Transacts Some Important Business
This Afternoon-
The city council met. at 4 .30 this
afternoon, preeided over by His Honor
Mayor Davis. Those present were
AldermtMi Patriot, Blakely, Davis, Ox
ford, Smith, Burr, Reid and Daily.
Minutes of 1 <st meeting read and
confirmed, except in to far as they
referred to a bill of Dr. J. F. Stewart
which had been ordered paid,
A petition was read from Mr, W H.
Powell asking compensation for run*
ning a street across the corner of his
lot on Sixth street. It was referred
to the street committee.
An invitation was read from the
Daughters of the Confederacy, asking
the council to attend the exercises on
Memorial day. The invitation was
accepted by a rising vote.
Another invitation was read from a
committee from Fitzgerald, inviting
the council to attend the Water and
Light Carnival in that city on the
U h inst. The invitation was accept
ed.
Au ordinance was read to prohibit
persons from escaping from city pris
on and prescribing penalties for same.
There being no similar ordinance, it
was adopted, and will bo published in
the Call tomorrow.
The police committee reported un
favorably upon placing a telephone in
the police headquarters Upon motion
of Aiderman Burr, the report of the
committee was adopted by the council.
Aiderman Patrick of the street com
mittee, reported that a force of hands
had been put to work upon the streets
and were rapidly putting them in
good condition.
The reports of Clerk and Treasurer
Thos. Nall, Chief of Police Ison and
Supt. Howard for the month of March
weq? read and referred to the finance
committee.
The following resolution was intro
duced by Aiderman Bailey, and unan
imously adopted :
The mayor of our city and the city
attorney having been blessed by addi
tions to their families —their first born
—one sweet little girl to each,
Resolved That this cou icil extend
the parents and daughters hearty
congratulations and best wishes.
Aiderman Blakely moved that a
note held by the Savings Bank against
the city amounting to over SSOO be
paid.
Aiderman Bailey wanted more light
on the matter and submitted a letter
from W H. Brewer, staling that the
money had been illegally borrowed.
After reading the letter Alderman Bai
ley moved Mr. Brewer the invited to
address the council
Aiderman Blakely stated that the
money was simply loaned by the bank
to the city to help it out until the
taxes could be collected.
Mr. Bailey said if the matter was
legitimate no one would be hurt by an
investigation.
The question was called for on Ai
derman Blakely’s motion, and it Wfsi
ctrried.
The note held by the Merchants
and Planters Bank was also ordered
paid. These accounts brought out
a heated discussion from the council,
after which the body adjourned.

TRADE AT HOME.
You Should Consider the Griffin Mar
ket and Encourage Same.
“Half rates to Atlanta and return.
I Gives patrons on opportunity to visit
the capital city of the empire stale of
the South Unexcelled opportunities
for shopping,” are words in large dis
play lines printed in red ink upon a
circular being distributed in our city
by the railroads.
To the railroads we have nothing to
say. It is their business and we wish
them success. But a word to our citi
zens if you please: It was not the
circular that attracted the Call’s at
tention, but the one line “Unexcelled
opportunities for shopping.”
We know too well what this means
to our merchants, a class of men who
do more to build up our city, in every
way possible, than all the railroads of
the land, for on the days mentioned
in the circular great crowds will go
up from this place to the capital city
to do their shopping.
And what does Atlanta dolor us?
Sell better goods at lower prices than
our merchants We deny the importa
tion and state positively that if the
ladies (for they are the principal shop
pers in Atlanta) would buy of our
merchants, they would handle the
same grade of goods that is on the
market elsewhere and sell them just as
cheap.
If you area true citizen of Griffin,
and care for its prosperity, then we
say it is your duty to buy here.
We appeal to one and al! in the
interest of our own good, to lay aside
the notoriety of foreign shopping and
if you go to Atlanta let it be on pleas
ure and not to r<b Griffin.

SANTA CRUZ TAKEN
Captured By General Lawtons Expe
dition After a Sharp Fight
. Manila, April 11—SantaCruz, the
most important place on Laguna de
i Bay, was captured yesterday morning
3 by an expedition under command of
- Geu Lawton. The Americans, in fif
t teen lighters, towed by st ven tugs,
t rnached ihe junction of the river Fa-tig
and the bay at midnight Saturday and
> Sunday merniug early started across
i the lake, with the army gunboats La
guna De Bay, Rapidan and Oesle in
the lead. A heavy rainstorm came up
. soon after the starting, causing a delay
I by scattering the flotilla.
At 11 ;30 o’clock the Rapidan, which
I had worked to the southward, opened ;
i fire on the rebels, who were holding a ,
position four miles from the town. 1 he ■
' fire demoralized the Filipinos, many''
I of whom fled toward the hills and the'
> town in confusion Sharp shooters
■ went ashore, under the protection of
the Rapidan’s gun, which shelled the
’ roads about the landing place
Two battalions of the Fourteenth
■ infantry, under Capt Hasbrouck, fol- '
i lowed and together they attacked the 1
insurgents, who retreated before the
fire of the Americans.
> A battalion of the First North Da 1
i kota, under Maj. Fraim, and a battal* 1
i ion of the First Idaho, under Captain
Finck, were then towed ashore by the
New York Sun’s launch. These troops '
deployed as skirmishers, on the left 1
flank of the troops, now marching to 1
ward Santa Crux from the south. The
4
only opposition met whs from small
bodies of insurgents in ambush along ‘
the roads. ’
Meanwhile, the Mangula De Bay
was attacking the rebels entrance of '
the river, north of the town.
Darkness was approaching and the 1
Americans who had iatided were still
two miles from town. A halt was *
made and the troops bivoucated.
In the grey of the dawn yesterday '
morning the advance was continued
The rebels made a desperate stand bu'
were driven out in coufusiou and ths!"
Americans occupied the town.
The total American loss was only I =
