THE EVENING CALL. . Vol. X. No. 243 A NEW ENTERPRISE A Shoe Factory May Be Built In Griffin Soon. L the money td men of Griffin will display the’r usual enterprising spirit, . ili> r m mtifmjturiug concern will icated hero before very l*ng. It is true that nearly If 350,000 of local capital ha* been invested in cot ton mills during the past year, still there is ample money for the estab lishment of another enterprise of a few thousand dollars capital. Mr. D. M. Wilson, of Waycross, is spending a few days here, and if he receives sufficient encouragement, he will establish a large shoe factory in Griffin. He is favorably impressed with the city, and is anxious to locate his plant here. He has ample machinery of the most improved kind, to make from 300 to 500 pairs of shoes daily. He makes over twenty-live styles'of shoes, rang ing in price from 75 cents to $2 25, giving employment to about 100 hands. The only hope of Griffin’s ever be coming a large city lies in the build ing of manufacturing enterprises, and we hope the moneyed men will make an effort to secure this factory, which Mr. Wilson will locate either here or in Atlanta. RACE WAR*THREATENED. Indications of Trouble Between Ne groe* and Spaniards in Cuba Santiago de Cuba, June 15—A se rious race war wks threatened between the Spaniards and negroes today. Both sides are armed, but the arrival of the police prevented bloodshed. The city was placarded last night with circulars calling on the Cubans to expel the Americans and Spaniards June 24th. A Strange Occurrence. An honored member of the Ken tucky colony in New York city was rading his county paper the other evening after the cares and burdens of the day, while his wife sat near him engaged upon her needlework and evidently thinking of mother, home and friends, says the New York Sun. ■•Well,” said the husband, Icoking up from bis reading, “that is really one of the most remarkable occur rences I ever beard of. Indeed, it seems incredible.’’ “What is it?” inquired the wife with out stopping her work. ‘ Listen to what this says,” and be read as follows : “ 'George Harp of Fayette county, while visiting his aor:-in-law in Madi son county, mistook carbolic acid for whisky and made a toddy of it, which he drank, and died from its (-fleets a lew minutes later.” “I don’t see anything sis astonishing in it,” commented bis wife “People are making mistakes like that almost every day ” “But, he mistook it fur whisky, my dear ” “Well he ha 1 to mistake it for soma tiling. He wouldn’t have taken it on its own account, would he?” ’ No,” lie halted, ' but yon don’t set m to understand, my dear,” and there wm a shade of annoyance in his tone. “I do,”she answered, slightly nettled at his insinuation. “I don't think I'm any stupider than some other mem* here of this family.” What she might have said further or what he might have said will never be known, (or her eyes fell upon the bead of the paper in his hand and she •topped. “Ob, Harry,” she exclaimed, “why didn’t you say you were reading from • Kentuck paper? And to think too. that he made a toddy out of it! I m tltnoat glad we live in New York, aren’t you?” Mr. 11. A. Pass, Bowman, Ga., writes: "One of my children was very delicate and we despaired of raising it. For months my wife and I could hardly get 1 night’s rest until we began the use of I itts' Carminative. We found great re lief from the first bottle.” Pitts’ Carmina l>ve acts promptly and cures permanent ly' It is pleasant to the taste, and children it without coaxing. "Apropos of the hardships of our boys in Cuba,” said an officer who saw a good deal of duty ou the island, to a representative of the New’ Orleans Timet-Democrat, I’ll tell you a bit of a story. Shortly after oui tegiment went ou duty near Santiago, at the beginning of Wood’s administration as governor, we began to be able to take a little better care of ourselves than we had done throughout the campaign. One of our captains—l won’t mention his name, for he’s sure about this affair—was a great crank ou the subject of microbes, and took extraordinary pains to avoid their society. He had picked up a raw Cuban cook, and gave him tiie most explicit orders to boil all the water used in the mess, no matter where he got it. ‘Boil everything we drink,’ he said, ‘o'r I’ll kick your backbone through the top of your hat.’ "The Cuban promised faithfully, and obeyed the order to the letter. A week or so afterwards the captain, while for aging about town, was presented with a quart bottle of champagne from one of the ships. He was overjoyed, aud, securing a small lump of ice, hustled back to camp and turned over his priza to his cook. ‘I want yon to get up something t xtia good today,’ said he, 'for I’m going to ask a few friends to dinner to help drink this wjne.’ At the appointed hour the party assem bled, and after serving a •■epast of stewed beef and sweet potatoes, the cook stalked in, carrying a steaming saucepan half full of a muddi-yellow liquid. ‘What in thunder is ihat?’ asked the captain ‘1 hat's the wine, ssnor,’ replied the Cuban gravely ‘I boil ’im good deal, an’ ’e mo-’ all go’ way ’ The guests roared with Lug! s ter, and the captain was so thunder struck be couldn’t any a word He subsequently recovered himself suffi- 1 ciently to grab a cleaning rod and run the Cuban nearly half a mile. .Vler that, all anybody had to do to get a t fight was to say ‘boiled champagne.’ When I left the wound still rankled.” State of Ohio, < ity of T< ■■■■>, i 3 Lucas County. f ss. s Frank J, Cheney makes oath that he is the senior partner of the firm of F.
