THE EVENING GALL. 01. X. No. 242 JURY COULD NOT AGREE Declared a Mistrial in the Case of the State vs G V Barnett After the jury had li.-en out about two hours last night without reaching a verdict in the case of G. V. Barnett, charged with mobbing Tom Grant on the 22 of May, .Judge Reagan declared a mistrial and dismissed the jury for tlie term. The jury aloud nine for acquittal and three for conviction, when a mis trial was declared. Before adjourning court in the af ternoon Judge Reagan dismissed all jurors for the term, and announced that the other cates would go over to the regular term of court in August The grand jury found true bills against G. V. Birnett, Tom Fallins, W. E Gray, Jett Moore and J T.Ran ! 4 dal), charging them with mobbing, and Judge Reagan reduced theirbonds to SIOO each, which was readily given. Court had been in session since Monday morning, and Barnett was the only one placed on trial. He was ac quilted of the charge of mobbing and assault with intent to murder Seab Jackson, colored, on the night of May 23rd. Yesterday he was placed on tri al for mobbing Tom Grant, colored, on May 22d_, which resulted as stated above, in a mistrial. A droll story of a mishap to a pick picket is going about town that I hope is true, but like all too good stories, one is inclined to doubt its veracious ness, says the Boston Herald. It seems that a suburbanite who had been in town doing her spring shop ping on very limited means finally took the electric car for home, with precisely $2 63 in her possession. After paying her fare, she tucked the purse in her pocket—wonderful woman, she had a pocket!—and thought no more about it. The car started crowded, but aftei a while the passengers thinned out and ; when the lady reached her destination she was nearly alone. On arriving at her home, she made the discovery that her purse was gone. The pocket had been picked, and she remembered that in one of the various jolts and shak ings up, a man leaned heavily on her side, had apologized, and shortly after pushed out off the car. Well, there was less than $3 gone, if the pocket book was new' and pretty. The next day the lady had occasion to feel in that pocket of here, when lo and behold! she picked out a diamond ring of great brilliancy! There was I ni one conclusion regarding its pres ence there. The ring had slipped from the finger of the thief who had [licked her purse. To be brief, this unexpect ed booty has been carried to a well known jeweler, who appraised its worth at SBOO. Now the question is, where did the [dckpocket get it, and what lurid expression did justice to the oc casion when he discovered the loss of such a gem to gain a paltry $2 58? All druggist** STORY ABOUT PATTI How She Convinced the Postal Clerk of Her Identity I Here is an amusing and character i istic story about Adelina Patti, who, ias all the world knows, recently be came the biide of Baron de Ceders trom. After her marriage she went from her Welsh home, Craig-y-Nos, to Cannes, and before leaving she gave instructions that all her mail was to be forwarded to the Cannes posloffice. When she arrived at Cannes, she went to the postoffice and asked the official if there were any letters for the Baro ness Adelina de Cederstrom-Patti. ‘Lots of them,’ was his reply. ‘ln fact, they’re coming in by every mail.’ ‘Then give them to me,' she said ea gerly, being naturally anxious to get news from home. ‘Have you any old letters by which I can identify you?’ asked the official, ‘No,’ answered Mme. Patti. ‘I have nothing but my visiting card. Here it is.’ ‘Oh, that’s not enough, niadame,’ was the cold reply. ‘Any one can get visiting cards of other people. If you want your mail, you will have to give me a batter proof of your identity than that.’ Mme. Patti, however, was not to be baffled easily. ‘i ou surely have seen Adelina Pats ti’s photograph,’she urged. ‘Will, look at me. Don’t you see lam the same person?’ Even this argument did not con vince the official, and a moment later he abruptly turned away, after throw ing the coveted pile of letters into a drawer. A brilliant idea then struck Mme. Patti. It was quite early—only 8 o’clock—and there was no one in the postoffice except ar old clerk, who was busy writing. A golden opportunity it was, and the great artist availed her self of it. She began to sing. A touch ing song she chose, the one beginning ‘A voice loving and tender,’ and never did she put more heart into the mel ody. And marvelous was the change as the brilliant music broke through the intense silence. In a few minutes the quiet postoffice was filled with people, and hardly had the singer concluded the first few lines of the ballad when the old clerk came forward and said, trembling with excitement: It’s Patti, Patti! There’s no one but Adelina Patti who could sing like that.’ ‘Well, are you satisfied now?’ asked the madame of the official who bad expressed doubts as to her identity and who now stood open mouthed in front of the crowd. The only reply which he made was to go to the drawer and hand her the pile of letters—New York Herald. Bismarck’s Iron Nerve ' Was the result of his splendid health. Possibilities of English- A number of commercial travelers were telling stories in an uptown res taurant last night, says the New York Tribune, and this was vouched for by one who used to be a railroad conduc tor in Eastern Pennsylvania: “My train had always reached Le banon just after an txpress train, but the schedule was changed so as to bring my train into trio station first. A voluble Pennsylvania Dutch woman was a regular passenger on market days, as my train stopped at her station, while the express whizzed by. The first evening that I ran my train in ahead of the express she was much ’ astonished and delighted She rushed up to me and exclaimed in tbo high key and peculiar dialect of that i egion : “ A >’, you’re early of late ; you’re first at last ; you used to be behind before.’ « CASTOR IA For Infants and Children. Tree Pests and the Freeze Aee irdine Io reports which have been maim) hi Pud. Scott the -fate in,. t : tl Mi F-biliary didn i kill all of the various kind- of insects which illlict fruit trees in this state. It was thought by many that the freeze was not an unmixed evil. Although it practically destroyed the peach crop it was asserted it would rid the peach trees of the San Jose scale the peach scale and the web worm It is stated by Prof. Scott that all 'liese peats appear lo be more abundant this year than ever before, particular y in South Georgia. If, therefore, the freeze killed some of them it left enough to bring forth an abundant supply of tree killing germs this season. * The thing for the fruit growers to do is to begin fighting the peata at once. If they don’t know what remedies to apply they should consult the stale entomologist. He has just issued a circular giving tho information which fruit growers need There ought to be no delay in examining orchards, nor in applying remedies where the pests are found. A vigorous war on them this summer may ba the means of sav. ing both trees and crop next year. Prof. Scott, from his bulletin, seems to be under the impression that the law relative to the inspection of fruit trees before they are taken from the nurseries is not being complied with. The purpose of the law is to prevent the spread of pests which destroy the orchards. There is a good reason why every fruit grower should assist in having the law enforced. Why should he take any chances? The trees he plants may have on them germs of diseases. The result will he, in such a case, that be will have all his trouble and expense for nothing. The indica tions are that Georgia will become a great fruit growing state But in ordsr to attain that position her fruit grow ers must plant their trees and care for their orchards in accordance with sci entific methods. If they undertake the fruit-growing business in a hap hazard soit of way they will not meet with success. They must make them selves acquainted with the teachings! of science and be guided by those teachings.—Savannah News. Volcanic Eruptions Are grand, but Skin Eruption.® rob life ofjoy. A Sample Critic- The Chicago Tribune is sometimes forced to go a long way from home in order to find matter for criticism. In a late number there appears this paragrph relating to the Griffin inci dent : This brutal threat, is a fair sample of the ‘white evil” in that eec'ioiiofi Georgia. The negro is not only denied i the right of trial, but the right to work, the short-sighted brutes not realizing j that idleness, particularly enforced idleness, is the surest step to crime.' The “negro evil” is not the only evil in Georgia. There is quite a® much of the “white evil.” It is difficult to determine which is the worse of the two. While we might enter into this di cussion well armed for victory, it i unnecessary in view of the fact that Illinois is the only state in the unlm in which negro’s have been .-hot to death because they -ought work. All over Georgii negroes may be found engaged in the honest avocatior S; of life. The only war the white peo ple have to make is against the idle and the vicious of the race It is reserved for Illinois, headed by a re publican governor, to approve of the murder of negroes who want work and to applaud these of them who are idle and criminal.
