysteries of the scheme of salva
tion in a most profound and logical
manner; and took special occasion to
explain the theory cf baptism in a more
forcible manner than wo have ever be
fore heard it explained, in its bearings,
both on adult and infant baptism. He
claimed merits'for tho rite of baptism
as great as the strongest Baptist or
Christian could claim. He insisted
that baptism, if not a saving ordinance,
was at least essential to salvation. He
claimed that infant baptism changed
the spiritual nature of the child thro’
u miraculous and mysteries interposi
tion of the Holy Ghost, but ho frankly
admitted that the moral condition cf
the infant was not affected by this cer
emony; that the infant, although thus
spiritually changed, might still be lost
by reason of his moral nature failing
to conform to tho temporary spiritual
change. He treated this mysterious
ordinance of the Church with a degreo
of skill and cleverness we have never
heard equaled. At times ho was right
on tho track of tho so-called Camellite
Baptists; then ho plumbed the theory
and traditions of tho Weslyan Metho
dists. Then again he appeared to be
a strong Calvanist, and finally landed,
as we expected, squarely in the bosom
of tho Episcopal Church proper.
We have only time for this hasty re
view of the morning’s discourse. This
sermon was but one muro proof of the
fuct that Bishop Beckwith is tho peer,
if not superior to tho first clerical tal
ent of this Stato.
In the afternoon tho rite of Confirm
ation was administered to tho follow
ing people:
Miss Lizzie Wood, Miss Mary Bai
ley, Miss Lula Morgan, Miss Jennie
Morrow, Miss Nannie Calloway, Mrs.
M. K. Campbell, Mr. C. R. Johnson.
Rev. W. W. Wadsworth preached to
large congregations, morning and at
night, on last Sabbath at thcTMctlio
dist Church. Both sermons are
spoken of ns fine specimens of pul
pit oratory. Wo consider Mr. Wads
worth as one of tho most promising
young clergymen of tho day. His ex
treme youth would naturally convey'
tho impression that his debut as a
preacher was rather premature, but
wli6n heard, all doubts vanish as to his
ability not only to exercise the respon
sible duties of tho priesthood accepta
bly, but to become a powerful leader
in Israel. Tho Church needs just such
men. While tho youth of the country
are crowding the professions of law aud
medicine and commercial avocations,
how seldom wo see a promising young
man adopt the ministry. Too often
we observe that those young men who
do choose tho holy profession are of
such weak talent and limited education,
as to preoludo tho possibility of suc
cess in the secular avocations of life.—
Mr. Wadsworth would shine in the sec
ular professions. How much brighter
then tho lustre of his character in this
tho highest of all tho professions.
Shooting Affray.— Tho shooting af
fair at the camp of Lyon, McLendon
& Cos., occurred as follows on Sunday
last:
One of Col. Griffin’s hands, by the
name of Norris Trewel, (colored), had
stolen from Col. G.’s tent some cloth
ing and blankets, and carried them to
the camp at Lawson’s mill. Col. G.
arrived at the camp sometime after
wards, and apprised Mr. Kinny of
what had taken place. They immedi
ately proceeded to the tent of said
Trewel, accompanied by the overseers,
and found him playing cards, with the
missing articles in his possession.
They called him from the tent, and
were in the act of starting back to camp,
when they were fired into by some un
known party, from the distance of
about fifteen yards, using number G
shot fJeven white and two colored
men were wounded, Mr. Kinny receiv
ing 28 shot in the head, neck and
shoulders. Col. Griffin received seve
ral shot in the arm; Mr. Valiant was
shot in the throat and arm; Mr. Brown
in the head; Mr. Newhousoin the face,
neck and arm; Mr. Paul in the head,
and John Collins in the arm and shoul
der. One colored man was shot in the
breast and another in the foot. The
person who fired the shot immediately
fled. Capt. Lyon made eveiy effort to
discover the perpetrator of this atro
cious deed, but as yet he has been un
successful. Dr. Drewry examined the
wounds and pronounced none of them
very serious.
