THE EVENING CALL. Vol. X No. 238 Social Salad PLEASANTLY REPORTED FOR THE EVENING GALL. June. She needs no teaching; no defects is hers; She stands in all her beauty ’mid trees. Neath the tall pines her golden sunshine stirs And shifts and trembles with each passing breeze. All the long day upon the broad, green boughs Lieth the lustre of her lovely life, While too much drugged with rapture to carouse, Broods her soft world of insect-being rife. So without eflfort or perplexing thought She comes to claim all homage as her own Clad in the richest garments Nature has wrought, Melting the strongest with her magic zone. Oh, wondrous June! Our lives should be like thee, With such calm grace fulfilling destiny. * ♦ This week, like all others of the last month er two, has been a busy one socially. There has been one function for almost every day, and despite the extreme warmth of the days, ail have proven delightful. The decorations were exqui- ! site, and were of fragrant sweet-pea : blossoms, palms, and hadsome, flour- i ishing plants. Mrs. McWilliams look- ’ ed unusually well, gowned in pink : organdie, elegantly fashioned and ' trimmed with lace. Mies Lena Harris gave a charming recitation, which! added much to the pleasure of the guests. Tempting ices and refreshing fruit punch were served during the afternoon. » * ♦ Miss Terry and Miss Martha Terry will have as their guests for this next week : Alias Sara Perry, of Brunswick ; Miss Head, of High Palls, Mies Slaughter, of Jackson » •» « Miss Rebecca Nall left this morning for Athene, where she will be the guest of Miss Mary Walker. * * * Mrs. T. The affair will be a pretty home wedding, with Miss Olive Farrier as maid of honor, and Mr. Leon S. Davis as best mar. Immediately after the ceremony, the couple wi ! leave for Griffin, their future home. » •» * A charming party of pleasure seek ers, consisting of the members of the Sextette Club and several of their lady friends, returned this morning from a A Narrow Escape- Thankful words written by Mrs. Ada E. H Haiioett fi.r- sp-emne house, w.th its wide verandas, where one cm.ld sit and drink in the delicious j air and the beautiful scenery, cozy j nooks and corners, altogether made I this an ideal spot for such an outing. There was a moil congenial party — there were dances, cakt-walks, mock marriages, and any amount of small talks and fun—in fact, there was ev ; erything to make the week just what it was—one of the most delightful im aginable. Those of the party were Miss Perry, of Brunswick; Miss Head, of High Falls; Miss Slaughter, of Jackson; Miss Terry, Miss Edwards, Miss Richards, Mr. and Mrs. Seneca Sawtell, Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Jones, Lyndon Patterson, Leon Davis, James Flyut, Mr. Dally, of Atlanta; Capt. James Kimbrough, Mr. Cunningham, of Atlanta. * # « Mrs. James Brawner entertained the Mystic Circle Tuesday afternoon at an elegant reception, which was another brilliant social function, added to the already full list of the week. The handsome home was exquisitely adorn ed with a wealth of cut flowers, palms and ferns One room was aglow with loveliest roses, and another was a beautiful conception in sweet-pea blossoms, while in the reception hall there was a grouping of potted plants- Mrs.Brawner is a popular andattractive I woman—as usual, she was elegantly gowned. A tempting menu was served to the guests seated about the rooms, and on the verandas. Airs Brawner’s guests were Mrs. Chas. Mills, Mrs. J. M. Kimbrough, Mrs. Redding, Mrs. Strick land, Mrs. M. E. Wilson, Mrs. Burr, Mrs. Nall, Mrs. W. J. Elegant refresh ments were served at 11 o’clock. ♦ * * The Dorcas Society held a business meeting Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Lloyd Cleveland, on Taylor street. ♦ * * The Hawthorne Club met as usual I with Mrs. Walter Ellis Tuesday after- | noon. * * * A notably brilliant event was the ; marriage of Miss Matlie Briggs Tut wiler and Mr. James M. Alartin,of i Huntsville, Ala,, on Wednesday even ; ing at the home of Mrs, Matlie West ,in Huntsville. The beauty and popu larity of the bride and the social prom* ■ inence of both families made this wedd-ng one of wide-spread interest. The heme scene was a lovely one. Within the spacious house acetylene lights made the scene a brilliant one, shining in a profusion of pink sweet peas, which were used in every avail able niche and corner. Beautiful garlands of bamboo, that graceful Southern vine, formed green arches over the bay. window where the bridal party stood during the ceremony. Here a mass of palms and ferns formed a lovely bower. As Miss Tutwiler, Mrs. Martin was deservedly papular, cultured and traveled. She is a most interesting and attractive young wo man, and will win many friends in her new home. The bridal gown of white liberty chiffon over white taffetas was beautifully fashioned and most becom ing. The tulle veil fell in graceful folds from the crown of her bead to the nem of the long skirl. She car ried bride roses Mr. Martin is popu lar and prominent He has unusual ability, which has placed him in the foremost rank of Huntsville’s business men The presents received were very handsome —in elegant phaeton and horse was the gift of the groom to his bride. A chest of silver from the groom’s father was his gift to his new daughter After the reception which followed the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Martin went to the lovely home which Mr Martin bad prepared for bis bride. The bridal trip was deferred on ac count of the illness of the bride’s mother. That Throbbing Headache Would quickly leave you, if you used Dr. King’s New Life Pills. Last night, in the arena . of the Coney Island Sporting Club, be [ knocked out Robt. Fitzsimmons, in a . clean cut manner Fitzsimmons was out—weighed and , out-matched. Jeffries showed himself one of the [• cleverest and fastest fighters, as well ; as the heaviest Fitzsimmons lauded , often, but his punches were of no ef fect. Jeffries showed wonderful speed i with his left hand, doing most damage with it,until the eleventh round, when he put his right flush on the point of the jaw and knocked Bob insensible to the floor. Fitzsimmons’ defeat came as a thunderbolt out of a clear sky, though from the moment the men entered the ring, it was appreciated that Bob had his hands full. THE MODERN BEAUTY Thrives on good food and sunshine, with plenty of exercise in the open air. Her form glows with health and her face blooms with its beauty. If her system needs the cleansing action of a laxative remedy, she uses the gentle and pleasant Syrup of Figs, made by the California Fig Syrup Co. only. ♦- ♦ Senator Hanna and the Chairmanship. Senator Hanna indignantly denies the rsport sent out from Washington that he intends to resign the chair manship of the Republican national committee. He says he will retain the position until the end of his term His term will end with the election of a new committee. He will therefore call the next Republican convention to order. It is of very little importance to the, Republican party whether he retains the chairmanship of the committee or not, as there is not very much of im portance to do before the meeting of the national convention. It is a lore gone conclusion that the President! will be renominated, unless something unforseen happens before the conven tion meets to destroy the confidence of his party in hie ability to carry the next presidential election. Th* ques tion as to whether Senator Hanna will accept the chairmanship for another term is of vastly more importance Io his party than whether he will servo out bis present term. It ie doubtful if the Republicans could get another chairman whocould do as much to assist tbeir party to re* tain control of the government as Sen ator Hanna can. He proved himself an exceptionally able campaign man ager in 1896, and it is certain that it would be difficult, without his assist ance, to raise the amount needed for campaign expenses. He has the con fidence of those who ate expected to contribute to the campaign fund. It is doubtful, however, if he will consent to manage the Republican campaign in 1900. He says that he cannot afford to do so. His health will not permit and hi« private interests demand bis attention. He is going to Europe in a few days for his health, being a great sufferer from rheuma* tisn*. It is expected, however, that a great pressure will be brought to bear on him to induce him to manage the campaign next year. It may be that one of the reasons why he would like to keep out of a conspicuous place in next year's cam paign is the dislike he has to being caricatured Some of the pictures which were made of him during the last campaign were of a character to make him wish he had never had any thing to do with politics L heshou d be the Republican campaign manager in 1900 the artists who make men fa mous or infamous with their pencils would do tbeir utmost to make life miserable for him.—Savannah News. Financial Legislation Predicted- Senato,r Allison is the authority for the statement that Congress, at its approaching session, will pass a finau- ; cial measure. He says it will be a very moderate measure—one that will i maintain the gold standard, and at the same time give the country a safe and flexible currency. In the course of bis talk the senator said : 'The rec* ommendations of the President rela tive to the issue of national batik cur rency to par value of bonds deposited with the United States treasurer, a decrease in the tax on national bank circulation and the payment of gold for grtenbacks when the latter are taken out of the tnasury are all worthy es enactment into law, and I I should not be surprised to see them adopted ” We have not believed al any time that Congress, at the session commencing next December, will pass a financial measure. It will be a difficult matter to suggest any financial legislation which will command the undivided support of the Republicans. They don’t want to give the Democrats any campaign material. It is impossible to frame a financial measure that wouldn’t provoke a vast amount of opposition. Therefore, while the R»s publicans will talk about a financial measure and bills looking to financial legislation will be introduced, it, is safe to say (hat no money bill will ba pass ed until after the presidential election. —Savannah News. &.n Excellent Combination. ’The pleasant method and bemflcial effects of the well known reun-.’y, Syrup of Figs, manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Co., illustrate the value of obtaining the liquid laxa tive principles of plants known to be medicinally laxative and presenting them in the form most refreshing to the taste and acceptable to the system.
