Woman has no vote, in most of the states, but in all of them her influence in politics is acknowledged by the politicians, who keep their wits at work devising means whereby they may win and hold her good wishes. Kissing the babies is an old trick, but being still a good one, it is played whenever a good opportunity presents itself. Getting a rural housewife to darn a hole snagged in one’s trousers, which is alleged to have been a spec ialty of a former rtmatpr of the United States during bis campaign visits through the country, is another trick concerning which much has been i written and said. But, according to I Judge Hill, of Newport, Ky., Conmess man Berry, of the Sixth district of that state, has hit. upon a new and bright idea, the practice of which should warm the hearts of the women of his constituency towards his candidacy. Congressman Berry’s scheme was seen in practice on a Newport-Coving ton belt line car, the other day In the car with the colonel-—for of course the Kentucky congressman is a col onel, by virtue of both bis birth aod bis office —were a number of Newport women going to a convention in Cov ington. While boarding the car one of the women displayed signs of sud den but deep agitation. Something had given ’way. There was an imme diate amt earnestly whispered demand for pins. Two or three were produced b}’ the other women, but the whole stock seemed inadequate to the emerg ency. Col. Berry bad been buried behind a newspaper, very discreetly, during this time. But be got infor mation somehow —it must have been by telepathy—that there was still a woful want of proper pinning. At all events, with the utmost delicacy, be produced a very large safety pin and tendered it to beauty in destress, with the information that if one was not enough, there were more where that one camo from, and they were all at her service. Then the colonel went off behind his paper again. The big safety proved just the thing ; ami the rescued one was so grateful that she could alni'ist. Lavi' II ibsomz'd rue rescuer. Naturally every worn in in the car i'>tantly felt : n incr ased in (erest in CT B rry ; b was so thought ful in carrying safe!', pins, and so prompt and tactful in i flaring them. Now, Judge Hill of Newport, who is the c.olonid’s friend and abo something of a joker, declares solemnly that Berry makes it a practice tu carry several papers of safety pius in bis pockets, for just such emergencies, and that he has attached more votes to himself with safety pics than any other man in public life. mmH" BEATTIFUL ASSORi’M EX L OF TABLETS, LEAD PENCILS AND PENHOLDERS.
