THE EVENING CALL. Vol. X. No. 254 STEWART SLATON. Two ot Griffin’s Most Popular Young People to Wed Tonight- Mr Walter S. Stewart aid M -I Maijorie S<at .. will be unit< d in n> ir4 Huge al 7 :39 o’clock thin evening at the' residence of the bride’s mother, Rev. E. W. Hammond offi cialing. This announcement will be a snr prise to the many friends of this pop nlar young couple, for while all knew of their mutual attachment, they kept well the secret of their approaching nuptials. Immediately after the ceremony, which wilt be witnessed only by the family and a few moat iutimute friends, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart will leave over the Southern Railway for Wilson, N. C., where they will spend several weeks. Mr. Stewart is the youngest son of the late Hon. John I) Stewart, and his friends all over the State will con gratulate him in winning for his life companion one of the loveliest of Griffin’s fair daughters. Embarrassing Situation. Why does a sober and sedate city gentleman start hatless to his place of basinisi, asks the Youth’s Companion. Why should one of the most dignified and serious minded of women go down town with her dress skirt on wrong side out? It is hard to say ; but one can readily imagine the dismay of the poor lady when a friend met her and called her attention to the spectacle she was making of herself. A Cambridge professor, whose fits of mental aberration were as frequent as they were amusing, was one day out in a heavy rain, with his umbrella held high over his head, when he met a friend who stopped him and exclaim* ed : ‘Dear me, Prof. M., why don’t you put up your umbrella? You’ll be drenched ’ ‘Put up my umbrella?’ said the pro* feasor. ‘lt is up ’ ‘Yes, it is, but it isn’t open,’ For half an hour, mure learf; the professor had been walking with. a closed umbrella held high above bis head. At another time the same scholar was riding down town in au electric car, and lost himself in a book he was reading. Suddenly be noticed symp toms of merriment among the other passengers What could they be laughing at? The mystery was explained when he discovered that, having been annoyed by something between the plate of his artificial teeth and the roof of his mouth, he bad removed his teeth and was holding them up to view between the thumb and finger of bis hand. Still more embarrassing was the case of a lady who hurried to church one Sunday without her bonnet, and when reminded of the omission by her busband, who had preceded her for several minutes, r< : e hastily and hur ried up the broad aisle with a large red paraeol raised close to her bead! Judge B , than whom there never was a more sedate and dignified man, once appeared at a dinner party with his handsome white wig on wrong side OU' ' Glorious News Comes from Dr. I). U. Cargile, of Wash ita, I. T. He writes: “Four bottles of Elec tric Bitters has cured Mrs. Brewer of scrofula, which had caused her great suf fering for years. Terrible sores would break out on her head and face, and the best doctors could give no help; but her cure is complete and her health is 4 excel lent.’’ This shows what thousands have proved—that Electric Bitters is the best blood purifier known. It’s the supreme remedy for jpsema, tetter, salt rheum, ul cers, boils and running sores. It slimu htes liver, kidneys and bowels, expels poisons, helps digestion, builds up the strength. Mie Japanese steamer Nippon Maru It is known that a Japanese girl died of the plaque two days before the vessel reached shore and was buried at sea, Ihe Japanese crew became wild when they learned the vessel would be quarantined for tonight Iwo men jumped overboard with life preservers and attempted to swim ashore last night, lhey were drowned and their bodies found on the beach tied together with a rope. An examination of the bodies show ed signs of the plague but it will not be definitely known that they had the plague until a medical examination is made. The chief source of danger from the plague is from the Chinese here, who refuse to observe sanitary rules. He Fooled the Surgeons. All doctors told Renick Hamilton, o West Jefferson, 0., ai.er suffering for 18 months from Rectal Fistula, he would die unless a costly operation was performed; but he cured himself with five boxes of Bucklen’s Arnica Salve, the surest Pile cure on Earth, and the best Salve in the World. 25 cents a box. Sold by J. N. Harris A Son and Carlisle A Ward, drug gist. Gen- Wilson’s Proposition. It is said that Gen. Wilson, the military governor of the province of MalanzaSj wants the government to advance to Cuban farmers about S4OO each, to enable them-to purchase seed, stock and implements with which to begin farming. The report is that the most of them are so poor that they are unable to make any use of the land which they own or rent. Gen. Wilson’s scheme is,a very be nevolent one and shows tR% goodness f his heart ; but we feel s tie in saying that it wouldn’t be popular in this country, however popular it may be in i Cuba. There are too many men in every state in the Union who would like to borrow S4OO from the govern ment on just about each security as the Cuban farmers have to offer to permit of the scheme meeting with sufficient approval to insure its suc cess. There is a growing impression that we have already spent about as much money in helping the Cubans us we can afford to. In Cuba and the Phil ippines we have, up to date, spent about $230,000,000, and the American people are being taxed to pay the in terest on this money. And they are not get rig any of it back. The pros pect of their getting any is not prom ising. No, we hardly think the government will regard with approval the proposi tion to lend Cuban farmers S4OO each. About all it can stand or the people will permit it to stand, in the way of distributing money among the Cubans is what is now being paid to alleged Cuban soldiers That distribution has caused this country trouble enough without singling out other classes of Cubans for beneficiaries of our bounty. —Savannah News. WASHINGTON LETTER Things That Cause Comment in tht Nation's Capitol •’ \V ashington,J one 29.—Unless som< f of the shrewdest politicians in Wash' y ington are much mistaken, the death knell of Algerism was sounded wher I Gov. Pingree announced his deal with 9 Alger to try to put the latter into Sou t ator McMillan’s seat. Secretary Ah 1 ger, who has just returned to Wash- I ington, is said to be as mad as a hornet because Pingree gave out the deal i before be was ready to have it made i public. He wished to remain in the I Cabinet and to make as much use as i possible of the many plums at the dis posal of the War Department, before the deal got out. Now, friends of Sen i ators McMillan and Burrows say that i if Alger doesn’t resign voluntarily i they have the means to compel Mr.’ McKinley to ask for his resignation. i Some think that Mr. McKinley will i do that without any compulsion, not only because of bis friendliness to wards Senator McMillan, but because of his dislike (or P.ngree on account of his free criticisms on several occa sions of McKinleyism. At any rate, everybody is again hoping that the end of Algerism in the War Depart ment is near. Judge Nash and Boes Hanna's man, Dick, were hobnobbing in Washing ton, when news of Gov Bushnell’s open attack upon Hanr.a, Nash and Dick, and his incidental attack upon Mr. McKinley, reached them. They had intended to remain in Washington until Mr. McKinley returned, but all plans were at once abandoned, and they rushed back to Ohio, to ascer tain the extent of Bushnell’s following in his open revolt against the Hanna machine. Private advices indicate that the revolt will be strong enough to give the state to the democrats, un less they put up a weak ticket, which is not likely. If there isn’t a job concealed in the erection by a private party ofa build ing for the use of the Census Bureau, the signs are all deceptive From the day of his appointment, Director Mer riam insisted that only a building large enough to put practically all of the employes of the bureau on one floor would answer. That shut out every existing building in Washing ton. Then there was talk of the bureau erecting a temporary building upon government property, but the account ing officers of the treasury ended that by deciding that no part of the appro priation for the buieau could be used for such a purpose. Then the shadow of the job became visible. Offies were asked from owners of lots large enough to erect the sort of building required. The only one that suited Director Merriam was submit ted by a man who became rich as well as familiar with the jobs while bolding office under the old Government of the District of Columbia. It was accepted, and a lease made for five years, which is likely to be extended to seven or eight before the census work is com pleted, al annual rental of $25,000. The ground upon which this build ing is to be erected has been used as a coal yard for years, the rental hardly being enough to pay the taxes, and it is claimed that SICO,OCO h to be spent in erecting the building. EVv-u if that amount were to be expended, the lease would still be a very profitable one, when it is considered that money is I going begging, when the security is as , good as this, at 4 per cent ; but an ex • pert who has seen the rough plan of ’ the building, says it will not cost ! i much, if any more than $50,000. Not a little surprise was expressed in Washington, when it was learned J that Gen Wood had for the lime, if not absolutely aud finally, declined f= Discovered By a Woman i !
