THE EVENING GALL. Vol. X No. 215. PROF. CHAS. M. NEEL. A Graceful Tribute Paid, by One Who Knows Him Dear Mr Editor: We, the citizen.-- and students of thin ei'y, cannot and do not realize the greatness, the sin cerity of purpose, and noble aspiration that Prof Chas M. Neel has within his bountions heart for each and cvtirv citizen and pupil. Perhaps some of n>y readers may differ with me, but permit me, “my dear unknown reader,’’ to say that it is for the lack of association. If any one has ever bad the good fortune, pleasure (for it would be to any), and honor of bis companionship, he will have grasped t hat elevation of noble aspirations which no man can ever prove more worthy of than he. What should b> the highest aim of man’s life? Oh, my friends, would that each of us could only inclose a portion of that superla'ive degree of life! He says that man was not born into the world to do evil, and lower the talent which was given him But he urges his pupils to strive while in the spring of life, to prepare their bodies and minds for the summer suns, au tumn winds, and the cold, bitter, chill ing winters of old age. In one of bis recent talks before the school, he spoke of men and boys that seemed to drift along through life as if they never ex pected anything more or less. He drew the awful picture of a man who permitted himself to drift in the paths of lowness. “The man or boy, who has not the seriousness of pur pose, should strive to accomplish some greatness ’’ His example was one of his former pupils, who had never acquired the most important part of life ; just drift ed, drifted and drifted, with each day, as a chunk floats down stream —being of no benefit to himself or any one else. Where was he found when the sum mery sun of life appeared unto him? This man, who once had a bright fu ture in front of his career, but failing ■ to equip himself for the seasons of life, I and his future days were dark and dreary ones, until, at last, his body was found a corpse in an alley in one of the cities of this state. He said lie loved that boy, “for I love all my pupils.” and there has not come a time but that he would, and will, be ready to go to any place to aid one oFlhefh, should it be necessary. My friends, as he stood upon that ros trum and vibrated the rounds of that young man’s character, with tears in his eyes, there came to me a deep and pulsating feeling, that thrilled my whole body with emotion. Mr. Editor, though we may never reach the zenith of true greatness, but our mark in life should be placed among the elevated places of living. If we never reach that point, our aspi rations, efforts and time, will not be lost, for the higher the mountain, the harder to climb. So it is with the mountain of life ; if it should be high, and we are striving to reach its sum met, every day brings us higher and higher toward the end of our journey. But only hoping to climb a sufficient number of cogs in the wheel, so at last, when the angel of death appears at our cottage door, to escort the soul off into eternity, that it may be pre pared to go, and it may be said “well done thou good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of the Lord.” After scouring us around with the turtles, he turned to those beautiful and bright morning stars that illumi nated old C. M N. 1,, with an aspira tion to become worthy of their admira tion. Bo you girls pass each day with perfect contentment? Ido not wish Glorious News w Go “ e8 T r °m B B - Cargile, of Wsihita, I 1. He advised the young ladies to pre pare for the day when they expectet 1 to join hands with their future com 1 panion of life. “You that shall bi light, hope, comfort and joy, of tha home, should be prepared mentally ' morally and physically. From speaking of a young girl, wh< 1 bad a talent, but for the want of ar education and other equipments hat ’ to remain earning fifty cents per day * “Girls, do not be contented, but pul your talents where they can make and do the most good A girl that drift! through life, and a boy drifting (at f right angles to her) until at last, they I meet. Former Governor Stone, of Missouri, was in New York the other night and had himself interviewed on the politi cal outlook. In the course of the in terview he said : “William J. Bryan will be the next Democratic nominee for the presi dency. As to the platform, Ido not know what better we could do than I re-affirm that of Chicago. Nothing | can be gained by the change lithe i silver plank is left out, away go the Populists and the Silver Republicans, who flocked to Bryan, «nd in their stead would come the gold Democrats of the east, whose number is inconsid erable.” Governor Stone is figuring upon the strength of Populists and silver Repub licans to the Democratic party ; is this not exactly the mistake that was made three years ago? Did the Populists or silver Republicans come to the party in sufficient numbers to make up for those Democrats who left it? The sound money Democrats hold tbe bal ance of power in every pivoial state in the uni n and they will have to be reckoned with, if party success is ex pected again. They are not as incon siderable in number as Mr. Bryan’s friends may think. They should re member that two or three million men voted the Democratic ticket three years ago for the sake of party regu larity and not because, deep down in their hearts they bad any respect for the platform or regard for the men who were running upon it. What will it profit the party to win over some Populists and Republicans, if in doing so, it must lose enough regular Democrats to bring overwhelm ing defeat to the party again?—Val dosta Times Discovered by a Woman. Another great discovery has been made, and that too, by a lady in this country. “Disease fastened its clutch es upon her and for seven years she withstood its severest tests, but her vital organs were undermined and death seemed imminent For three months she coughed incessantly, and could not sleep. She finally discovered away to recovery, by purchasing of us a bottle of Dr. King's New Discov ery for Consumption and was so much relieved on taking the first dose, that she slept all night; and with two bot tles, has been absolutely cured Her name is Mrs Luther Lutz.” Thus writes W. General Stephen D. Lee's resolution! l ( introduced at the reunion in Charles ton, were, and very properly too, t amended. His resolutions accepted , tbe suggestions of tbe president that . the federal government take charge of . and care for tbe Confederate dead* . While the sentiments of the president , were fully appreciated by the Southern , people, a general protest went up all over the South against any other than , the women of the South caring for our dead. And this sentiment is clearly expressed in the amended resolutions, . as adopted at Charleston. Here they are : “The United Confederate Veterans , in annual reunion assembled, desire to . place on record their sincere apprecia , tion of the utterance of the president r of the United Seatea in Atlanta, in ( December last, concerning the aasump tion of the care of graves of our Con* ! federate dead by the national govern ment. We appreciate the very kind 1 sentiment expressed and we shall , welcome any legislation which shall result in the care of the graves of cur comrades in the northern states bj’ our government. “In regard to our dead, whose re* mains are resting in the states which 1 were represented in the Confederacy s and Maryland, the care of their final r resting places is a sacred trust, dear to 1 tbe hearts of southern women and we 3 believe we can safely let it remain I ‘ there ” ; CASTOR IA - For Infants and Children. a r The Kind You Have Always Bought ) Pitts’ Carminative is pleasant t the taste, acts promptly, and never ia r to give satisfaction.
